2012 Bladeforums Knife - Chatting Thread

This year will be different from previous years. The process will be further firmed up, but as I understand it, once the knife has been completely negotiated and Spark has worked out a deal with the manufacturer, anyone wishing to puchase a knife will pay a non-refundable deposit through Spark's on-line shop - Onestopknifeshop.com, and once the knife order is tallied up, built, and shipped to Spark, we will then each pay the remainder and then he'll ship them out to everybody.

Look for the final poll for this year's knife (Micarta vs. Bone) sometime today.

Surely, the final cost of the knife plus shipping can be determined BEFORE any orders are taken. I for one will not pay a non-refundable deposit with the final cost of the knife and shipping cost not known before orders are taken. Shipping should be via U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation as in years past. The Post Office can give the "If it fits it ships" cost up front.

I voted for bone for the covers but micarta won -- not by a wide margin but it won. Why a run-off vote? Will that poll be open through next weekend in order to ensure that the weekend guys get to cast their vote?

IIRC, last year's cost was set by determining the number of knives ordered (firm commitments) against an estimated cost for production (the estimate given was "around $100 +/-"). The actual final cost was only known/set after the total quantity to be ordered was known/set (firm). The more that were ordered, the cheaper the final cost. I suspect something similar this year but that will be up to those running the show.

I do understand your concerns, but I think (hope) we will be given an approximate cost estimate well before an actual, firm price is set, and that estimate was pretty close last year... but this is just my guess IF things go as they did last year.

I think it should be Sunday Ash. If you look, votes were cast as late as Sunday and the Micarta got an additional 4 or 5 votes.

I just went back and pulled up my PAYPAL payment receipt to Chris last year and it was $99.50. No mention that the cost could be more in any of the threads that I saved copies of.

That was it -- $99.50 and that included postage.

Just for a time line reference, I sent my 2011 Forum Knife payment via PAYPAL on 26 April 2011.

If it goes like last year, it looks like we should have another 30-days before payments are required. Way more than enough time to get the FINAL cost of the 2012 Blade Forum Knife and postage cost.

Thanks Ed... I thought I remembered something about "hoping to keep it around $100" in one of the very early discussions. Might have been something to do with needing a certain number of confirmed buyers for that price though ('if we can get 150 people to buy, price should be around $100')... Seems like there was some sort of requirement from GEC that we purchase at least a certain number to promise a certain price... my memory fails on the details.

Yes, I seem to remember that if we bought at least so many knives that the cost would be lower. I think there were around 134 knives ordered but once we ordered them there was no thread or mention of a change in price.

I see nothing special here that would send the cost of the 2012 Forum Knife soaring over the $100.00 to $110.00 mark.

If we end up with with micarta I'll buy three :) Really though as long as the price ends up at <$150 it feels like this will be a great project this year. I bought two last year and was happy I did. The second one is my wife's!

OK as an example of that "warm" thing that bone has goin' on ;)

From top.
Some plastic
Some 100 year old bone
Some 45 to 50 year old bone.
Some more plastic. :D

Frankly, I don't care if the cover material is bone or micarta -- BUT as I've said before, let's make dang sure that the tang of at least one o the blades on the knife is big enouh to accommodate our Blade Forums Tang Stamp. "mqqn" was the first to bring it up and Bastid gave me a thumbs up when I said it the other day but I've heard -- errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr read nothing from any of the committee members or other members about this.

Part of the reason I voted for micarta is you can already find patterns that are similar in bone. For a BF knife it should really stand out as something that you can not just find anywhere else.

The tang stamp question is certainly being considered, and shouldn't be an issue.

The folks running the show have input from former committee members, and are more then capable of getting the job done.

I'm sure they'll tell you more, when there is more to tell.

The exact cost will not be known until all the orders are in. As stated, the bigger the order, the lower the per knife cost. We did ask for a "not to exceed" cost to be published before the deposits were taken. Spark did not say, "no", so I am assuming that something of that sort will be the arrangement.

Guys, you are going to have to cut us a bit of slack as we have never done the Forum knife this way before. So we don't exactly have all the steps worked out and the process is a bit rough around the edges this year. Ash and Manfred are making do with the time that was left after we worked out this method of purchase. And doing a pretty darn good job of it, too.

If it gets up to the time of ordering and you just can't deal with it all, then don't. Just turn away from it and no harm, no foul.

Hey everyone!!!!!

We've set up a sticky describing the knife so far. I will update as we move forward.
