2015 Forum Knife - It's Never Too Early To Think About the Next Blade Forum Knife

Good to see you here, Gus! Thanks for stopping by. You and Blues made my first forray into traditional knives a true pleasure and were very welcoming. I do remember that for years you championed the sunfish. Maybe this will be the year. :)

This place will always mean a lot to me because of the people here along with Frank and Gary.

This caused me to do a double take. Then I lol-ed. :D

the rest of you must sit around constantly drinking bottled beers while away from kitchens.

I try to ....and usually if I need to be in the kitchen there is some wine handy or preferably beer.

Seriously, does the anti cap lifter crowd not go to crawfish boils or bbqs? Maybe a tailgate every once in a while?

das-boot-21.jpg

The crew of the Porch about to brave the icy depths of this years trad knife decision.
A treacherous stretch of water strewn with hazards, submerged reefs, blind channels, dead ends and sunken dreams.
How will the master mariner of mesterly manipulation navigate our fearless crew to the treasure?
Or has the die been already cast?
Yo Ho a double ration of rum me hearties. Oh wait strike that from the ships log. It's only 2PM and I'm on galley duty tonight. To the kitchen!

Meako, it's well past rum:30 here so I will take a it my friend. I am ready to brave the icy waters and know the crew is sea worthy. Carry on gents, carry on.
:D

I use the screwdriver so often, maybe we should call it a screwdriver blade and see if that is more popular?! How about a whale sized screwdriver blade on our whaler, with a little cutout that could be used as a caplifter when marooned on a desert isle!😜
In keeping with the nautical theme, how about pre-ban kraken beak as a handle material?

I like the idea, but think the kraken beak may put us over $100. Might be on the right track though.

We could just call the caplifter/screwdriver a Kraken Beak. Then it could be a Whaler with a Kraken Beak blade

Be cheaper to give away a bottle of Kraken spiced rum with every knife purchased:rolleyes:
Melt me down for knives would you?

Thanks for the hellos. Still hang out here, just am a lot quieter these days. This place will always mean a lot to me because of the people here along with Frank and Gary. I still smile, think about and am grateful for this place daily.

I'd settle for ebony! ;)

I love trollin' this thread; you guys are crazy! (in a good way) :) The Popeye pict cracks me up!

I gotta say, tho, since I volunteered to handle and ship the forum knife again this year, Whalers are a little problematic when shipping is involved due to the size of the knife. In other words, bigger package equals more $$$ on the back end. Same goes for fixed blades of medium to large size. This isn't huge but needs to be added into the final cost.

Consider too that Whalers are typically over $100 to start with, more in the $140 range for a GEC, but hard to find on the secondary market under $250. Remember the GEC Rendezvous Whaler? Originally 30 made and sold for around $220 and now I doubt you can buy one for less than $700. Personally, I don't mind uping the ante on the 2015 Forum Knife so we have more options, and the GEC Whaler would be a excellent prospect for our club knife IMHO.

$.02 spent; thanks for listenin'.

I'm all for keeping it affordable, but Barry could probably talk me into paying a few dollars more. 😃

Well, I was about to mention, I'd like a scaled down sunfish even more than the bigguns. I think both GEC and Queen have a smaller, pocketable sunfish pattern that deserves a look. I think the big pull for me would be some kind of knock out jigged bone covers in a bright, fun color or sunburst type look. Cool shield, a couple of great blades..... BAM!!!!!!!

This thread is now almost 6 months old! Not quite so early now....... I still would love to see a sodbuster or canoe:)
If not that, a smaller knife would be great! About 3" closed to make it work friendly for all of us that work in non-knife friendly environments:thumbup:

My "non-knife friendly" environment is limited to 2.5"...so I guess I'm stuck with a peanut. :grumpy:

Good post Barry, I'm sure that you and the team will do us all proud my friend

(47 frame, Sheepsfoot blade, long pull, rat-tail bolsters, ebony covers ;) :D)

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'd definitely be willing to break the $100 budget for a long-pull (match striker?) Whaler. I'd even go for corn cob jigged bone, since I KNOW that would add at least one more vote :)
