2012 HTM Forum Gunhammer: *Commitment/Sign-up* thread

Sorry I haven't been around much, guys: real-life stuff had me ridiculously busy for the past few weeks. I'm back in action now, though, and have emailed Darrel on the status of this project. There are also quite a few other updates to be passed along on other stuff, which I'll be posting in this thread.

Quick update: Darrel says that the handles have been sent off to the anodizer to be done in the dark green color that got nearly unanimous support a few pages back. Just as a reminder, it's the bottom right in the picture below:

Darrel agreed that doing a progress pics thread was a great idea. He sent me some pics he took a while back of the frames being milled, and I've started a new thread to post those pics and subsequent pics of later stages in the process. You can find the thread here.

Darrel hasn't said what the next batch of pics will be, but my guess is that it'll either be the blades being ground or the handles once they get back from the anodizer.

Any updates would be appreciated
Oops, sorry, updates are getting a bit spread out amongst the different threads dealing with the forum Gunhammer. Here's what I posted in another thread a couple days ago:

They're now getting the forum knife's green handles back from the anodizer and inspecting them. The next step after that will be assembly. Darrel says he should be able to take some pictures early next week, which I'll of course post up as soon as they land in my inbox.

The steel junkies among us will be pleased to know that Darrel says the S90V at 60-62 HRC is some crazy hard stuff to work with. He mentioned it took them 6 hours to hand-rub one blade!

Ok so another month has passed?! Im not sure I like seeing Gunhammers in S90V advertised like crazy and we re still waiting for ours!? What the??? Looks like they have plenty of time to design and make some pretty fancy Hammers with OUR STEEL CHOICE! Am I really the only one kind of disappointed here?!?

Guys,
S90V has been a steel that I have used since it was called 420v in the 1990's.
We are also making CUSTOM DDR GUN HAMMERS with S90v.
Why would you be disappointed? We never promised anything like exclusivity to the steel. We did to the handle color and that promise is in STONE!.

Just to be clear, we use S110V, S90V, S35VN, M390, LMAX, XHP, Several Core San Mai Steels developed Damascus, Mokuti, ZircaTi, Forge Hammers TI (exclusive for DDR), The new Sprayed D2 from Crucible PSF27D2, Damasteel, Carbon Fiber, Ctec, Ivory, G10, and a dozen other materials.
We have the pictures done of the forum knife marked in the custom shop that I will post by tomorrow.
All of the knives will be hand marked one at a time. We are building them now.
Pictures coming soon.
Does that clear everything up?

P.S. The move set us back several months on our estimated delivery schedule.
We do apologize for that. We estimated that we would be down 30 days most.
It ended up being 5 months just to get electric installed.

I suspect the other knives hitting the market just make some people feel like we're less a priority than other customers, because the other knives are hitting the market first, and they weren't even announced when we began discussing this knife, and because we weren't involved in those projects, it might seem that they were less affected by the move than our blades. But remember, we don't know the whole story about who placed orders when, etc, and as Darrel says, there was pretty significant delay from the move. If you remove the five months from the move, that puts us only a few months into production, which is pretty good. And there was a lot less that has to happen for, say, a KC S90V Gunhammer. Remember that snafu with the anodizer? That was at least a month. And ours are getting custom finishes and blademarkings and such, which I will tell you from my own knifemaking perspective is a LOT more work than just a beadblast or something.

Thanks for clearing things up, Darrel, and I look forward to seeing pictures.

I think Neuron cleared it up pretty well when he explained that we should have gotten them before KC but the issue with the anodizer is what set us back.

Thank you Darrel and others for the input! I didn't mean to come across like an a hole, perhaps im just anxious to get my knife! And while i sit here wondering whats going on with the knife i open my new issue of Blade and I see a few fancy Hammers in S90V. I appreciate the prompt response! It will be cool that this is such a limited run so owning one will be special!

Also, stonewashed! And with serial numbers! These are going to be glorious! I can't wait to get mine, and get it into my pocket. I've been updating my EDC a bit. Flashlight went to a Fenix LD12, which I love, firearm went to Walther PPQ (with Dawson Precision night sights), and I'll be going from my M390 gunny to the forum gunny (I know, not that big of a change). I wonder what the forum gunny would be like with a Richard J edge on it...

yeah...Im super excited and not worried about the delay AT ALL. Much better to get something unique and done correctly. Darrel, my friend, take as much time as you need. I will happily wait for it.
Thanks,

Most of my knives get sent to Richard J for his masterful edges!! There are the rare exceptions but most of my knives Richard can get a way better edge than most makers! I ve never owned a Gunny so im looking forward to it very much!! Richard J is out of the hospital btw if you need his services!!
