2015 Forum Knife - It's Never Too Early To Think About the Next Blade Forum Knife

My posts are beginning to get preposterous and irrelevant. Agood indicator that a decision has or will soon be made:thumbup:

Has a nontraditional ever been considered for the forum knife or is there some agreement?

Note there have been "year" knives for some of the other forums on this BBS. I even posted a photo of the 2012 one from the Custom Forum. I think there's still some of last years non-traditional's available from Spark.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'd definitely be willing to break the $100 budget for a long-pull (match striker?) Whaler. I'd even go for corn cob jigged bone, since I KNOW that would add at least one more vote :)

:D heh heh heh

Back to my single-spring two blades refrain:D:D

A modified GEC 68 White Owl that would have tip bolsters to distinguish it as a Forum Knife, you could use the 33 Conductor frame for this as well. Even a shadow version in natural micarta for strength....Something new but already the existing frame is there, big enough blades for the Forum stamp, not had a single-spring two blade knife before...plus the cosmetic changes I suggested and smooth bone perhaps?

Here's a Red Owl in its habitat

Well, I was about to mention, I'd like a scaled down sunfish even more than the bigguns. I think both GEC and Queen have a smaller, pocketable sunfish pattern that deserves a look. I think the big pull for me would be.....

With GEC's "smaller, pocketable sunfish pattern"?

The "big pull" is the pull! Mondo stiff little buggers, those blades.

I'd love a Whaler, but appreciate Barry's spoiling our fun noting the practical implications of shipping such beasties, along with other considerations.

Better not to add potential complications to this delicate process, perhaps?

Up to this point, the ones they have made are stiff, but I don't think they have to be. I'm sure we could express this concern and steps could be made to adjust.

The queen small sunfish is about 3.5" closed.

Sunfish and whalers are some of the least useful knife patterns to me...so selfishly, I hope they do not go that route. I'll buy one regardless, but I would never carry it.

A Sunfish makes for a nice single blade that is big enough to hold on to, but not so big as to be uncomfortable to carry. Elephant Toes the same, but need to be a bit more creative in carrying. GEC makes a dandy version of each.

It's all about being creative in carrying...

The large ones are a little cumbersome. The small ones are actually pretty useful..... and more importantly, they are a whole lot of fun.

Seriously, my little watch pocket sunfish, is just about the most fun pocket knife I own. A tweaked BF version with some great jigged bone and a cool shield would be even more fun. I could even like it in stainless.

I like looking at Whalers/Toenails/Sunfish knives, but it's hard to imagine EDCing one. They are very broad! How about an elephant on a diet??

I keep going back and looking at this whittler (the bottom knife), and thinking, it'd make a great single-spring two-blade, (to wit, a half whit!):D

Sounds good!

Would that mean a wharncliffe main blade?

(Beautiful knives by the way :))

Pleading guilty to a persistent streak of purism, my vote would go for Clip or Spear in that order, Bear!

A sleeveboard knife like that has nice round bolsters for pocketing.

Now that is getting me excited! Sheep or coping secondary....some old school peach seed jigging and an old school shield.

Oh man.........oh man......oh man!!!

I like the direction you are going with this Charlie! What would you think of dressing the bolsters up with dimples and/or making them slanted? I'd love to see a main with a long pull, maybe a match striker.

I could get behind that Charlie. I'd like a long pull spear main and a coping secondary. Grooves on the bolsters? Some great peachseed jigging.... like an old Schrade?

I had a goofball brainwave this morning whilst brushing my teeth: What about an office knife?

Now, I have since discovered that my memory was playing tricks on me, and the old Schrade office knife I had in mind was actually a spear and a spey, so the idea has lost some of its lustre. But! My original thought was: #68 frame, which has been done as a stockman previously, with just the sheepsfoot and spey blades on one spring. So the tooling already exists, mostly. You could build it as a shadow pattern in white smooth bone or some kind of synthetic done up like "french ivory" (celluloid) if there's such to be had.

It would be a good size, light, affordable, and like nothing you can get today.

Maybe we can go on a sleeveboard search, and see what bolsters/shield/blade one usually sees on these?
Anyone got one?

Ah, I thought a wharncliffe was typical on half whittlers but clip or spear is infinitely preferable - clip and pen or clip and coping would be ace!

Any chance of that patina too :D

Great posts. I like the idea of single or double blades, super. I have never been a real fan of jigged bone knives myself. However, the new thing I started seeing in customs over the last year was Kirinite. Maybe use a more modern scale material to better mark a moment in time. Match materials to the state of the world at that time seems more significant to me than producing a knife that everyone knows with a different logo or box. As a knife community I like to see these as chances to display a moment in time. My two cents, hopefully I can get one when they are released.
