2015 Forum Knife - It's Never Too Early To Think About the Next Blade Forum Knife

How bout we just wait for all the prototypes/bids and then pick the best one that the most people vote on in a poll rather than debating the subjective merits of the various companies? Seems pointless and tarnishes the whole process in my opinion.

Agreed.

This.

Excuse me but.....

Stuck with us or stuck it to us?
For years we paid GEC set up costs on our knives and then they marketed the very same pattern
So we do not own them much........

The 2013 hasn't been marketed again.... (I wish they would). They also have not offered the same exact knife in their own catalog.

To say GEC has stuck it to us really not called for. They have built us a special short order knife we wanted for a price that really wasn't much more than a production knife.

I don't think we owe anyone anything, but nobody stuck it to us.

^^ THIS! ^^
We came to them with hat in hand asking for a special run of knives that met our specs and price point. I would call that working with, as opposed to sticking to.
The above is only my two cents.

OK by me. So no more discussion, good or bad, about the manufacturers?

I would prefer we be allowed to respectfully debate every aspect without getting personal or insulting to the folks volunteering to steer the ship this year. It's a fine line between debating the knife and the company that made it, but I will do my best not to cross it.

A couple of folks are pushing the limit. Gary and I both asked you to just talk about the knives.

I enjoy following the process of choosing our knife every year! This is my forth one and from what I have seen so far it will be the closest yet to my personal choice:)

If you want to talk about typical fit and finish which could be expected from a company, that's one thing. It's quite another to say one company or another did wrong by us or that we owe them or they owe us.

Only the former team members know all the ins and outs of what went into the pricing of former knives. As someone who has been involved in the last three knives, I will say that all companies have bent over backwards to provide the knife we wanted. And I don't believe we have ever been charged for tooling.

I absolutely love that canal street except for the shield, with the big round silver end pins it also needs to be silver or the end pins need to be copper. Other than that sign me up for two.

Fair enough, thank you Frank. :)

Erm, not to be rude or interrupt, but could anybody fill me in on how the forum knife deal works? Didn't find anything on the first page and I'm a newbie. Also will it be available for international members?

Also for what it is worth, a small wharnie slicer fixed or folder would be my choice.

The forum knife is a group effort by members. When the decision is made on what knife will be made and costs are finalized, I will take orders on my web site and handle all payments and shipping.

At some point we will probably do a poll like last year, but nothing is settled as of now. I can assure you that it will be a spectacular product at a very fair price as no profits are made by members involved.

Still holdin' for the sleeveboard!!! C'mon sleeveboard double end jack!!!!! ;)

Just keep your eyes on this thread. The knife is open to all--you don't have to be a member or even post. When the details are finalized (weeks? months?), there will be an announcement and a sign-up thread. We're all in the same boat and there is no "inside track". We just wait here for announcements.

I'm with you Barry!! :thumbup::thumbup:

Sorry if the information is slow in coming! The Case executive I have to talk to is still traveling. I may not speak to him before the Oregon show this weekend coming.
True to form, Canal street has offered an actual prototype!
They do beautiful work, but are less flexible than GEC (who do a lot of in-house engineering) I asked them to propose a knife, suggesting that a single spring two-blade might be the ticket, along with our under $100 final cost requirement.
Here it is!

A little different, and pretty nice!!
I believe they will offer stainless or carbon, and I don't know the wood yet.

Hey folks! A few specs on that Canal Street knife:

- 4" closed
- That's bocote wood on the proto, could do cocobola as well, maybe makassar ebony. I wouldn't recommend chestnut on a shadow, it's too soft.
- I need to do a little convincing with the powers that be regarding the shield, but I'm shooting for old school through pinned.
- Steel will have to be either 440C or 1095
- Blade choices are what you see, I believe the nail mark on the sheepfoot can be put on the opposite side without any trouble if that's what the majority wants.

Eric
That CS offering looks very good. If they could get the sheepsfoot blade to sit a little lower & sink the joints it would be really elegant and very pocket friendly.
Single spring -two blades, slim & trim.

I like this one a lot actually. I like the frame, blade selection, shadow frame, and it being a pen. I like the bocote too. The only thing would be a lower sheepsfoot which I thing could be done by moving the nail nick to the otherside which looks very possible.

I still have a kinda beat up CSC Stockman that I can take pictures with other knives if anyone wants. I got this one used in 2010. I don't really use stock knives too much but this is the one that I have next to my pc.
