Here is my take on the weekend. Every year this gathering grows more and more. It is hard to capture everything with the camera since there are so many side things going on. I am not much of a social butterfly, but in a setting like this it is very easy to have a great time.
Special thanks to Ethan and Kabar. They sent a huge prize box and we made sure everyone got some nice steel. One fine young man came to the gathering with zero Beckers (I know right?) and left with two as well as a custom sheath for them. I hope he is a fan for life.
Here is the prize table with donations from Ethan, the Trades, and daizee.
A huge thanks to Trailbum and his family for opening up their home and hearts to all of us for this event. We are getting to know them well and Amanda and I think of them as extended family. They are very eager to help anyone out and share embarrassing stories about their kids. It is great to see the family grow up through the years.
A nod to daizee for giving me an honest critique of my work and tips on how to improve. He showed me some of the flaws on his work and taught me that no one is perfect. I spent a good amount of time picking his brain and he was not shy about sharing tips about his craft, even though he did loose me with some of the metallurgy stuff. He also donated two kiradashi knives to the prize table.
Thanks to Granite for teaching the paracord class and handing out lanyards. He was also quick with sarcasm and Monty Python quotes. He also was not shy about giving advise about grinding, belt selection and stuff like that. It is also great to see the girls again. In just one year we could see a change in them. I hope they enjoyed themselves and will continue this tradition.
Speaking of youngsters, It was great to see alwaysoutdoors and his buddy Bjames. These young men seem to have a good head on their shoulders and a love of the outdoors. I especially like to see the younger generation being exposed to nature and outdoors skills. I hope we can meet up again gentlemen and I can't wait to see that knife Ben!
A big thanks to the Trades. Even though they were not in attendance, they were there in spirit. The sent enough canvas bags to go around and they were very much appreciated. I hope Amanda and I can hang out with you two some day.
Lastly Bladite for taking time out of his busy schedule to some hang out with us. Also thanks for bringing all those toys for us to play with and for letting me shoot that bow! He provided us with some Becker history and tested us on our Becker blade database knowledge. It was good to have Becker royalty with us.
Now for some pictures. I narrowed them down to 70 or so pictures and I know I didn't capture everything that happened.
Hang on for picture overload!
We left our house and took our time getting down to trailbum's property. Here is Becker taking a nap on the way down. It seemed like he knew he had to charge his batteries for a weekend on running around like an idiot.
Amanda and I had to do some shopping about halfway there for supplies and he had to be held when we got back to my Jeep.
We got to the clearing in the afternoon and started to setup camp and get the fire going. Of course the BSing began as well.
The new hawk target, before revision 2.0.
trailbum had a shadow for most of the event.
More early morning BSing.
The drink of choice.
It is unlawful to have a Beckerhead gathering without bacon.
Becker staged himself in the middle of everything.
We did some show and tell, actually it lasted all weekend.
Some of daizee's work.
The 3 muk Amanda is the proud new owner of.
More of daizee's work. I love the bird and trout on top.
More of daizee's work.
Two proud owners and the happy maker.
Granite's WIP 7. This thing is going to steal your lunch money when it is done.
daizee chopping with a Patrol Machete.
Another reason to love the fall.
Trailbum collecting a tree for the chopping contest.
Trailbum's oldest having his turn during the chopping contest.
alwaysoutdoors getting it done.
BJames rocking the clipped 9.
Trailbum showing that he isn't a stump humper.
Amanda hitting it hard.
Trailbum's youngest getting the hang of it.
daizee getting used to a non Rhode Island legal blade.
While Granite was looking for his 9 we switched logs on him. We threw up a log at least triple to size and kept quiet to see if he would notice. He did...
Not letting the injured elbow slow him down, Mike swung for the fences.
After the chopping contest we had some fun with slingshots. Notice the BK-9 and mora piggyback setup? Blasphemous or brilliant? You decide.
More in the next post....
