2015 Forum Knife - It's Never Too Early To Think About the Next Blade Forum Knife

I throw in my hat for Micarta, if the CSC pattern is chosen. A shadow with micarta evokes a lot of what I like from a lot of custom makers these days...Bose, Oeser, Menefee, etc. and is a pretty difficult setup to find on a production knife these days. No, it's not exactly a bone or stag jack with iron bolsters, but the forum knife hasn't always been geared toward purity of tradition. If the CSC sample is chosen this would also be my first knife from that company, and I do love broadening my horizons!

Interesting point, but I still like the wood that is on the prototype!

A smooth dyed camel bone would be nice and different in the line of the BF knives.

While I did advocate for micarta with the 2013 Congress Jack, I am not hoping for a repeat so soon.

Scale materials to date:
Stag (4)
Jigged Bone (2)
Ebony (1)
Micarta (1)
Mammoth Ivory (1)

Stag is over-repesented in this series. Bone and ivory are too fragile for a shadow pattern (in my opinion). My vote would be for micarta but I could accept wood.

I'm with Bozack. If wood wins out over Micarta, it would be nice to see something a little different from Ebony and Blackwood. Osage Orange would be awesome. Bloodwood is really nice. That Brazilian Rosewood that showed up on a few TC Barlows last November was really cool.

J_Curd, I was one of those Amens you heard when you wrote, "Micarta will be the 'classic' material of our generation.":)

Oh, and thanks for the B-52s there, rbmcmjr. Took me right back to high school, then reminded me that I'm old now and so are the B-52s. :o Then I googled your signature line. :D

I'm still in favour of wood if we go with Eric's pattern, but I think it would be better to decide on the pattern before the cover material. Nothing wrong with a good discussion though :)

Something different and yet tough. As I say, I like the micarta option too, especially polished natural. Bone is too fragile for a long life as a Shadow. Some have asked after Tip-Bolsters, a very beautiful touch on small patterns but I can't see it working with those Bird's Eye pivots. Anyway, the Bird's Eyes are what give a lot of appeal to a Shadow.

Here's some Natural Micarta grain:

What is significant is the deafening silence from other potential bidders, May is almost upon us. Maybe they're intimidated by the CS prototype....:D

Thanks, Will

I agree that a pattern and manufacturer should be chosen before a decision is made of wood vs micarta.

We still don't have anything from GEC. With them, I would suggest a single spear or sheepfoot with a long pull on the new #38 frame along with that pick bone they did on the Farmer Jacks, finished off with the unXld diamond shield.

Imagine one of these with a single spear or sheepfoot. I believe they could make the blade a bit longer as well.

My second choice from them would be a #15, but do a Northfield version with pinched/lined bolsters. Single spear or sheep with long pulls. Again, use that pick bone with the unXld diamond shield. A Northfield version would really set this one apart.

I'm liking your thinking sir  Though I'd still like to see a sheepsfoot with a long pull on a #71 frame ;)

Yes we had chocolate moose

:D

Just curious, when did previous years get decided on and eventually shipped?

...this is a long and winding road :)
IMHO Eric made us a perfect prototype - thank you very much! I'd be perfectly happy with it and wouldn't change a thing on it

I know that resizing a design pretty much involves going back to the drawing board, but shortening up the CSC knife would make it way more pocketable. That being said, as far as 4-inch knives go, it looks as pocketable as it gets. I enjoy that the forum knife differs every year - it "forces" me to use and enjoy patterns that i wouldn't normally buy.

Here's food for thought: what came first, machine-jigged bone handles or micarta handles. I'm thinking they probably arrived on the scene at about the same time.
