2015 Forum Knife - It's Never Too Early To Think About the Next Blade Forum Knife

Since the GEC #15 seems to be such a popular pattern and the favorite of so many, how about a #15 with a threaded bolster (not barlow) and a shield (maybe a diamond, or something else to keep it different from Charlie's creations), single longpull spear or clip point, in african blackwood or gabon ebony? Keeping it simple with a knife like that, I think, will have staying power over time.

I suggested making a #15 Northfield edition a while back.... pinched/lined bolsters & end caps, embossed diamond shield..... I think it would be a winner. I vote for sheepfoot or spear.

I like that thought Al. My guess is that GEC might propose something on the new #38 frame? Or possibly something else that's coming up in production runs to keep it simpler on their part.

The #15 frame is probably one of the most popular designs in their lineup, so I agree that anything in that pattern would be a winner with many here.

The 15 is one of their major patterns and they seem to do at least 2 runs per year of them.... I don't think it would take too much to make a Northfield version..... they could do a standard run, a barlow run and a BF run just like with the 77 last year. I'd be happy with a 38 too. It's a great frame.

The Diamond Shield at GEC IS Charlie's creation. And I believe his exclusively, at least with GEC.

Yeah, I think Charlie mentioned something like 5 TC runs this year, which would mean a run of 15's are always imminent. You may be right though, if the proposal were left up to GEC rather than a request, then they may want to use a newer pattern?

....(not barlow) and a shield...

Duh! I guess that goes without saying that a knife with a shield would not be a Barlow. I just wanted to make sure to clarify that I wasn't throwing ideas out copying Charlie's creations

I like your idea, sugarleaf. But I'm really liking the 2 blade single spring idea too. And I am firmly on the side of something a little more exotic than Ebony/Blackwood. Still, there is something to be said for simplicity and affordability...

I wouldn't mind seeing something more exotic either, but what's you definition of exotic? I would love to see some burl wood, like an amboyna or dyed box elder, but I don't really see that as a reality. Do you classify something like Cocobolo as exotic? If that's the case, I would rather stick to a Blackwood or Gabon, which I think would make the shield pop better. If a wood were used that had more figuring/defined grains, I would almost vote for no shield, as to not take away from focus of the beauty in the wood.

I really like the looks of this bocote:

...The problem is though, I've seen bocote from the same batch of knives that I didn't like. Same goes for other batches of knives from GEC, as well as other manufacturers. The so-called exotic (non-burl) woods really do not have much consistency. If you get a good one, you get a REALLY good one, and then there are some that are just, meh. Blackwood may not be exotic, but I know that I would like the look of it with a shield. There's something to be said for consistency...

BTW Scott, I just put two and two together and pieced together who you are on IG, LOL. Check your follow requests...

The other issue when you start considering exotic materials is pricing. Where we need it to be at a given price point, that may preclude the use of exotic materials.

sugarleaf: the knife you used to illustrate Bocote raises in interesting question concerning a forum fixed-blade traditional. The main argument AGAINST commissioning a fixed blade knife is that they are expensive to ship. They are usually longer than folding knives and require more expensive packaging and shipping.

The knife you showed here, however, has an OAL of just 4". That means it could ship in the same tube and USPS box that most folders do. It would also carry as lightly and discretely as a 4" Stockman--probably easier because it is thinner.

I really do prefer the CSC design and would take it as is. I guess I'm just floating this as an idea for NEXT year's knife--we've never had a BFC fixed-blade knife.

Bark river city knife seems popular. Has anyone ever floated this idea by them?

The City knife is a popular design, but at 6-1/8" breaks the packaging barrier and makes shipping expensive, especially for our international forum members.

If we're talking fixed blade knives, I think some thought needs to be sent towards Don Cowles' production piece that he sells through his site. It's right around 5- 5.5" overall, IIRC. It's a beauty of a piece. Not sure on the logistics of producing 150-200 pieces, though!

Dang! When I read fixed blade, the City Knife is exactly what I thought of first. I think it's a bit out of the budget range as well.

I think I have mentioned a time or two that I would like to see a small necker style fixed blade. The Bark River knife posted would make a really nice neck or pocketable knife for the forum. :)

Dang, my secret trolling identity is discovered!

By "exotic," I just meant something like Bloodwood or Osage Orange or Snakewood...

A forum City Knife from Bark River would be super! Maybe by 2016 we can work out the postage and shipping issues.

I LOVE the look of wood, especially for a safe queen. But if it gets used, I like a polished micarta. Maybe I just don't have enough yet, but my absolute favorite is still stag. But at this point in time, I'm going to be happy if I'm able just score a forum knife of any style or configuration. So many options have been thrown out in this thread, I'm both excited and confused at the same time.

About how late in the year do things get nailed down and allow individuals to secure a position? Even though my wife has me on a knife buying moratorium, I'm stoked for this one!
