2013 Forum knife?

I'm going to vote for a Texas jack style knife from one of the three manufacturers. 6232 size or 6292 size would be fine. A swayback or Congress jack pattern would be nice. Now, I'll go back to spectating for now.

Almost there Gary. Now you just need the elusive ring knife to complete the set.

I know I'm alone in this, but for once I'd like the annual BFC forum knife to be a single blade. A sodbuster with nice wooden scales, maybe yellow bone or micarta. Probably too boring for most folks though.

I like the idea of a Sodbuster, with really nice scales.

Single blade sheepsfoot #47 in stag or micarta instead of delrin. A relatively affordable way to get a pseudo-swayback with steel liners, good blade steel in O1, and it's already set up as a shadow pattern. GEC would only have to swap in new handle material and this could keep costs quite low.

Edited to add: Or if people like the Sodbuster-type Farm & Field version better, same deal.

This sounds like a great idea.

A nice sodbuster would be great, and I agree that micarta scales would be nice to see!

The Congress Jack came in second last year and should at least be given a spot on the poll list this year. I'd vote for it.

2010 was nickle silver for everything (liners and pins). :)

I find it hard to pay with my other hobbies and such dropping over $100 but at present its the only knife I factor in for the whole year.

i stand corrected, although looking through my emails with charlie i kept referring to steel, huh, guys musta thought i was loopy, amazing they let me do the label:)

BTW WHALER!!! GO WHALER OR GO HOME:D

Totally concur, there are several good ideas in this thread. Yet another knife that would be relatively easy to configure on the basis of preexisting patterns.

Idk my friend, I don't know if I could carry a folding shovel in my pocket all day long. :p

I would, in all seriousness, have to agree with Ed, the Congress Jack needs to have a seat in this year's poll.
What about a Scout pattern? how do you guys feel about that as a possibility?

We will also have to see if Spark wants to front the project again this year. He didn't have nearly the headaches with this project that he did with the other forum knife. So, he might be willing, but we will have to ask him.

Spark has had some home issues come up and has not been spending much time on the forums recently. Gary and I will see what we can do to contact him.

Meantime some comments.
  • We reached high last year and the knife came in at $115 each. At that price, some members had to drop out of the buy. So something super exotic or pricey is likely out of consideration.
  • Gene is right about Case. IIRC the minimum order is 500, which is more than we can absorb.
  • If the knife company has to develop tooling, and they aren't planning on making other knives on that tooling, we will likely have to pay for the tooling. That adds a lot to the cost, so do consider something similar to what is already made. GEC has not charged us for tooling because both times they have used it for other knives. Queen already had the tooling for a barlow pattern.
  • I really really want stainless blades this year.:D

Boy Scout or camp knife with jigged bone , can opener , bottle opener and gotta have a bail

I may be off the reservation here but, I'm thinking a nice long sleek toothpick would be nice.

Thanks to Charlie (Waynorth), I can now throw up a (lousy) picture of all the forum knives together.

I wouldn't mind seeing a large toothpick this year myself.

I agree, Frank. I like 1095, but we have had it on the last 3 knives. It's time for something different.

While it's been great that our last 2 knives have resulted in new patterns, It's a little unfair to expect GEC or any other maker to put forth the expense to do it every single year. A variation of an already existing pattern sounds much better if it allows us to get a fancier handle material. I think a Bull Nose with some ram horn or stag covers and a Cyclops Steel Works stamp to go along with the BF 7 Dot would be fantastic! I wouldn't mind nice wood instead if that's what it takes to make the pricing reasonable.

I want a sodbuster.

I'm not overly concerned about the manufacturer's tooling charge because they will end up using the pattern eventually on a production run.

Having worked on some of the past forum knives....I would make one suggestion since the 2013 talk is starting up.....and I am saying this for the sake of the forumites who will have to spend hours/days on this and parse through everyone thoughts and ideas.....don't crowd up a thread with your DREAM knife if it is not realistic to produce within our (somewhat) agreed upon price range or if it, in a reasonable person's opinion, would not appeal to the masses. You are not going to get a 5 blade swiss arm knife and you are not going to get a knife with a green acrylic handle (or purple....2012 reference/joke). Put forth ideas that at least 200 people will like and that won't cost more than the prior year's knife. Personally...I would like to see a blade that comes in well under $100.

Oh....and Gene....you are doing the artwork again (you're not getting out of it as easy as you thought you would) :)

If we're talking stainless and possibly a single blade folder or a fixed blade, what about Buck?

I'm thinking of something along the lines of a customized 113 Skinner or a drop point 112. Or maybe a limited run of the 500 Duke.

It the idea of camper takes hold, it needs scissors.

Would they be willing to use our tang stamp? love all my buck knives but we may run into the issue of "not enough orders to warrant production" and how they feel about custom runs during a recession when they have large orders to fill with walmart and other corporations.

I think a sodbuster should definitely go up on the polls. It appears that a lot of others in this thread feel the same way. A sodbuster or bull nose in D2 or O1 steel with micarta, exotic wood, or stag covers for $100 or less would be my first choice.
