2015 Forum Knife - It's Never Too Early To Think About the Next Blade Forum Knife

I'm very interested to hear from Charlie which manufacturers are interested in working on this SFO, and which patterns they have planned for upcoming runs that we can piggyback on to keep within our pricing constraints. I'm a little concerned that if we keep going with GEC, Queen and Canal Street might lose interest in competing for our business.

I like many of Queens patterns but they need to show more consistency in QC before I'd feel comfortable selecting them.

Can we pick a new pattern? What about a sowbelly, sowbelly split backspring whittler, or 2-blade sowbelly (double end premium jack w/ clip and sheepfoot)

Queen has a really nice 3-blade sowbelly pattern. It would look good with a "barbie shield". I think they could pull off the 2-blade sowbelly as well.... since it would basically be their 4-blade sowbelly with two blades and a spring removed.

What is the difference between a sunfish and an elephant toenail? Are they the same? I think we are talking over 4 inches closed. I agree. It would be nice to see this pattern in the conversation. I would love to see a Bladeforums elephant toenail!

A sunfish/elephant toenail (they are the same) would be a great choice in my opinion also. Have tried in years past, maybe we will get more momentum this year.;)

Thanks for the hellos. Still hang out here, just am a lot quieter these days. This place will always mean a lot to me because of the people here along with Frank and Gary. I still smile, think about and am grateful for this place daily.

Elephant Toenail - because you never know when you might need to flip a pancake or spread an entire jar of peanut butter at one time.

As to the cap-lifter - I guess I must be the only person that almost never needs to open a capped bottle. I have no need of such a thing on any pocket knife, and if I do, my Leatherman and Vic Cadet both already have bottle openers. Normally if I am having a beer I am either at a restaurant where they open your bottles for you, or at home where I have kitchen tools that do the job. The rest of you must sit around constantly drinking bottled beers while away from kitchens.

As to an actual suggestion - how about a Norfolk variant? There was a suggestion of a 2-blade single-spring knife. That would fit the bill and GEC already has a pattern for it.

If I am not mistaken, I thought I saw a Norfolk in a pic from the Canal Street Shot Show table so maybe they could bid again this year. I really like the Eric's Jack that they came up with. And they even know how to use stainless steel in their knives.

My kitchen is full of knives, most restaurants provide knives. Why is it that we all carry knives?

I'm having a huge amount of fun just thinking about all the knives put forward so far. This thread has actually inspired me to buy a couple patterns already.

No matter what ends up as this year's offering, I'll be buying one. Still, I only carry one of the 5-6 that I own of those we've had so far.

I like the idea of a Sunfish, I think they are fun looking. Plus, as a modern folder guy just getting into traditionals, I find the blade shape a nice intermediate one.

Also, if people are posting "Hold Fast" pictures, this is my favorite

Has a nontraditional ever been considered for the forum knife or is there some agreement?

That would sort of defeat the purpose of a Traditional Folders and Fixed Blades forum knife, would it not?

I have always held a strange fascination for the Whaler/Toenail/Sunfish pattern. That was the very first custom slipjoint I bought, shown in the bottom of this photo:
