2015 Forum Knife - It's Never Too Early To Think About the Next Blade Forum Knife

Thanks Jake, and I agree that it would make a terrific forum knife and a versatile pattern for GEC. That $18 per dozen price point is fairly attractive too. :)

That is a great looking collection of stunning single spring knives! I would be happy with a modern version of any of those:)

That rigger's knife is an interesting idea, because Case may be the only company that could possibly make one in our budget since they already have the pattern. So if we ever want one, now might be the time.

Could always get really fancy and do a rough rider marlin spike. Could probably do a gold inlay and mammoth and still stay in budget :)

Wow Charlie,

Those are some amazing looking knives. I really hope those first 5 are what you are working towards.

I have a pretty decent collection of single-springs and that very few display blade-rub. Certainly not of the type that impedes closing so I don't see any inevitability in blade-rub on these patterns. It depends how well they're constructed in the first place, expensive or low cost.

That's my experience too Will. I have a lot of Sheffield-made penknives, and I don't think any of them have blade-rub.

It is very possible for a single spring pen to be very thin yet have no blade rub. I am not confident it can easily be done by any of today's production companies. At least not without a premium.

Bearing in mind, the regularity with which this issue comes up, with blade-rub often being excused as inevitable on a single-spring knife, this is of some concern to me. For me, a new knife with blade-rub is a knife that's not been made properly.

Very true Jack. It's the quality and care of construction that's vital to a single-spring two blade pattern. I've heard some people claim that you can't expect much snap from a single-spring two blade knife either, especially if it's a small one. This is absolute myth and an apology for incompetence.

Thanks, Will

This pattern is my favorite single spring knife...and probably my favorite knife in general. It has a single spring with a catch bit. It was in the running for the 2012 BF traditional knife but didn't win the final vote. I would LOVE for GEC to reproduce this pattern EXACTLY like the original with one exception. I'd like the 2ndary blade to be a sheeps foot. The "sowbelly shield" is a must! It's hard to believe but no modern knife company has put the "sowbelly shield" or "barbie shield" on a sowbelly knife. And no modern knife company has made a 2-blade single spring sowbelly!

I've always liked that proposal a lot.

I'd venture that GEC's 82 Dixie frame could be put to use for this, it has a nice Sheepcliffe blade too. But as you say, a conventional Sheepfoot on this would make it orbital. GEC also has some corset style shields they've used on Tidioutes, very tidy!

Thanks, Will

Seeing Jake's old Remington has me very excited for a single spring, 2 blade knife. And that sowbelly would be perfect, especially with those bolsters and that shield! I would buy three if we could get a company to make it. Great contribution to the discussion, Jake! I hope we keep your single spring sowbelly on the list!

One more thumbs up for that single spring sowbelly! That is a mighty fine lookin knife!

I agree! That's a very nice total package. Most spearpoints are too blunt, that blade is great.

Charlie, have to ask.....what pattern is that Coke bottle shaped Shrade second down in this pic? That looks mighty nice.

From the 1936 Schrade Cut Co catalog:

That's a good one with the Zulu spear.
