2011 Forum Knife Picture/Review Thread

WOW, They even printed a special tube for the Blade Forums Knife?
Are they still available? Linkage please if they are so I can check it out. :)

Hello Bruce,

Yes, it is an exclusive deal. We will be having a lottery for any extra bladeforum knives that the factory made. Watch this thread, or any other that includes the balance of the knives. We probably have more buyers than extra knives, so fair way is a lottery. If you want one, get in the lottery and good luck. Next year, 2012, get in on the fun! We generally pay for the knife in May, and get it towards the holidays. Ivankerly designed the label. He does an awesome job!

I just wanted to say thank you to all those involved. I didn't get a chance to use them yet but I definitely will soon!! Here are some quick pics along with my coco #85. I'll try to get some better pics later this week and hopefully my second coco and primitive bone w/punch will have arrived.

All I have to say it RE-DIC-U-LOUS! I absolutely love this knife. I am so happy I was able to get in on this exclusive deal, and I am very thankful to everyone who had a hand in this project. Thanks Again from Canada.

I came home from work today to find my knives waiting for me. They are both perfect in fit and finish. Fit of back springs, liners and covers is seamless, both blades on both knives are dead centred, pull is just about how I like it and the blades on both knives do not hit the back spring on closing. Backsprings are up slightly at the half stops and perfectly flush at open and close. I love the colour and jigging on the covers. The shape, swedging and long pull combine to make a great master blade. I have not tried the cap lifter but am sure I can get it to work. Thanks very much to everyone who worked on putting this together and to Andy excellent packaging and expedient shipping. Now just have to decide which one to keep mint and which to carry, after touching up the edge a bit.

Just got mine and I like it more than I thought I would. Awesome!! The cap lifter worked but not as easy as a SAK. Shaving sharp out of the box.
Just excellent!!!

I have a SAK manager in cellidor on my keychain with the same bottle opener. Sad to say but it works much better than
the GEC.

Got mine yesterday and am pretty jazzed as all aspects of this knife is truly top tier! I, for some reason pictured this knife to be larger than it really is (guess my previous experiences with GECs tended to be on the larger end). So I was pleasantly surprised by its very pocketable size/weight, It fits my sweet spot for slippies.
Much mahalo to all involved in this very worthy annual Forum knife.

When the time comes for thinking about ideas for next years knife, I would like to throw out the idea of an old fashioned cattle knife.

I third this notion! Maybe we can get GEC to design yet another NEW pattern!? Something smaller than their big cigar - say 3 5/8" long???

There are other companies besides GEC. Maybe we ought to give Buck a try or perhaps someone else. Maybe even Queen/Schatt & Morgan.

It would be sweet to get GEC to design a non-cigar style Stockman pattern variation for the 2012 Forum knife...
Sowbelly anybody??? :thumbup::eek::thumbup:

My 2011 Forum knife has been in my pocket non-stop since receipt and I absolutely love to carry it. It has been working for it's keep, though: the recycling bin is loaded with brewski and Jarritos empties. Love this knife! :D

Buck might be worth checking into, but if its anything like Case i doubt it'll happen if i remember correctly Case's minimum quantity was rather high and not sure they'd let us use the stamp, choice of patterns etc.
I love the Queen 2010 moose although it took a heck of a long time to break in to the point i can carry and use it (stout springs, almost a nail breaker) the GEC IMHO was finished much nicer, and while the caplifter isnt perfect it works so i'm happy with it, Canal street might be an option but if memory serves correct they are a bit more spendy than GEC, Queen...
time will tell

gene

i'm still in the minority i suppose but a toenail pattern would be cool:D

I only got my 2010 knife last friday and I can say while its a nice knife and I have used it exclusively since I got it in hand it took a bit of modding with my diamond files to get it right for me (tip of clip hit the spring, middle of spear hit the pin bulge on spring) and Queens edge grind took a bit to get right even with a course diamond file...I think GEC have done a great job with us and would hope that next year we utilize them again.

I would love to see a swell center sunfish, but anything sunfish would be awesome.

PS. As much as I love buck I am not a fan of their grinds on the slipjoints they make, and canal street seem a little limited in what they can and cant do.

All in all, I think GEC really went to bat for us. They did not hit a home run per se, but they really smacked the ball hard in my book with a triple. They accomodated us with a new pattern, they had to tool up for us, which says alot. I have to honor their hard work for us folksy folks, but it will ultimately be up to next years committee and our vote.

CJ I don't know about that. I think they drove in three runs with that triple. My knife opens bottles. The blade does not hit the pivot pin. Slabs and shield is outstanding. F&F is great. For a production knife not bad at all. Maybe we can have GEC single blade lockback. Pocket size.

Every year the committee talks to several companies about building the knives. We discuss pattern, price, options, timing, quantity, etc. We did this for the 2011 knife. There is a lot more that goes into this than just saying you like a company's knives so lets go with that company. Case, for instance, had a minimum quantity. If we would have had a few 100 more orders, they may have been an option. We've used other companies in the past (Queen and Canal to name a couple). This was GEC's first run at a BF knife and I think they did an outstanding job. Knife companies get requests for "club" knives all the time. We have to guestimate the quantity and set a max price in advance. Then the knife company has to tell us that they are willing to make it within our requested time frame.
