2015 Forum Knife - It's Never Too Early To Think About the Next Blade Forum Knife

I'd be out on the weaver- I'd be glad to trade you mine, it has never gotten the pocket time it deserves. That slight hook to the blade made it a PITA for me to sharpen on a plain stone.

That's a great point about sharpening. The curved blade is probably why it's not a popular pattern. I'll be sending you an email shortly!

Your gunstock knife was much better Sam!!! I'd pay right now for that

Thanks Jake - just trying to throw some alternates out there. I agree though - I like the gunstock idea a LOT more!

Just a few random thoughts here, then I'll give it up for a while..... Looking back at past years patterns we have:

Sleeveboard
Canoe
Serpentine (Stockman?)
Barlow
Swell Center
Teardrop
Trapper / Reverse swayback (Not sure what you call 2011 - #74 frame??)
Congress
Basic Jack

We have not had:

Gunstock
Cigar
Swayback
Sodbuster
Melon Tester
Toothpick
Elephant Toe / Sunfish
Dog Leg / Hounds Tooth
Any sort of lockback
Any sort of fixed blade
And tons of other patterns I can't even think of....

My preference, (right now) which may change on a whim at any time:

1. Gunstock
2. Lock back Sodbuster (by far the cheapest option...)
3. Cigar / Equal End - Carpenters knife or 2 blade cigar stockman?
4. Swayback
5. Elephant Toe / Sunfish / Whaler (a biggun!!)
6. Marlin Spike (yeah, right....)

Stainless is OK, we're probably due for one anyway, just hoping for something better than 440. CPM154 or CTS-XHP would be an exceptional choice.

Bone or wood is great. Lots of folks like stag - I can't stand the stuff. Lignum Vitae would be a really neat wood....

I really liked the EO sheepfoot WLST's they did with swedge and no nail nick.

In the same ballpark, sounds good. Small as many want....an elusive pattern. Never been done as a BF knife. Though I would like to point out we have never done a drop-point either. ;)

Long bolster with BF stamp, drop-point EO....oh lala.

It's going to be interesting to see how the majority goes this year. There's a lot of folks that want something peanut sized. Now, I have a peanut, for posterity's sake, but in general despise small knives. 3-1/2'' is about the smallest I'll carry, although I prefer something in the 4'' to 4-1/4'' range for EDC. The scale of the gunstock I posted earlier is based on 4-1/4'' closed; scaling it down under 3-3/4'' probably wouldn't work very well. And, with all the rage about the Charlows, it looks like the #15 size at around 3-1/2'' closed is pretty widely accepted, so we'll probably see options presented around that range. Anyway....

Here's a combo that might be kind of fun. It's a #79 frame, #56 Weaver blade and the PunchLifter; 3-3/4'' closed. I've never had a Weaver - the single blades seem pretty elusive, and the 3 blade variants are a bit too chunky. I think 2 useful tools would fit nicely:

Sounds like it isn't too popular but I love this. Could make a flat cutting edge to make it easier to sharpen if that is the big turnoff.

Yes! Equal end, single spring, two blades. Perfect. Maybe even the White Owl 68 frame. Or maybe the secondary blade could be a punch lifter!

Some creative ideas here to get your favorite tools into a knife. But I'll suggest, as I have in the past, that a lot of folks could scratch all their itches by just considering a SAK (or a scout/camper pattern if SAK isn't traditional enough).

So just throwing this out there. But I know Victorinox does SFO's. Swiss Bianco and what not. But has this ever been considered? I know the SAK isn't for everyone but when you think about it almost everyone is happy.

How about a Drop-point EO 25? The BF WLST so to speak. Perhaps in some nice saw-cut red bone? :D

I'm torn.

As a massive fan of the stubs I would be very interested in this, however - I've yet to acquire a drop point 25 as they are one of the most elusive patterns to emerge from Titusville within the last decade and to do a blade forum version (which I predict will top at numbers over 400 this year) would totally dissolve their exclusivity.

And although yet to be successful, I'm loving the hunt :)

I'd be more in favour of this - I've plenty of WLST mutton :D

I don't own a WLST. But I would be happy to change that. And I would be happy with any #25 if it was chosen as the 2015 knife.👍

Single bladed weaver would be cool. :) Been wanting to try one out but can't find one of the gec 56 dogleg version anywhere.

I don't own a WLST either, so maybe this would be a good excuse to try one...
But all the forum knives have been small, except for the chubby trapper a few years back, so I would still favor a 53-size single spring cigar.

Ok, I know that this thread is a jumbled bunch of ramblings....but.... ;) I still really like the idea of a Barlow (or whatever other style) with a punch, or punch lifter. But I've recently discovered the amazing function of the curved punch as found on this little Colt below. For a cheap knife, this punch is sharp and makes perfect round holes from small to large. Found use for it on many occasions. Quite handy, and unique in terms of the number of popular folders I've seen it on. I think it would be cool to see it on a forum knife. For something a little different.

I just had to open my coke with a bic lighter. Come on punch lifter!
