2015 Forum Knife - It's Never Too Early To Think About the Next Blade Forum Knife

While I like Micarta on a knife, I just really like the look of that particular wood as well as the rest of the knife. It is distinctive as designed.

I would still go for it if Micarta, just prefer the wood.

I feel like I should say, that while I like micarta, and think it would be appropriate, I would prefer the wood handles. This will be my first forum knife, and I am personally quite partial to wood scales on knives. My EDC is actually a wood scaled Lonewolf T2. Wood is my preference, unless the knife is going to be put into heavy use. I would prefer the wood for carrying around and regular use. I have heavy duty knives, but I'm more looking for something classroom appropriate.

So in summary, I like the wood. I'm fine with micarta or bone or antler, but wood would be my preference.

Just a thought. Micarta may be durable but reminds me of Formica, same pattern & look no matter what part of the sheet you look at.
Do you really want your knife to look exactly like every other one or have the individual characteristics of the wood with no two exactly alike?
Last years knife with the Stag covers gave everyone that purchased one individual identity. Wood can accomplish this synthetics won't.

I have wood-handled knives that are over a hundred years old, and have been used real hard in their times. The wood has held up just fine. I'm not sure when it gained a reputation as a flimsy material for the covers of a pocket knife

Have we had a wood-handled Forum knife yet?

Although not opposed to Micarta, I think I'd like wood this time around. Dark ebony, or maybe some highly figured iron-wood.

Shadow pattern: Sure, why not!

Correct me if I'm wrong. I believe the 2010 forum knife was a Ebony Moose.

This shadow pattern is growing on me. I think it should stay wood. While micarta may be stronger, I think a highly figured wood does this knife justice and any reasonable use for the knife makes difference in strength a moot point. Does this one really have to be a heavy duty beater? I know we all have one or two designated for the nasty work.

Someone mentioned tip bolsters a few pages back. I don't know how well they'd fit this knife, but I really like the idea of them. I don't see those very often and I don't know of any manufacturer's currently offering knives with them.

oldtymer, you need to add a few Micarta handled knives to your collection! ;) I own multiple knives made of canvas Micarta, linen Micarta, and paper Micarta. No two look alike. You can use the same Micarta on two different knives and get very different patterns. Like wood, Micarta has grain and texture that come out differently on every piece. It is the unique appearance of different Micarta handles that is part of its appeal. The texture and grain look different on every one, even if you are looking at a hundred of the same knife. It's just more subtle than wood or stag. Some folks like to sand the handles rough to bring out the texture and the grain. Others like to polish them smooth so the texture/grain is less obvious. It is a very rare Micarta that comes out looking "synthetic". The 2013 forum knife came out looking a little like acrylic because it was a fine white paper Micarta, but that is the exception to the rule.

LOL! :D

I used a resin-bonded wood laminate for the scales of this fixed-blade, I reckon it'd whup linen or cloth Micarta good! ;) :D

"Resin-bonded wood laminate." Would that be plywood? ;) Whatever, that's a good lookin' knife!

I like Micarta. Heck, I also like wood. The final handle covers don't matter to me as much as the pattern and blades. I just wanted to speak up for Micarta in the hope that more folks will get into it.

And to think . . . I brought up micarta several pages back and was crucified for it! "Not traditional", was said! Oh well, whatever. I'd like micarta handles to, but I'm equally fine with the wood. We just had stag last year, so I'd prefer no bone this year! Viva micarta or wood!!

I agree eith SA Condor. I've gotten a bit tired if stag in general lately.

I love tip-bolsters, and think they look really classy on a penknife, but this is a pretty big knife

 Scott, did you really HAVE to make me spit tea all over my PC screeen??!!!! ;) :D

My tongue is firmly in cheek. LOL, Jack! Please don't ever take me too seriously. Your handles actually sound like Micarta made with wood instead of fabric or paper!

That's more or less it Scott, but don't tell anyone ;) The stuff was so tough we ground chisels out of it!

A hardwood is well...Hard.

This will be my first BF forum knife and it will be special and I would like to say < Got Wood.

Yes to wood. But not Ebony. I would like to see something more exotic, and not so often used. Maybe Purple Heart wood or spalted maple.

Micarta has turned into quite the topic. My good pal Andy (mqqn) and I were discussing the same last summer and I felt he opined accurately, "Micarta will be the 'classic' material of our generation".
