2015 Forum Knife - It's Never Too Early To Think About the Next Blade Forum Knife

Very attractive knife. That wood is very appealing. Seeing it with bolsters will be interesting. I would not care for extra long bolsters, tipped might be cool. I've never considered a CSC knife with the big gold coin shields. I'd like a shield, but would like one that is thinner, and nickel silver.

I'd like to see a sleeveboard with bone scales as well. I like the CS design a bunch, but done in black ebony and the addition of tip bolsters and sunk joints would really make it sing. Given the birds-eye pins I don't think there's room for regular bolsters anyhow.

GEC is a great company and I own many of their knives. Unless we want them to become the only option remaining, I think we need to finally thank Canal Street for sticking with us, and to give them some visibility and business.

I know many people feel this way but I would counter with this,
when GEC was our only option in 2012 (and they knew it) we were still able to submit our specs to them and they built our knife the way we wanted it. A knife they did not currently offer.
If anyone 'stuck with us' it was GEC.
No doubt they benefit from being the 'it' knife right now, but they have earned that.

IMNSHO I don't think we owe either company anything, they build knives for profit, not charity.
We stand to offer a manufacturer a very, very nice pre-paid SFO. The marketing exposure the chosen manufacturer will get in this sub forum alone, (I would think) offers considerable value for their brand.

I hope we get offers from 4 or more manufacturers (not holding my breath, just dreaming), and I hope the company with the best offer gets the prize.
It shouldn't be anybody's turn.

If it's not going to be a Punch!Nut..... that one looks nice. I would prefer the nick on the sheepsfoot on the other side if that would drop it a bit lower, but other than that, I'm in.

We should keep in mind that Canal Street (and other makers other than GEC) may not continue to make prototypes for us forever. I have been pleased with every GEC I've had, but I feel kind of bad that we aren't spreading the love around.

We posted at the same time, and you make a great point.

This is how I feel. I do appreciate CSC.

If we want to support CSC, we should buy more CSC knives in general..... and carry/post up about them. The half moon trapper is a sweet little knife.

I haven't checked in on this thread in a while, and boy have I been missing out. I'd buy that CSC today as it sits!! I love the wooden shadow pattern with the birdseyes. Very different than anything I've seen from a recent production knife. Since this is the wish-list thread I'd throw in that I'd prefer 1095 and I'd be interested to see it in Osage Orange, but if it comes out exactly like the prototype I'd be in for sure. I've been wanting a CSC, but I'm not a stainless fan and I haven't been able to find any of their knives in carbon that I'm interested in, so this in 1095 would be a win-win-win. That being said, the pattern is cool enough to buy even if it's the 440C. Great job CSC!!

That's a really nice knife! I think the secondary nail nick should be on the other side and the joint thus sunken lower, I just don't even see that as a question, as is it looks uncomfortable to use. Other than that, it's a beaut. Love the shape of the clip, sheepsfoot is good other than the already mentioned. I do dig the idea of micarta, a nice natural would be my preference, but I'd buy 1 in wood as shown no problem. Tip bolsters or not? I could go either way, we haven't done a shadow yet I don't think. Either steel is good for me although I've got a weakness for 1095, but I'm good either way.

All that said, I would like to see what other offers we get even if it's just to see who else is in the game. GEC has been good to us and I'd like to see what their take is. They have to have their game on to beat this though, CS did good! Great work and a knife I'd be happy with.

Jon

I'm excited to see who else steps up to offer patterns this year. They're going to have some stiff competition with that CSC.

This thread makes me wonder how many cs knives aren't bought solely because of the shield. I don't love it, but I would take it over the etching all over the blade on queen and GEC knives. Not sure why they want to write all over a beautiful knife.

Etching comes off with use or polish. Shields that are not pinned also have a nasty habit of coming off........

Although Eric did say he is pushing for old school pinned shields!

And looking at my collection I guess I don't mind round/button shields! At least they aren't the cloud shield I personslly wish GEC would use less on the woods I love!!

^^^ we are still waiting:) From my understanding, we might possibly get another prototype from CS. Also, I assume (but I know where that gets you) that will will get a bid from other makers such as GEC.

Excuse me but.....

Stuck with us or stuck it to us?
For years we paid GEC set up costs on our knives and then they marketed the very same pattern
So we do not own them much........

How bout we just wait for all the prototypes/bids and then pick the best one that the most people vote on in a poll rather than debating the subjective merits of the various companies? Seems pointless and tarnishes the whole process in my opinion.

It's a professional bidding process, to the one with the most to offer go the contract. I don't feel that it's a case of owing anybody anything nor is it a case of anybody sticking it to us. We ask, whomever stepped up to the plate beat got the contract. Why wouldn't GEC continue to market a pattern they are set up for, if it makes sense to them? We still got what we wanted. We don't owe them anything beyond consideration for this years knife for that though. Nor do we owe CSC anything because last year they submitted a design. We chose not to buy it, they made it anyways and people were happy with it. I personally don't get either the "GEC because of the past" or "CSC because we owe them for not choosing them last year". Outside of personal considerations due to past quality history, why not just focus on the knives rather than some kind of brand loyalty.
