Great points, thanks for your input bud!!

Not working in a slight breeze would get annoying im sure, but wouldnt effect me much i dont think since i do mostly smoke in my basement, no matter if its a cigarette, pipe, bong or whatever. Only time i smoke a pipe outside is while camping, and i doubt id even take an expensive lighter camping for fear of loosing it or messing it up. This would be an indoor lighter for sure.

Most of the reading on lighters that i have done is indeed on a couple different pipe forums. Still the main opinion im getting from mosts posts is they are one of the best lighters out there.

I have read issues from using zippo or other brand flints in them, i have read issues about using cheap butane, i have read issues arising from not bleeding the tank before/between refills...These seem to be common issues with most/all refillable lighters though and when properly maintained im not finding many problems for the Old Boys, the couple i have read about had their problem fixed by sending the lighter in for repair or replacement. Seems the people who did so, and that commented after getting the new/repaired one all seemed to be happy.

Since yours has issues lighting inside, or not working "stellar" have you thought about sending it in for repair? maybe the nozzle just needs to be cleaned. For the price it should light the first try indoors, every time, and work flawlessly. Id be sending them back as much as it took to get one that worked flawlessly at this price.

The one im looking at is 108 bucks shipped. All black Matte version. But id also get the good butane and extra IM corona flints so the total purchase would be 135 shipped. A lot of cheddar for a lighter.

Doc your like the old wise man on my shoulder telling me its a bad investment..... And then i got this damn devil on the other side screaming "Get it"

:D

Wood,

I was just reading about them a few minutes ago. I found entire pages about their faults. But I was looking for bad reviews and you are looking for how great they are. Oh well. Buy one. I did find, however, that the warranties are dwindling and that doesn't seem to be a repair shop in the USA anymore. They have to shipped oversees.

As for sending it back.. Uh no. I have wasted as much on the POS as I ever will. I just pulled it out of my box, and it lit right up!!! First strike!!!After a few times of that, it won't light at all... Same story. I hate that thing.
Not as much as I hate monkeys, but quite a bit.

I think you should get it. Maybe mine was a fluke. Buy that bad boy. If it works out great, I'll acknowledge your success and be happy for you. But if it turns out to be a POS like mine, Ima ride you like a 3 dollar mule.

You can still send them to a place in Nashville TN and have them repaired for 9 bucks i believe. I can send you the link to the place that handles their repairs if you want... But it doesn't sound like your too interested in that LOL

The warranty/repairs is the first thing i started reading up on. If the repairs HAVE/HAD to be handled overseas id stop looking at them immediately. Im going to call the place Monday and make sure they still do the repairs for 9 bucks. Their site still advertises it, but just to make sure ill give them a call. If it changed to overseas im done thinking about it.

But... If the repairs can still be handled in the US, ill likely cave and buy it. If its a POS ill admit it, try having it repaired, and if it still stinks ill admit they suck and get rid of it.... But if it works out well im gunna rub it in like a marinade until your forced to send yours in for repair :D

For Pete's sake ww, if you had just ordered the dang thing instead of talking about it for a week, you'd know by now if it's worth it or not.

snark

We are allowed to buy stuff without first discussing it here??

I thought there was a rule against that somewhere......

:D

I'm on a folder-fixing binge to prevent myself from ordering new knives. Instead I'm trying to bring what I DO have closer to spec. 3 mods are planned.
Me, too. However, I'm sure at least a couple of my fixes are Quixotic...but imma take those damn knives apart and see for myself. You know, just to make sure I'm right about being wrong.

heh.
my plans are: new scales for the mini-grip (notorius complaint) and modify the hideous pocket clips on both sizes of JYD.
Honestly, I have enough folders for EDC. I just want another traditional or two for completeness and that's it.

Between my 4 Kershaws, 2 Spyderco's, 1 Benchmade, 1 SAK, and a a handful of misc dust-collectors, I'm totally covered for folders. (doesn't count a couple multi-tools either)

Rules are meant to be broken, you rebel you. :D

Dotdefender is on the job men, we can relax.

That thing is really starting to get on my nerves. Spark is working on it, and apparently it's a big pain in the neck.

I am totally digging their confidence.

Yeah, right......don't forget you're in group therapy here.....and we all know you can NEVER say "that's it" and actually mean it. Sometime, somewhere....there'll be others.

How does a person get hay fever in the middle of winter? That's what I'd currently like to know.

Depends on where you live and what type of allergies you have.

If you have a mold allergy, and the conditions are right for mold spores to be produced in quantity, then - lucky you.

Certain pollinators produce their pollen in the winter. One I am familiar with (but NOT susceptible to, TYVM) "Cedar Fever" in Texas. Caused by a sensitivity or allergy to the pollen produced Nov-Jan by Ashe Junipers (NOT a cedar tree, but since they are evergreens and have an aromatic sap, they get the label.)

And this leads us to the ubiquitous dust mite - found in every bed and sofa from coast to coast - feeds on dead, shed skin cells. MILLIONS of the little beggars in a mattress. When conditions are right, you're allergy to them can cause hay fever like systems.

While the above examples are not all encompassing, they do cover a majority of winter hay fever causes. As a caveat, I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV. I have been an EMT since 1990 (still certified) and am surrounded by vast numbers of relatives who do suffer from allergies of all sorts.

Be patient. All allergies go away eventually. Either you grow out of them or you die. :D

indeed, indeed.
However my fixed-blade buying has all but stopped. The only planned exception being the RBK. The trick is to satisfy my folder craving juuuust until I start making my own. Then I'm safe. 'course at my speed that could take a decade or two.

Allen Putnam mini-grip scales arrived today, look great. Knife is still 150mi away. :-/
Hopefully that will be corrected in a week or two.

Wait a minute.... Trying to bring them closer to spec but three mods are planned???? These statements are diametrically opposed. :D
