2014 Forum Knife

I am not any kind of expert on cutlery steel, but I think stainless has gotten a bad rap due to some company's poor heat treatment of their 420 series (usually) stainless.

GEC uses 44OC and their heat treat is top notch. 440C is a premium high carbon stainless, and the GEC line holds up very favorably to properly heat treated 1095 as far as taking and holding an edge, IMO. Most of my GEC carry knives are 1095, but I've been very happy with the few I edc in stainless, so I'm good either way.

O-1 is a different animal and I'm not sure there is any advantage over 1095 unless you were forging the blades. D-2 is nice although tough to sharpen once dull. Then there are the super steels like A-2, CPM 3V or 154 CM, but these would substantially increase the cost of production. All things considered, 1095 or 440C ain't so bad!

Every year I've spoken for stainless for a change. GEC does it very tidy too! But seems I'm always a lone voice crossing a wilderness of rust (patina...) :D as the carbon tribe holds sway...;)

I've tried for the same, but am unhopeful that will ever happen. Using 440C would increase the price of the knife. 440C is harder to machine, harder to heat treat.

I'm easy. Honestly, I like a patina from a cosmetic point of view but I'll buy whatever gets the vote for this year. 440c is a good steel indeed.

I love the 2013 Forum knife and have no problem with the process or end result. I would have liked to see that knife in 440C or stainless of any type though.

I'd also be very happy about stainless steel or D2 for the 2014 knife, although the odds are against it I guess :)

The carbon tribe fend off an attack by the stainless beast.

I'm normally a 1095 snob but I would be down for some quality stainless as well. I prefer GEC overall as well but the 2 Canal Street Cutlery knives I have are very impressive as well & I would say they are very comparable to GEC in the fit & finish & just overall quality of materials. If its down to those 2 manufacturers & the fact that Charlie is involved its 110% guaranteed I'll be buying one even if its a pattern I don't care for. Plus it would be my first stag knife & what a cool intro to stag!

Whoa. Hang on a sec.Raquel was in the stainless tribe I think. Mind you the carbon tribe did have the equally lush Martine Beswick.
Gaaah decisions decisions. I'll get one of each! Oh knives? don't really mind either way .Has there been a D2 forum knife before?

Yes, the Queen made Barlow in 2009 I think.

The stainless tribe is acting in self-defence...:D:thumbup:

Well my forum knives only go back to 2010BC. Looks like I missed out on D2 by a million years or so. I'd definitely approve of Raquel (stainless)with the 2014 knife but very happy to make do with Martine(carbon).
Here endeth the off topic tangent. Mods be praised.

I don't want to interject to much into this thread because I am somewhat of a new person around here. Even though I suppose most of you fine people know me by now but I digress. I'll jump in on the steel topic just to give my two cents then I will continue to just toll the living heck out of this thread lol. Anyways, I was kind of hoping for a tool steel on this one. I do like GEC's 440c, and love it but I was hoping there would be more of a push for o1 then there seems to be. Obviously I will be happy with whatever is decided and polled on, after all it's not just one persons knife. Just kind of hoping others would be more inclined to push something other then stainless. I do see the argument made for it though considering the past knives.

*ok sneaking away now*

*drags digitallurbancamo back* Your not allowed to leave yet, were discussing blade steels and uhh something about blade steel tribes, Raquel Welch... Well on second thought you may leave.

Another vote for a carbon steel here, I need to expand my carbon steel knife collection.
