2017 John White MS Memorial BEST BOWIE Thread - Vote for FINALISTS!!

Thanks once again to Roger and Lorien for such a wonderful tradition/event.

1-8 Quesenberry dogbone
7-1 hybrid Maximus by Lurquin
8-1 Viovode by Burns
18-1 D-guard by Franco
25-2 D-guard by Nowacki
49-1 Talisman by Seward
55-4 SIFT by Chovanec

I don’t usually favor dogbones or D-guards, but all of these made me stop, gaze and covet.

To all who voted for Steve Filicietti Bowie, I didn't mean to imply it shouldn't be included, only that I found it interesting to see one of his pieces here after so many years.
To those who may be newer to custom knives, Steve was an extremely talented rising STAR here in the USA 10 or so years ago, however very abruptly dropped out of the scene under less than positive circumstances.

Anyway Glad to see/hear he's still making knives as it would have been a shame to see all that incredible talent go to waste. Dave Ellis, hopefully the Bowie you submitted is one of the pieces he owed you from years ago.
Sorry for the diversion from the contest, just wanted to explain my previous post.

This year has been a fantastic year when it comes to extraordinary bowie knives. I have never seen so many good ones before in one year.

But the best of them all is not here yet – it is finished and will be professionally photographed in January 2018 – it is a fully integral Orc by Adam DesRosiers – fantastic Damascus and mammoth ivory.

But my main point here is about Steve Filicietti and most of all Kevin Jones. I really think it is about time to let go – I also know the circumstances about Steve Filicietti a number of years ago, but it is time to give the man a chance and not keep on about things that happened a long time ago. I think that it takes a strong personality to make a come-back and to be honest: I am fed up by people who can´t let the past rest – the man has done his time. Let it go Kevin Jones.

All the Best

Peder

Peder - I certainly agree with your sentiments - perhaps from this point we can shift any discussion of those issues elsewhere.

As for the integral Orc - I will definitely look forward to seeing you post that up in January, and again in December for the 2018 contest! Adam is such a talent.

Always such awesomeness!!!

Thanks, Roger, for including Jason’s Barsoom....one of my favorite pieces I’ve gotten from him.

All the Best Peder

Hello Peder, I have let it go, haven't even thought of him since that thread of 6 years ago. However IMO it's important to give newer and/or uninformed collectors all the help we can. That's one reason why I helped found and was president of the Custom Knife Collectors Association for many years.

Having said that, while I certainly hope Steve is doing well and hopefully making right the thousands of dollars worth of knives he was paid for yet never delivered to collectors, if we are going to promote his work here via this contest I feel full disclosure is warranted for any newer collectors who may not know the circumstances and perhaps consider future purchase from him.
Anyway, let's get back to the contest.

I always look forward to this thread. What a great tradition.

My favorites are as follows:
  • Post #11, Knife #1: Marcus Lin – I really like the proportions on this knife. Everything appears balanced… both visually, and {I imagine} physically.
  • Post #18, Knife #1: D. Franco – Beautiful Damascus (blade, fittings) paired with beastly proportions. The lines seem very clean without being harsh.
  • Post #20, Knife #1: Julian Antunes – I love the twisted Damascus in this integral blade. It doesn’t seem like a Bowie to me… but it does seem awesome.
  • Post #28, Knife #3: Steve Filiceietti – Beautiful lines and balance. The guard is delicate and attractive, and handle appears elegant with a simple, uncluttered form that {I imagine} would feel great in-hand.
  • Post 61, Knife #3: Doug Campbell – Like Coop said in his caption, this knife doesn’t totally “fit” in a Bowie thread… but I love it. Beautiful materials and organic lines make this a winner in my book.
  • Post #92, Knife #1: Will Morrison – Every time I see this knife posted, something about it appeals to me. It is not cluttered, and everything is where it needs to be.

All of those makers do more traditional Bowies. Maybe they choose not to compete against the new wave of "modern take" Bowies that seem to be more in favor right now. Or not, just thinking out loud.

Well anyone could have nominated any qualifying knives from any of those makers at any time. I certainly would have loved to have seen examples of their work.

Thanks for the votes gents - and anyone still pondering the choices, don't ponder long!

Lin Rhea D guard Post 82 knife 1

Quesenberry Dog Bone. Post 1 knife 8

Franco D guard Post 18 knife 1

Franco Takedown Post 24 knife 1

Marc's post 27 knife 1

CAS multi bar post 28 knife 1

Seward Talisman Post 49 knife 1

:(

Or Kyle Royer. Or Rodrigo Sfreddo. Or Dave Lisch. Or Larry Fuegen. Or Harvey Dean.

A lot of missing "best-of-the-best" Bowie makers this year.

I have not seen much work from any of these makers this year

I too would of liked to see entries from all of the above but if they are not producing or getting the work photographed than what can be done

It still does not detract from the fine examples posted here and like any contest you can only win if you show up :)

Mamba remember last year a classic dog bone won and the year before a Musso rendition .....I can’t imagine more classic pieces taking center stage
