2013 AKI - A Quick Update

Thanks again, Ken. Thanks also to MartinR for his photos.

Well, I did get one more AKI 2013 knife which is shown in the CKCA thread. Here it is with makeup on.... ;)

(I'm certain Michael Walker continues to use Damasteel effectively.)

that's like Tron meets Captain America

OK. I posted on the CKCA thread some more pictures of some of Julie Warenski's pieces, and some personal observations.

And with this, I believe that I am done with this report! Whew!

It was a fine writeup, Ken. Well done.

IF a collector is into art knives, this is the best show in the world.

It took me almost 10 years to realize that I really WASN'T into art knives.

I just think it's funny that I am super into knives, but couldn't be bothered to drive 20 minutes and attend the show proper, while you spend the better part of a day getting to it. I feel the way about BLADE that I think you feel about the AKI....although I despise the Atlanta airport.

Glad you were able to come away with some knives that pleased you, for me, that is always the icing on top of a good show.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Hi Ken,

Very clear writing and lots of it. I enjoyed every word. Your time spent posting is appreciated by many. Welcome to MY world! ;)

I didn't realize this following dagger was from the AKI 2013. I wasn't given notice and I asked my client. Francesco shot this wonderfully too, and I see it has been added into the CKCA thread. That's only how I knew.

Here it is again.

STeven, I'd still love to walk with you and listen with intent at your observances at an AKI, even though it's not your 'cup 'o tea' anymore. There are a great many things we're interested in that can be appreciated from afar and up close. You know this and you've said such.

Then I'd take a dip in your SoCal sauna. LOL!

Thanks again, Ken!

It's a jacuzzi, Jim:D

If you get the opportunity to come to the show again, I would attend with you. Have enjoyed time spent with MartinR, Ken, Buddy T., Adam Jacobs, Matt Diskin, and Bob Betzner, looking at knives together and discussing what we see, and how it makes us feel. I completely relate to Ken's thoughts about not having people to discuss knives with, when I first moved to SoCal, I didn't have ANYONE to share this passion with.

Now I have Phil Lobred, Dave Ellis and Adam Jacobs to hang out with, just a phone call away....but I remember being isolated for many years...and it sucked.

Again, Ken, I would like to commend you for clearly presenting your thoughts, and keeping on point about saying what you wanted to say with such passion and well-crafted writing.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I see where you are coming from STeven.

Even thought I thoroughly enjoy Art Knives, they are not my collecting focus so other than Larry Fuegen and Harvey Dean, I would most likely not be in the market for many AKI knives. However, having said that, I would love to attend the show at least once to enjoy the knives, visit with friends and experience the show.

The fact that it's takes place within a couple of weeks of the Fisk Micro Show has also made if difficult to attend in past years. Anyway, I plan to make it out there someday.

I think that you might also enjoy some of Tim Hancock's knives.

...and Rick Eaton's, and John W. Smith, and C. Gray Taylor and Julie Warenski/Curt Erickson....there is a lot to enjoy even if you don't collect art knives.

After attending 4 AKI shows, I think a pause is worthwhile.

I thought many years ago, that this was an elitist show with silly art knives. The knives are not silly, they are amazing.

Well after almost a week of some straight up BS, I'm glad to see all the updates.

I am heartbroken that no one snagged pictures of John W. Smith's wares.

FYI, I did contact him by e-mail asking if he had any pictures that he would let me have to post here.

He never replied.

Let me know if he ever does. I love his stuff, I just wish he was more accessible.

Where abouts in Va are you if you don't mind me asking?

just had a laugh, rereading the title of this thread. Quick update! lol
this's been epic :)
and it's certainly appreciated!

Wolfe asked me to post these knives that were sold at AKI 2013 and photographed by Francesco Pachi.

Hello guys,

Regretfully I had to miss this amazing event for the first time
in many years, but I heard that all the knives at the show
were photographed by Francesco Pachi
, who was also
chosen to do the book on the AKI….

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Great to see the pics of the AKI knives, aweinspiring as they are! Wonderfull with a show that celebrates the art of knives and that the attendees make knives specifically for this show. Im always curious to see what they came up with, what special pieces were made. Like some have already noted, it would be great to get to see all the show knives photographed...guess I have to buy the book abt the show :)
