2012 Jimmy Chin Micro Show in Taipei, Taiwan

So much drool..... Paul nailed it - he always does. Love the display box - what an elegant finishing touch.

I think the darker handled BIG elephant hunter is my overall fave, but it's a tough choice.

This is a 2-speed auto frame lock I designed about 12 years ago and named it the "Ovation". Since I will have 2 of these at the show they are knives number 10 and 11. It's thin, strong and lightning fast with the 2 speed mechanism. 20 degrees out of the handle and the blade shifts into second gear at twice the speed. This fast mechanism won't hold up to regular .040" and .050" thick liners so this model has thick .090" (3/32") 6al4v titanium liners and .050" thick overlay frames that have been rainbow anodized. The blade is 4" of O1 and 15n20 feather pattern damascus. The 416 stainless latch and the window frames are inlayed with colorful abalone pearl. The backspring is D2 tool steel. If time allowed it would be interesting to see what kind of leather Paul Long would supply with these 2 knives. Peacock feather inlays maybe??:p

Hey, Ronnie, fantastic photo work. Those sheaths didn't look that good when they left my shop;)

It was a really fun project and I hope the Taiwan Show is a raging success for you, Jimmy and Kyle even though he won't get to be there. Take a lot of photos there and fill us in when you get back.

Paul

Well,

There's a load of astonishing knives going to Taiwan here, and that group of Paul Long sheaths tops the whole bunch off! What a feast of leather.

Good luck to all.

John

Wow Ron! Your knives look fantastic in every way! :D Great job on them, you guys are going to have a great time I'm sure. I'm so sorry about not being able to come this year, I sure don't like it when medical things come up that change ready made plans. :( It'll be great though and I'm really happy for you and Mrs. Newton and I hope the trip goes well, your knives sell and you have an unforgettable time. :) I can't wait to hear how it all goes when you get back. Again, awesome work on your knives!

Kyle, I hope whatever the "medical things" are they are not serious. I will certainly keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Kyle, I am sorry to hear you will not be able to make it. I hope that your "medical issue" is not serious and we will keep you in our thoughts.

Ron, that folder is something else. I really like that. Tell Jimmy hello for me.

Thanks again everyone for the kind words. Kyle...we'll keep you in our prayers tomorrow. Just received my "Spring 2013" issue of Blade magazine and what perfect timing. Congratulations Jimmy!! This elephant hunter of yours is on page 4 and a full page shot on page 99. I'll bring you my copy in case the new owner wants something a little special to go with the knife.

Thanks fellas for your thoughts. :) I’m having a procedure tomorrow in St. Louis done by a specialist to pin point the location of an ulcer and some old scar tissue in my small intestine which has been causing some random bleeding. After they get a better idea of what it looks like they may go ahead and do surgery. I’m very glad that they have a good idea of what’s going on. The doc didn’t think I should leave the country in case the ulcer starts to bleed, at least not till the problem is resolved.

That's awesome Ron! Jimmy ought to love that! :D

Sorry to hear Kyle, we will keep you in our prayers my friend!

Great looking stuff, guys!!!! Sorry to hear about that Kyle. Unfortuntely, you are not the first person supposedly too young for such gastrointestinal maladies who gets them anyway that i have known. The GOOD news is that young people heal faster so you will be back on your feet in no time, I am sure..;)

All the best, Kyle. You'll be missed, we were all looking forward to seeing you over here again. :)

Ron, I'm not sure if telling Jimmy about the Blade magazine feature is a good idea....we'll never hear the end of it while you can just go back home ! :p He'll be tickled pink over that and congrats to him indeed.

WOW!! EVERY knife shown in this thread has been OUTSTANDING, and that "Ovation" is equally so. The damascus is incredible and EVERYTHING about it looks GREAT! Would LOVE to test fire it:D

Kyle - Sorry to hear of the health issues. Hopefully now that they are on track to pin point the problem and treat it, you will be on the road to good health! Hope it is a short trip...wishing you the BEST!

Peter

Kyle,

I'm sorry to hear about your ulcer. All my best for a speedy recovery.

Ron,

It certainly sounds like you're set up for quite a time on your trip and a very successful show. Give my best to Jimmy.

Gary

Whew, you guys are hot this year. Jimmys Micro Show sounds like the collectors will be treated like Royalty. Nice to see such perfection in the knives and sheaths. Travel safe and have a good time. This type of action helps to span the distance and bring the knife world together.

Thanks again guys and it's nice to see all the support for Kyle. I know he appreciates it.

My final piece for Jimmy's show...a 15 year old handle on this knife and here's why. 15 years ago I started on this handle...many times. I could never finish it. The process kept kicking my butt. I've built only one of these type metal handles per year except this year there's two. I decided to give it one more shot. After all, technology has changed a lot in 15 years and I have better equipment in my shop now. What has made this handle so frustrating is that 3 unlike dissimilar metals are married into one composite. Very different from forging 3 carbon steels together. Plus this is the only one I've done as a frame handle.

The extra effort paid off but not without a few aggravating moments. :grumpy:The 2 tone silver and gold colors to my eye has made this one my favorite metal handle to date. My plans are to cover all the 410 stainless areas with engraving and 24 carat gold inlays. This will have to be done after Jimmy's show. Sorry but my poor photography barely captures the 2 tone silver and gold colors in the handle.

The blade is 5-1/4" with an overall of 10" on this hunter. Thanks for looking.
