2015 Forum Knife - It's Never Too Early To Think About the Next Blade Forum Knife

How about a GEC 38 whittler with a wharnie main blade?

Another good idea!

I suggested earlier the 38 as a stockman/punch platform of some kind. I think the 38 would be a great frame with a number of different blade combos.

Yeah, not sure I've ever heard a restriction based on closed length. Seems silly of there are some.

If his workplace is like mine, closed length is immaterial. It is the blade that matters.

My workplace effectively has a limit on closed length.
2" max blade length
4 1/2" max opened length.

trust an engineering company to write a spec for the silly issue.

Single-Spring Two blades??? Cloud Nine here!

Here's a Rem Dream:D

And this silver lining has indeed a cloud shield, a more modern and burlier Sleeveboard

I have been wavering between a 79 or an 81 in blackwood for 3 weeks now! They are complete opposites in terms of profile but seem equally worth my time. Please tell me more about your 79. How does it feel in the hand or pocket?

Dr M I'm really pleased with the 79 and it sees a lot of use so it's not just a pretty face. Very good to excellent in the hand, the broad tapering handle allows a comfortable grip, the thumb can rest very nicely on the bolster itself. The Spear master is a credible slicer and is up for tasks such as preparing kindlig shavings/fuzz sticks. Having a Coping secondary is a useful pairing. The spring is pretty tough so it's not for fans of the weak pull-but on a single-spring 2 blade knife a soft pull would be a bad idea in my view. Not heavy in the pocket either and easy to get hold of due to the Sleeveboard shape, would be better with sunk-joints (all knives are!) As for the 81, don't know I got a Blackwood 82 Dixie and that's sleek!

Sorry for the slight thread drift but enthusiasm you know..:D:thumbup:

Thanks, Will

Will, that Remington is killer. Slim sleeveboard, nice swedge, great color and jigging, tip bolsters...sunk joints?

bill2000 Many thanks, it's a nice old gent I must say and you guessed correctly, sunk joints, the pocket's choice!

Regards, Will

I like looking at Whalers/Toenails/Sunfish knives, but it's hard to imagine EDCing one. They are very broad! How about an elephant on a diet??

I keep going back and looking at this whittler (the bottom knife), and thinking, it'd make a great single-spring two-blade, (to wit, a half whit!):D

This 52 page thread meanders more than the whole of the Mississippi river

Are we close to anywhere?
Please

Charlie has floated idea of a two blade, one spring sleeve board or to a lesser extent equal end knife. There have been no serious objections, so I imagine we will see something like that on the poll.

Sorry if the information is slow in coming! The Case executive I have to talk to is still traveling. I may not speak to him before the Oregon show this weekend coming.
True to form, Canal street has offered an actual prototype!
They do beautiful work, but are less flexible than GEC (who do a lot of in-house engineering) I asked them to propose a knife, suggesting that a single spring two-blade might be the ticket, along with our under $100 final cost requirement.
Here it is!

A little different, and pretty nice!!
I believe they will offer stainless or carbon, and I don't know the wood yet.

WOW I really like that Canal Street!! That has Eric written all over it. ;) What is the closed length on that one Charlie? I would be more than happy with that knife with some nice 1095 blade steel.

Nice knife Charlie, Canal Street have done well there
