2015 Forum Knife Photos

I hardly ever venture into this neighborhood but I read all the posts and enjoyed all the photos. It looks like a really nice knife and I wish I had come in early enough to participate. To that end, if any one of you happens to be disappointed enough with your knife to offer it up for sale, you'll find my contact information at the bottom of this post.

I have no pics, but am incredibly impressed with the knife. Love the blade combination. Love the blade steel. Came usably sharp. Responded well to the Sharpmaker at 15° per side. No edge angle adjustment necessary. Is now "scary sharp".

Because of the wood, shadow pattern and two blade design, it is light. Between the lightness and the two blade design, it carries like a smaller knife.

Like many new knives, the action was a tad rough the first few times I opened it, but, with a drop of oil and a bit of working, it is now smooth as the proverbial derriere. The spring strength was likely a 4, just as I like it to be.

The finishing on the pins and shield is outstanding with everything exactly flush. I don't know what finishing process was used on the wood, but it's smooth and shiny, yet textured, a delight to the fingers.

In short, I'm a happy camper. This knife is excellent and will see much pocket time. Thanks to Charlie and Barry. And my appreciation and well wishes to Canal Street.

These all look gorgeous! I keep missing the boat on the offering of the year (still kicking myself for missing 2011 specifically). I'm keeping an eagle eye out for the 2016, it'll be my 5 year anniversary on this forum!

Anyone have any size comparison photos? Maybe next to a slimline trapper or stockman? Just curious as I wait for mine to arrive. Just snagged one off the exchange. Could not take it any longer. Lol.

Ah man! I had a small package notice in my mailbox today. I eagerly went to the window only to find that it was not my 2015 knife! Hopefully it'll be here soon :)

Here’s a comparison with a Northwoods Hawthorne jack (which is built on the GEC 48 frame).

Added the ruler to show that, despite the apparent difference caused by the perspective, the two are very close to the same length.

I have taken a few bad photos, but I can not upload them at the moment. The ForumKnife is (closed) some 1/8" longer than GEC #38 Gringling Whittler. The main blade is exactly as long as the one on Gringling Whittler. The grinds are however different - the Forum Knife seems to have flat grind, while the GEC has a convex one.

What I really like about the ForumKnife is its weight - my scales showed 53g - that is just 1.85oz. Compared to that the Northwoods Willamette Whittler weights 62g (2.2 oz) and GEC Grinling Whittler 83g (2.9oz). The Knife because of its thin handle does not sit in had quite as well as the Willamette, but still feel very nice. I find the size just right for a general purpose knife - the combination of blades is very practical (even if I would prefer wharncliffe instead of sheepsfoot for more pointy tip, but I am just getting picky here).

I really like the shape of the main blade - compared to most other traditional slipjoint knives with clip-point blade, the blade does not have that "abrupt" curvature change of the belly towards the tip, but rather a more continuous curve which allows for more pointy tip and IMO better usability when slicing.

Thanks for the comparison shots and information. I have a 48 so that helps to get an idea. Love the large blade/light weight concept of this one.

This is the most unusual covers of this years forum knife that I received. But all of the knives I bought are of excellent quality!
I am VERY pleased with this years collective effort. Eric did an excellent job on these, just to bad this is the final offering from Canal Street.

As I looked at the Bocote covers, I realized how the grain pattern and coloration was everything I could ask for in this wood or really, any wood. Even though my knife was sent out in the first batch, I just now thought maybe I should post my mediocre pics in with all the other fine photos.
I had a chip where the blade hit the back spring but sharpened it out. I’m a bit paranoid that maybe the blade will still hit the back spring so I won’t let it snap shut just in case.

Heres a pic of my two. The top one is going to my grandpa for Christmas.
I was originally hoping for wild color variations in the wood, but am very pleased with what I received.
Both main blades have an ever-so-slight recurve. And the secondary blade on the bottom knife doesn't 'snap' closed.

My grandpa is just as much a knife knut as I am, so I cant give him the knife with the imperfect second blade.
It doesn't matter to me either way because my knife will get used. :D

I am very happy with both knives.

I am also happy to have been a part of this, and I would like to give a big THANKYOU to all involved!
Merry Christmas!

Used mine tonight while installing new blinds in our windows. Great user. Pulls are a 3 with little snap but very smooth. I really like the pattern and the 'authentic' feel of it. Nothing on the knife screams of mass production.. Few more pics...

Didn't really get the grain I was hoping for, and there seems to be a lot of grey in it. However, my clip blade has little to no recurve, and both blades came extremely sharp. They are spaced well in the frame, with little rubbing. My shield is nice, and it has good opening. I'll clean and lube it, and I think the snap will be great then. The clip point sits pretty much right at the edge of the liners, which is something that really bothers me. The nail nick on the clip could also be easier to access. If I decide to keep it I'll probably drop the point and put in a little opening for the clip nail nick.

Overall, it's a very nice knife. Even though the grain isn't exactly how I hoped, it's a very nice looking knife. It's also very light. A great blade combination, with good ergos with either blade open.

Thanks to everyone involved! I know it's a big undertaking.

To everyone who has contributed, from beginning to end, a huge thank-you. I am so grateful for these two unique and beautifully crafted knives that are my first chosen traditional folders. They brought the snow with them and it hasn't stopped since they arrived.
