2016 BladeForums Traditional Knife - Poll #1 - Main Blade Shape

What shaoe should the main blade of the 2016 BladeForums knife be?

  • Spear

    Votes: 0 0.0%
  • Clip Point

    Votes: 0 0.0%

  • Total voters
    0
  • Poll closed .
I voted because I have some interest in the knife at this time. If the next vote is regarding blade steel, I will vote again, If stainless is the choice I will stop voting after that. I see no reason not to vote up until the time that a person is no longer interested.

Best regards

Robin

Yes, I will probably do the same, as I think I stated earlier in this thread. I have nothing against stainless, but I already have too many stainless knives which don't see enough use, as I much prefer carbon. Since there's no longer any question of having to make numbers up, I generally ask myself if I'd buy the knife if it WASN'T the forum knife. In this case, I probably wouldn't buy this design, but there's enough I like about it that I'm hoping I can make an exception this year, particularly since I didn't buy last year's forum knife

Well, unless there's a surge of clip voters in the next 24 hours it looks like the spear fans are getting their wish.

Do we know what the next poll will cover?

What's not to like about one of these? :D

Ditto! I vote Spear in 2016!

I agree with Rachel. I see no benefit in a "public" poll.
The most that should be done is to ask that those who have no intent of purchasing a Forum knife not vote. We have done that in the past and it seems to work reasonably well. We usually get a few clinkers, but that's just going to happen, no matter what. Stuff happens. Deal with it.

From my perspective, there are no "regulars" in the Traditional Forum. There are only folks who are currently posting in it. The membership changes over time. I've watched it happen. There are folks who post often. There are folks who post seldom. There are folks who post prolifically for a while, then their interests turn elsewhere. There are folks who have close friends who also post in the Traditional forum. There are lots of folks who don't have close friends here.

They all count the same to Gary and me.

And sometimes life just gets in the way.

I really wouldn't mind seeing a traditional forum knife in SS in the future, but I think this pattern begs for Carbon.

Wow, spear sure is in a lead. I'm not surprised, as it seems the choice the more traditional traditional crowd would chose. However, I find it to be less useful for me. I prefer the utility of the point on a clip blade over the hump on a spear (maybe more people spread butter with their traditional knives than I would assume?). I like the pointier spear blades like those on Victorinox knives, and I do see that the pointier tip of the clip point might not be as necessary with a punch. Still, I think Charlie's sketch ups appeal aesthetically to me far more than the spear examples.

STAINLESS STEEL FOR ME

Though I'm not one who dislikes carbon steel, I love it and can appreciate the ease of sharpening (though 440c is a miniscule jump from 1095 when you sharpen high carbide "super steels" for people regularly) but I just prefer stainless as long as it's done well, for its low maintenance. I use my knives and often forget or don't have time to clean blood/food/gunk/whatever off of them right away. So please don't label/perceive me as anti traditional or out of the group for wishing for stainless.

This is absolutely and unequivocally true. Since I joined Bladeforums in July 2014, I'm not sure how that's relevant to any but the 2015 forum knife - but true nonetheless. And yes, I saw the smiley face. It looked like this:  :D

He (rje58) is the one whose order for forum knives 2015,14,13,12,11,09,08,07 and 06 was never cleared. :D

I'm not sure why the term 'regular' has such pejorative connotations for some. For me, it is simply an abbreviated form of 'regular poster', those who post in the Traditional subforum regularly, or have in the past. In my experience here, the regular posters have always been both welcoming to newcomers, and helpful to those passing through.

Perhaps because in previous polls some people have resorted to name calling groups that liked features they didn't. *shrug*

But this wildly off track, I for one am psyched about getting a pattern with a punch. Are we going to debate what kind of punch next? :D

For me, a screwdriver, wire stripper, cap lifter secondary is more useful in daily life than a punch. More bang for your buck.

Funny you should say that, Greg. We just a spirited thread about that awhile back. Turns out some people here love them and some people think there's plenty floating around already. This year we're going with a punch which I happen to find extremely useful.

Caplifter vs punch would be an interesting poll. Although a few folks REALLY don't want a caplifter, I suspect the caplifter would get a lot more votes. But I think the pattern is set. Although there have been 8 other harness jack SFOs, this would be the first harness jack forum knife and the first single spring harness jack SFO.

I am absolutely with you there, but there are quite a few people here who feel like there is a glut of caplifters.

Glad to hear it!
Regulars Schmegulars. That's what I say.
Whilst I fully understand Jacks suggestion re itinerant voters influencing the final result whilst not actually purchasing I also believe that not one of us regulars or newbies or anyone actually entered the world of trad pocketknife collecting with a yearly trad forum knife. So i think we are safe for now.
As far as public polling -NOOO Waay Jose-Why?
Because there will be one idiot who mucks up my eerr his vote by pressing the wrong key and voting clip when I I mean he wanted spear ....eerrr whoever he is. stupid fool.:o

Quite Right Robin
This what I always do and end up getting it anyway. Is this what we call "a gentlemans agreement"?

A belated welcome to Traditionals! :D

Yeah, me too :)

Yep, and perhaps more importantly, there's already been one on a forum knife

For better or worse, I think the pattern has already been proposed and set, and this poll relates to the options of Spear or Clip main blade. I imagine the other polls will be on steel (possibly), and choice of covers. I'm hoping that, at some point, particularly with regard to covers, we'll actually get to see a choice of prototypes
