2011 Forum Knife Picture/Review Thread

Mine arrived today safe and sound!
Thank you all so much for all your efforts with this project. The knives are brilliant and I will have pics up tomorrow.
Andy a special thanks to you for the timeous shipping mate........:)

Found out today the flathead works just right for the screw that holds the lock plate on my left hand T/C Renegade I recently picked up. The knife and rifle look good together too.

I'm so bummed I missed out on these..

Stick around for the lottery. There are a couple of knives left, watch the traditional thread for a chance to purchase the extra few that GEC produced for us. No guarantees, but a chance to buy one. You could also post in the exchange for wanted to buy area.

Just a head's up. There's one up for sale in the exchange right now. Maybe have a better chance than lucking out in the lottery.

The cap lifter is WAY more useful to me since I rarely have to repair my horse's bridle. Great pattern.

Hi folks -

I had my copy at the range with me yesterday and it came in handy - I removed the scope from my .22 rifle, and also tightened the receiver to the stock. The screwdriver works very well!

Hi Stu -

You can do what you feel you need to do, but I can tell you, I have opened several bottles with a couple different samples of this knife and they have been consistent for me.

I can open any cap in two or three lifts of the cap.

I personally would never think of hammering on the knife to alter that cap lifter, but again if you feel like all is lost with the stock configuration, "you gotta do what you gotta do".

I think peening the blade would be a mistake Stu. I relieved the beak and area behind/below it on my knife about half as much as yablonowitz did and my knife works pretty good now -- at least 90%. I can live with mine comfortably now and when I used my round file to relieve the area, it was a slow as you go procedure. If I showed you my knife now, you couldn't tell it was altered from the original configuration -- no scratches, rough edges, etc.. Make sure you use a small, tapered, round file (about the size of a standard sized, wooden, lead pencil) easily obtained at most hardware stores, Home Depot, etc.. I used a standard steel file for use on metal but a Diamond coated file would work too. Just make sure you check and recheck if you use a Diamond file. They cut fast.

I'll close by saying that if you peen the blade, you'll be one sick puppy after you do.

EDIT: Picture added.

This is the caplifter blade on my knife AFTER I modified/filed it. You can see it is not nearly as drastic as yablonowitz's modification (nothing wrong with yablonowitz's modification -- he did a good job).

Look at the distance to the model # on his knife as a result of his relief filing and the distance to the model # on my knife as a result of my relief filing.

A good point by yablonowitz is that if you peen the blade you may well crack or even break the blade.

Good luck peening it far enough to be helpful. From grinding on mine, I'd guess the hardness to be close to that of the main blade, and I'd be afraid the steel would crack or break before deforming far enough to be useful.

I think your approach is worth looking into, Stu!
I'm going out for more beer.

I have used my forum knife for similar tasks. Model 60s are better with open sights anyhow!

You're right, as long as yours work I should just be quiet. Forget I mentioned it.

Hi Stu -

No need to get hurt about it. Do you think your cap lifter tool is different than the others?

I had a friend here last night and I had opened the first couple of bottles, I am able to open a cap with two pulls now.

I handed the knife to my friend and he tried to open his bottle and he gnarled the cap up and it took him several tries to remove the cap.

I noticed that he was trying to "overpower" the cap, which made it harder to open the bottle.

YES!! YES!! YES!!

It arrived in Scandiland on the 18th but due to the sloth of Central Customs in sending it on and the high hibernating factor of the local Customs' Office (don't ask, it's unbelievable...) plus an out of town trip for 2 days I wasn't able to get my Forum Knife XI until today!

Restlessly fiddling with it at work today, can't really open bottles of beer or cider there, but you get tempted quite often...:D Got it home to give it a wash and brush up like all my new knives followed by a touch of WD-40 and a light oiling. I noticed that this was the only GEC knife I've received, not to have been opened before i got it. The wax oilpaper was pristine, mostly it's a bit of a scrumpled mess after a dealer has checked it over, strong oil smell which was appreciated. The artwork on the tube is spot-on, all the choices of label looked good however and this is a very nice touch indeed.

REACTIONS
Very pleased indeed, not in the least bit disappointed. A Forum Knife is always something to be glad of and to reflect on friends and fellow forumites, this year's knife is in my view, remarkable. I have two other Forum Knives the 08 small stockman from Northwoods in Stag and the 10 Moose/Bullhead in Ebony from Queen. I like these knives a lot and would not trade or sell them. The GEC is the best made of these knives by some margin. No gaps at all even under bright light, no blade plat whatsoever, blades centre, excellent radiusing of the scales(no sharp edges to the bolsters) bone jigging goes up to the top bolster, shield flush, pins smooth against the bone, springs flush open and closed. This cannot have been an easy knife to make either, the EZ-Open and bullet end bolster require precision machining, my one is quality writ large. The Spear blade is superb, that's a Longpull I like a lot and mine does not hit the backspring at all. What of the bottle-opener? Not bad at all-perhaps I have too much natural experience....:eek:tonight I opened a bottle of Czech Skalak beer in two pulls and followed later by a bottle of the English Marston's Extra Strong Pale Ale in two pulls and neither cap was chewed or destroyed. I suggest using speed and an angle, seems just right. No bottle opener based on a knife is going to be as efficient as a Pulltaps style opener which levers it off over the top AND has a long flat jaw that grabs 3 crimps of the cap at once. But, if I had no other opener this GEC will and does work OK for me (I wouldn't try opening those screw open stoppers with this but they're rare in Europe)

CONS FROM MY P.O.V.
These are indeed minor, not that savage sharp but this can be soon rectified and GEC's carbon is some impressive stuff.
The jigging is excellent but I find the colour muddy and dull on my knife, I would've liked toffee/caramel colour or Bradford Green but that's just personal aesthetics.

OTHER POINTS TO CONSIDER
This was I believe, the biggest Forum Knife order yet, it must have been a lot of work for the committee co-ordinating this and negotiations etc. GEC delivered us the knife with no messing about or delay, in fact we got it well before the Christmas postal rush. They also delivered us a unique and elite knife, a special point for me. The Trojan efforts of Andy in getting all the packages out of his place in an amazingly fast order meant we all got to enjoy the knife at around the same time, no dragging on here! Sincere thanks.

FINALLY
My thanks to all involved for making it possible, and to ourselves for choosing this. Special greetings to the workers at GEC who made the knives, they demonstrate a continuity of skills in authentic American cutlery that is enjoyed around the world. CAN WE PLEASE GET THAT MAP THAT SHOWS THE APPROX DISTRIBUTION OF KNIVES GLOBALLY? All Continents covered I think, that's something! I raise my glass.:D
