2015 Forum Knife - It's Never Too Early To Think About the Next Blade Forum Knife

That looks just like the punch Victorinox uses on certain alox models. And, I agree - it creates perfectly round holes. It's made by forming a sheet of metal v/s milling & grinding like GEC has done. Bending the sheet stock gives it the naturally round back side, and the lip left behind makes it easy to lift with your nail.

I think this kind of punch is the worst from a performance standpoint; nothing more than a uselessly blunt knife edge:

From the prior great eastern offerings, this is by far the best performer, which is what I would push for in a forum knife. It's milled & ground though, so I imagine significantly more expensive to produce:

I had a vision earlier this afternoon.....:D The next FK will be a variant of 38...

Like this, Jake?

Exactly like that Scott! :) I've been trying to find one of those but with either the ebony or antique jigged black bone scales but it's one of those GEC patterns nobody really talks about & you never see on the exchange.

I really like the Gunstock pattern idea though for the forum knife and seems as if quite a few other do as well. I have a couple GEC 76 Gunstocks and they are a great knife but I also have a Queen Gunstock that is just a little bigger than the GEC and it is also an excellent knife. It's the only Queen I've had so far that is just as nice fit and finish wise as any of my GEC's. Not sure when it was made but I really enjoy this knife.

If we are going to do a punch, I would LOVE to have one like this. Thanks to Duncan for the pic.

I think that GEC bullet would be perfect. It's punch looks much more usable than my Colt, where the effective cutting edge ends at about 1/2". I really like the blade it's combined with also.

So, gunstock in rust red micarta, sheepsfoot blade with a punch lifter? Would a sheepsfoot on a gunstock look weird?

I really hope this knife heads in the direction this thread has. I'm sure I will buy it regardless, but that would be really cool. I like the idea of something more unique. Just a random pattern knife that looks nice and has a forum stamp is cool, but something unique that you can't get without going custom otherwise really would make a special knife, even if it cost a little more. Judging from the knives in this group it seems like something pretty nice and unique would fit the bill.

On a side note, thanks to this group for turning me on to traditionals. I have a lot of knives of all types, but was mostly a spyderco, benchmade, microtech carrier for a while. I now spend my free time browsing for old knives and feel naked without my case 11031. Bunch of good people and beautiful knives here.

Ok, I'm not digging the punch-lifter at all.

I think a punch (a BF knife first) is an excellent idea.

The caplifter has been done already, the 2011 knife, and it was marvellous.

I think a punch-lifter will detract from a classic and traditional pocket knife tool; be it from either direction.

I agree, Paul. I think that this year's knife should be something fresh. I would like to see something that isn't based off of what is popular in the mix right now. I'd love to see a coffin jack, or a doctor's knife, or a tuxedo, or a pen knife! I hope that this years knife revives a popular, classic pattern that hasn't hit the markets in recent years. There are so many patterns out there that were staples in the market 100 years ago, that just really don't get that much attention today. This has been a really big year for traditional knives. I would love to see some risk involved in this year's pattern, while maintaining it as traditional as possible, and I am sure Charlie is daring enough to try it(if he wants to), and pull off something absolutely magnificent.

I can't even begin to claim that I know enough about popular old patterns to have a valid opinion on a decision of this magnitude, and that is why I am more than happy to leave it to our experts. Whatever decision is reached, I am 100% sure it will be amazing, but that sure doesn't make the anticipation any easier! I cannot wait to find out what this year's knife will be!

Agree absolutely Paul

Excellent post Evan, and those are all great suggestions I think

Sage words from an aspiring master cutler!

Great post Evan.

What about a non GEC?

I've been wondering about that but it seems like the general consensus is that, myself included that GEC has headed the last..4 years of bladeforums knives? Forgive me if I'm incorrect about that fact. They allow great f+f/wiggle room for suggestions/custom configurations/patterns so I don't see why not. The SFO's have proven they get it right. I'm all for another company since this would be my first year seeing the culmination of a bladeforums traditional knife but I'm still biased towards gec.

I may be in the minority, but I'd like to see a peanut, or a similar knife. Keeps it cheap enough I might have a chance of owning one without selling a limb. I am currently job searching, so new knives are off the table for the moment, but hopefully when this one comes around.

Well Charlie did look elsewhere last year too, and Queen came up with a very nice knife, which was of course eventually made as the 'Eric's Jack'. Had it been carbon rather than stainless, I think I'd have probably voted for it :)
