2015, the snarkiest year yet!

O

Kinda looks like a knock-off of a Dunhill. They go for about $800 but you can find some cheaper models for around $400.

I have seen a bunch of the Dunhills, nice, but way too pricey for me LOL.... $100 is more than id want to spend honestly...But 300+ is more than i COULD spend LOL

Doc having issues with his Old Boy is almost the only issue i can find online. Now i have read others having an issue, but they send it in and if they had it less than 2 years they got it repaired or replaced for free and after 2 years was only 8-9 bucks to be repaired or replaced... And everyone that i read that got a new one said it worked flawlessly. I have read people complain about the price, or the fact the warranty is only 2 years, but besides for Doc i havent found any complaints about the lighter functioning that wasnt easily fixed by the company.

I wish i could find more negative reviews... It would make me want one less..... As it stands i have an all black Old boy, some IM corona replacement flints and some Vector Quintuple Refined Butane Gas in a shopping cart... All said and done with shipping the total would be 135.04..... That price has kept me from hitting the submit payment button though LMAO But i keep the tab open.... Its a battle and only time will tell who wins.

WW - look at it this way -
Price - How many matches can you buy for $100 plus however much for the fuel to run it?
Persistentcy - Matches have been in use for a lot longer than fancy lighters so they have all the bugs worked out of them.
Reliability - Matches work all the time and never run out of fuel. Can be made waterproof (with the appropriate wax coatings).
Purty dang fool proof - NOT sailor or soldier proof. Nothing is. BUT they work just about all the time except for severe user error.

So my recommendation is transition over to matches and forget about that over-priced new-fangled contraptionof a lighter.

All night if you can. It's prolly one of the best shows on network tv. I can't wait for the new (final?) season to start.

I've NEVER had a issue with a .79¢ BIC. :o

Hey WW,
People spend 15000 on a watch that tells time just the same as a 15 dollar digital. What you spend your money on is really about what makes you happy or what you need. If you want a 100 dollar lighter, I say go for it, if you have the disposable funds.

HAHA!!

I have a Hate Hate relationship with matches. I love how they smell... But dislike everything else about them LOL

I grew up in the woods. Where i couldnt just go to a store at the drop of a dime. There has been more than once that matches have left me without fire and without a good smoke. In fact i can clearly remember using a magnifying glass to light a smoke once when matches failed. And have you ever had to light a smoke with a ferro rod or batteries? I have been there. Not as quick and easy as a lighter i tell ya what LOL Even when they work flawlessly, you can go through several matches smoking one bowl... Hell i have went through a pack of matches smoking one bowl before LOL

I've NEVER had a issue with a .79¢ BIC. :o

Easy, cheap, and reliable. I have not had many issues with Bics either. However they range from 1.25-1.50 a piece here and i go through 1 every week or 2 max. I never lose my lighters, if i did i wouldnt be thinking about a top of the line lighter, i just use them a lot and they run out of fluid. The Old Boys have a big tank that holds a lot of fluid from what im reading though, another plus.

I hate tossing Bics. In fact id bet a Becker that if i wanted i could find over 20-30 empty Bics around here right now. Your paying for the mechanical and plastic parts, the parts you throw away, not the fluid, the part you use. Id much rather pay once for the actual lighter and then only have to pay for the part/fluid i use.

WW maybe you can strike a trade with some hex hawks :D

I love bartering. Id be all for a trade, but finding someone with an Old boy in good shape, that they want to part with, thats also into sharp things, may be a challenge LOL

Well said. Thanks for being my voice of reason........... And my wife's worse enemy LOLOLOL

I made some extra funds doing a little stonewashing and sharpening for a couple guys.. I have the funds for the lighter..... Its just trying to justify spending that much on the lighter. I could get a knife, hell i could get a couple knives for the price of the lighter/fluid/extra flints.....But my rebuttal to that is i honestly use a lighter more often than a knife even.... I pay top dollar for some of my knives that only get used once in a blue moon.... Paying top dollar for a lighter ill use every single day more than once doesnt seem like that bad of investment when i think it out... Using the evil side of my brain anyways LOL

Gun show in 60. Gonna take $800, I don't plan on spending that much but just maybe there's something I just gotta have. Or maybe a lot of somethings.

make us proud.

