2013 Christma/Winter KITH Final Edit of Rules

Camera problems here too. I left the shop with it on the roof of my car. Retraced my route 3 times, nowhere in sight.
So not cool.
I see a trip to bestbuy in the near future.

Anyway, good progress Willie.

That's too bad about the camera. I would hate to lose mine. I've had it for about 5 years now, and its like an old friend.

I borrowed a camera today so I could post these.

There's a shadow from the pin I have to take care of, but after I fix that and put an edge on she's done.

I enjoyed making it.

Wow! Great work. I really like that.

Wouldn´t life be sweet, starting every day with slipping that slipjoint in one of your pockets....
(waiting for the blades to come back from HT)

The small knife is turning out better than I expected. Once I started sanding, there is a really great accidental hamon. The hard bottom of the blade is Rc60.5 (15n20.) This is really rough sanding at this point, with 400g scratches still present. No clay was used on this blade. I am trying to push myself with temp and quench control. This one looks better than the 1095 with clay large blade at this point.

Well hope this will work for group two. Had hoped to get something a little different going on but dont think I will finish anything else in time. Blade is 2.75" overall 7.25".

Blade is 52100 3/32", I had one of the blades from this batch tested and it was right around 60-62 HRC after temper. I do a 3 step normalization then a single quench with 2 2hour tempers. These were tempered at 410f which gave the above stated hardness. The scales are natural waterfall bubinga. Its hard to photograph how it looks in hand. It feels really good and should be a nice little EDC/slicer for whatever you see fit, its just not gonna make a good prybar or anything like that. It has a 600grit hand rubbed finish on the blade and the handle is about 1000grit finish.

I will make a nice leather sheath for it, just got another order in ahead of time so gotta get that done first then Ill finish up a sheath for it.

I got a bunch of sanding done this weekend. I didn't get to the guards yet. The hamon in the large knife looks like it will be my best one yet. I have a few scratches in the plunges to clean up, then it will be time to fit the guards.

Sanding by far takes the most time of anything. I love getting to that point when there is a hamon involved so I can see it develope but other then that I cant say I look forward to it.

Hand sanding the blade pretty much finished! Now to get out the pad sander and make quick work of the handle. I still have some reshaping to do on it. I'm shopping for samegawa material, and have been practicing my tsuka-ito wrapping. Still not sure if I'll put a tsuba on it. I'm going with a more Americanized tanto because I'm not up to making all the various parts of the tsuka.

Zaph, I like that. (BTW, I got the shipment- haven't set them up yet. Thanx.)

Here's some of my progress.

Large knife, 220 grit sanded- showing the Hamon after 2 min in vinegar, just to see what is there.

Two more after a bunch of sanding. The hamon is there, but It is washed out in the pic. I have a few touchups yet along the spine. I can see them in the picture, but they are hard to see in hand.

I had to search samegawa and tsuka-ito. That's going to look really nice man.

And that harpoon looks great! Can't wait to see it with a guard and handle.

Glad to see you're enjoying your new rockwell tester, Warren!

I've spent two years forging this blade to shape and it's exciting to be almost finished with it. It started as a billet ½" x 1" x 3½" long. It's the most forged to shape blade that I've done yet.
