2015 Forum Knife - It's Never Too Early To Think About the Next Blade Forum Knife

Thanks for collecting those posts, rye_a.
So far I haven't stuck my foot in my mouth; we'll have to see about that!
:D

Considering that we are 900 (now 901) posts into this thread I'd say that you are doing extremely well! Thanks again for leading the charge on this project.

I've been following this thread since the beginning and buying quite a few traditionals lately. It seems to me that a very popular model at this time is a #15 with spear point main blade and cap lifter as a secondary. I would love to see this made for the 2015 knife as the only ones I have found are not for sale and were modded by members of this forum.

The only other design I think would fit this bill would be a Barlow model with the same two blades. The 15 frame would be my first choice but either would do.

If not the forum knife then is there enough interest in this style for Charlie or Mike to do an SFO?

I'd like to see if other members feel the way I do.

I'd like to see if other members feel the way I do.

I feel quite the opposite.

I haven't counted up any production totals but I'm sure that by far the #15 will have the highest production numbers of any other pattern GEC have produced. It is also the most widely traded commodity here on the traditional exchange. I'm equally sure that there will be many a run of variations of the pattern in the future, be they SFO or not. The 15 has been a rip-roaring success for all concerned. :D

Which is why I'd like to see something more original for the forum knife, not a repeat of the most popular pattern Great Eastern has made to date.

Paul, Andi, I agree. There have been many variations on the theme of 15 and doubtless there will be more... but an FK knife needs something less predictable. The 92 Eureka frame is something to reconsider, only this time single-blade and why not Clip instead of Spear master? Steel liners or stainless with stainless blade, Barehead as that keeps cost down- and often looks better in my view. Add smooth bone (not used so far) plus an unusual shield and you've got a strong individual.

Regards, Will

I really need another #15 with a caplifter. I would be all over that. Put me down for two.

But I have to admit that Paul's argument is sound. The forum knife is an opportunity to try something different or raise the profile of a less appreciated traditional pattern.

I'm still hoping for a double bladed, single spring like the White Owl, which I believe has not been produced in the last four years. Put a bale on it, and I'm in for two!

Will, I think I would vote for a #92 as you described. It is a very graceful and somewhat overlooked pattern.

Dr. Scott was talking about a single spring knife. In addition, many folk like the idea of a crown lifter; however, they want to get away from the #15 frame.

How about something like this EKA built on GEC's #68 frame with smooth bone covers?

It just seems like everybody solution involves #15 or caplifter. Yes, a lot of people would want it, but it doesn't mean we should give it to them. I would really like to try something different. Mr. Bitters, that bolster-less knife is something that I mentioned (previous page I think) that would be cool to try (minus the cap lifter). The scales could be negotiable.

Seems like the real debate is what the goal of the forum knife is. Some seem to want a knife that is a unique version of what is popular now, which I understand. A sheep lifter #15 would be a pretty good unique representation of what seem popular around here currently. Makes sense for a 2015 knife to be a representation of what is popular in 2015.

The other camp seems to want a nice version of a less popular (currently) traditional pattern to get away from what is already such a commonly purchased knife pattern currently. I think this would be cool with an elephant toe our something similarly unique. Maybe a hawk bill.

I can see both sides and there are a lot of good sounding suggestions. I'm not sure which one sounds best and I'm sure whatever it is will be a nice knife. I guess I like the idea of a little more modernized version if a traditional pattern. Even the hardened sod buster was a cool idea.

A lot of people seem pretty firm in their idea of what the knife should be. Will be interesting to see what it ends up as. Maybe they completely throw everyone off with a fixed blade or scout knife.

Some great ideas and Charlie thank you for keeping this going over the last few years. whatever we end up picking, I'm in.:D

Blast from the past! It's been a while since I saw you amongst these pages, how're you keeping?

I think Paul summed it up pretty well  I like cap-lifters too, but we've already had one. Sorry HS :)

Good to see you here Gus

Scout knife!

Ha ha, I said it!

Seriously, scout knife. 4 tools. Spear blade with long pull and swedge of course, can opener, bottle opener with flat head screw driver, and punch. Bone scales with a bail. 5 or 6 on pull, probably a 5 would be best. If Queen, their version of a can opener. If GEC, I would love to see the old time can opener used. Size? Basic scout size.

I actually would love a Scout as discribed

I normally don't chime in on threads like this because my knowledge of traditional knives amounts to a drop in the bucket compared to most of you. I am a big fan of single blade traditional knives mostly because I like a thin knife that is pocket friendly. That being said I would still be in favor of a single spring two bladed knife. How about the Eisenhower pattern, or does Case own that pattern?

A Scout knife would also be very cool, however I think it would end up being too expensive.

A Sunfish makes for a nice single blade that is big enough to hold on to, but not so big as to be uncomfortable to carry. Elephant Toes the same, but need to be a bit more creative in carrying. GEC makes a dandy version of each.