Wood,

I bought mine for the exact same reasons that you did. It is touted as the best pipe lighter ever. BUT, you say you never see any bad reviews about them, and that I am the only person that you have heard from or read that has had a bad experience with them. Well, if you want to see more negative things, peruse the pipe forums. Its all there.

I didn't believe the negative hype and spent 135 on mine. Waste of 135. It works, and is built like a tank, and it looks cool. But it doesn't work well. It fails to spark enough to light the gas most of the time, and goes out just breathing around it. Go look on some of the bigger pipe forums and research it and you'll find a bunch of suckers like me that bought one and found the same thing.

Now if you sit in your basement and light cigarettes, you'll probably love it. But since I smoke my pipes outdoors, that lighter just isn't robust enough for that, in my opinion. I can sit in the house and it lights well enough and works. But its not stellar, and certainly is not worth 135. The same model I have is now 158. I could have spent that money on a knife or two that would always do what it is supposed to do.

I would tell you which pipe forum is the biggest and has great members and info, but the guy that runs it is an ass turd. Don't want to give him any free advertising. In fact, he's the type of guy you are around for about 6 seconds before you want to pop him in the chops for GP.

I think you should not listen to me and get one. You have the fever. I believe a lot of this crap we read on the interwebz is about status. In the pipe world, it's all dunhill. They are the best pipes, period. Just ask anyone.

Allen Putnam mini-grip scales arrived today, look great. Knife is still 150mi away. :-/
Hopefully that will be corrected in a week or two.

I'm on a folder-fixing binge to prevent myself from ordering new knives. Instead I'm trying to bring what I DO have closer to spec. 3 mods are planned.

Got tickets for the Garth Brooks concert this afternoon, only problem is there will be a few thousand people, so we'll see how that goes

I haven't bought a lighter in at least a couple years. Before my FiL quit smoking, he used to buy 'em 3 packs at a time and get a free "gas station quality" lighter... he didn't like 'em but saved 'em up anyway, and eventually gave 'em all to me. A couple gallon ziplocks full of 'em. Frankly they suck, but hey! they were free :p

Doc

Great points, thanks for your input bud!!

Not working in a slight breeze would get annoying im sure, but wouldnt effect me much i dont think since i do mostly smoke in my basement, no matter if its a cigarette, pipe, bong or whatever. Only time i smoke a pipe outside is while camping, and i doubt id even take an expensive lighter camping for fear of loosing it or messing it up. This would be an indoor lighter for sure.

Most of the reading on lighters that i have done is indeed on a couple different pipe forums. Still the main opinion im getting from mosts posts is they are one of the best lighters out there.

I have read issues from using zippo or other brand flints in them, i have read issues about using cheap butane, i have read issues arising from not bleeding the tank before/between refills...These seem to be common issues with most/all refillable lighters though and when properly maintained im not finding many problems for the Old Boys, the couple i have read about had their problem fixed by sending the lighter in for repair or replacement. Seems the people who did so, and that commented after getting the new/repaired one all seemed to be happy.

Since yours has issues lighting inside, or not working "stellar" have you thought about sending it in for repair? maybe the nozzle just needs to be cleaned. For the price it should light the first try indoors, every time, and work flawlessly. Id be sending them back as much as it took to get one that worked flawlessly at this price.

The one im looking at is 108 bucks shipped. All black Matte version. But id also get the good butane and extra IM corona flints so the total purchase would be 135 shipped. A lot of cheddar for a lighter.

Doc your like the old wise man on my shoulder telling me its a bad investment..... And then i got this damn devil on the other side screaming "Get it"

:D
