2012 Bladeforums Knife - Chatting Thread

Not trying to cause a fuss but no, that just isn't the knife we voted on. I do thank the committee for all it's work, I know you put in a lot of effort and I truly appreciate it
(this is the only reason I posted at all, thanks guys really, I know it's a headache). But not this year.

Jon

Just going by the voted numbers it looks like 150 so far. As is the case with the years knives, there are always folks sorry they missed it. I believe these are going to be sold through Spark this time rather than pre-committed buying so I don't think it'll be an issue getting them all sold if 200 are ordered. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I agree Trand! Shouldn't be a problem at all.

From the "Tally Poll" thread;

I am in for one -

My experience from last year's project tells me that it is very easy to find good homes for the forum knives - I had plenty of people asking for knives that had missed the boat on the original order.

I could order a couple more if it would help make sure the project is a success - but I only need one for myself.

Good point... I've considered buying like 5 of these knives because there ALWAYS seem to be folks who missed out who want one... and they could easily be sold in the exchange at cost or even for a profit if one were so inclined (I'm not). There will only be a couple hundred of these knives and many members here WILL want one and will have missed the opportunity. Seems like that is always how it goes...

I'm sorry if I missed this before, but are we going to have to pre-pay this year since they are going through a dealer? Or maybe make a deposit?

I never minded paying up front before since it was a non-profit group effort backed by one of our own, but this is a little different.

I agree with Trand and Jason. I think some that haven't voted yet will still order and those that haven't ordered a knife will realize their mistake when we all get ours.

To those who haven't ordered, please keep in mind that this is a community project. Also, this isn't just another club knife. We aren't just stamping knives with a Bladeforums stamp. The pattern is unlike other production trappers and is presently only available as a custom.

were at 165, starting to get close!

It would be very cool if we did get to the 200 mark in the tally poll, although either way I think we'll have enough to make the order! I just recently was able to purchase a 2011 forum knife on the exchange and I can see how many other folks that might miss out on the initial order of 2012 forum knives would be interested in them at a later date.

Stu,

This is how I feel. I may pick one up if the chance comes along. I may be very sorry and miss out as Jake stated. Either way, I may not order one. So I am not voting for any. It should not really matter though. I was also under the impression that this year would be at the risk of the owner of BF's. If we all give our orders and pre pay then that really goes against that idea.

Not trying to throw a wrench in any thinking, as I am sure you were not either, but it seems the burden is being pushed onto them members.

Kevin

I had the same understanding as you Kevin. I thought the whole reason we're trying to see if there is enough demand is because Spark is going to be fronting the money and essentially selling them through his shop.

Hi Stu -

I think that is the plan - but keep in mind, even if Spark gets all the money up front, there is really very little to be gained since interest rates are so low - Paypal and visa will eat much more than any potential interest that could be gained.

The only difference between previous years and this year is that our sponsor here at BF (Kevin) will be the one on the hook if there is a problem - whereas in the past it was some brave soul like Gus or CJ65 -

Based on the price being quoted and the expense I can relate to from last year - there is no profit in this deal. With just under 190 knives last year, with the shipping materials and labor donated by the project team, with over an $18,000 initial investment (that was how much came in for the knives from the membership), the end result was just over $140 left over after all the dust settled. A business would not stay in business very long with that kind of ROI - it just would not be worth the headache. In addition, with shipping costs moving underfoot it would not take too much of a swing to eat up any overage that was planned into the budget.

I think it is very cool of GEC that they will tool up for a new knife for our project - they are not charging what it really costs them, but if you look back at last year, the EO Jack spawned many variations that were and still are successful sellers for GEC. I think this years knife will be no different in that regard. The folks at GEC are very shrewd in their thinking that our little community has great taste and are perfect to help determine a new model. ;^)

One of the hardest things for me last year on the project was coming up with the price to charge so that we could include shipping - I remember I was very apprehensive of setting a number since the price of shipping was changing underfoot.

It all worked out and I am hopeful that this year will be no different - I am happy with the knife and the manufacturer chosen - should be another home run for our little group.

Thanks for the well written explanation Andy. I hope that seeing this from one of our own, who worked so hard on last years knife, will reinforce the fact that no one is looking to get rich on the 2012 project.

Forgetting the profit comment , we have a lot of people committing to buying 1 or more knives. When do we need to have the money ready? I wonder if that changes anything for those that committed?

From my understanding Spark will be taking the money before the knives are ordered. So the money would be due soon I would think. Also as so I haven't voted. I've had fun learning the ropes this year (along with major headaches) but I personal won't be getting a knife at this time due to financial strains. I believe this will be one heck of a nice knife though and I encourage anyone who can afford it to do so. No money will be made on this project as far as I know.

Kevin, You're one of the good guys as far as I'm concerned and I respect your decision. I do think it will be a very popular pattern... not for everyone... but very popular. The collection of money may change this year but an individual bearing the full financial burden just doesn't make sense so I'm willing to prepay or pay a deposit if that's necessary. I just want to get 'er done.

Gary, Thank you for keeping it a secret. ;) :p

Ay, me too. It is very brave of Kevin to take the risk. I will go through with the 2 I commited myself to, even tho I have second thoughts. I have a lot of expenses in a very short amount of time, new Spyderco sprint runs, Hinderers are selling soon,I just scored a 2011 forum knife (YAY!), gotta fix the car and now this. But I am commited to this community, this project and to everyone involved. I won`t let you down.

Really looking forward to this one. I am not the biggest fan of the Trapper pattern, I like 1 large and 1 small blade, but the bomb shield and all the other small features it has, and the interesting bladestyles make this a knife to look forward to. It is a great undertaking for a community and the manufacturer to make a special knife just for us, and this deserves to be backed up. Thanks to GEC and all involved.

If I were buying a custom from a maker, I wouldn't have a problem with providing advance payment it part or whole. This is essentially a limited edition "custom", made by GEC for our little group alone so I don't mind paying in advance for it.

Thanks for the detailed explanation Andy, and thanks again for all your efforts on our behalf. Without folks like you there would be no forum knife.

Insofar as this year goes.......I give an undertaking to buy an additional 3 knives over and above my 2. So a total of 5.
That way we can reach the total faster.
I will offer the additional three for sale later.

Steven

Thanks for understanding my point of view Jake. If it came down to it and it was going to be the life or death of the forum knife I would buy one. I just don't want to have to. I do agree this knife will be something I will regret passing up if I don't end up buying one. Just the all steel construction alone is enough for that to happen. GEC typically uses brass from what I have seen.
