2017 John White MS Memorial BEST BOWIE Thread - Vote for FINALISTS!!

Post 1, Knife 8 -- M. Quesenberry Dogbone. Besides being a beautiful knife and the one on this thread I would personally most like to own, this award is named after John White and this knife far and away reminds me the most of John. IMO something like this should always be included in the finals.

Post 8, Knife 1 - Robert Burns Voivode Bowie. Obviously a LOT of detail work, but it all goes together to create something that is just a little different but not too different. Bottom line is I just like it.

Post 18, Knife 1 - Dionatam Franco D-Guard Bowie. I don't even like D-guard Bowies. But I love this one! Just flawless and passes the one, most important, test with flying colors: I definitely want to reach out and see how it feels in my hand.

Post 19, Knife 1 - Freedom’s Steel™ VI – Victory’s Edge™ Bowie. Look, any Bowie that sells for $120K needs to be included here. But on top of that, it is a beautiful example of a fancy Bowie, with high end materials, a classic shape, and a mesmerizing Damascus pattern, from a man with a reputation for fine Bowies.

Post 36, Knife 2 - Lloyd Hale/Gigi Orgera - Gigi's Momentum. Plenty of Damascus pieces here, but there is always room for the "plain steel" brethren and this is a lovely example, IMO.

Post 50, Knife 1 - Ben Seward Competition Cutting Bowie. With all the beautiful fancy Bowies here, we need at least one hard core working knife and this one is it. Ben had several other knives that I wanted to include, but we only get to pick seven, so I settled for this one. It also might be the most Bowie-like Bowie on this thread.

Post 94, Knife 1 - Bambara Bowie. IMO, Bambara does not get nearly enough "love" in this forum. His knives are exquisite and a tremendous value, and this particular Bowie is another piece that I wish I owned (congrats, Murray!).

Post 4, #2 Högström Sub-hilt Persian - terrific flow, movement and color, lovely long belly to the blade
Post 17, #1 CAS San-Mai - sinister and deadly
Post 23, #1 Franco Takedown - fantastic design, materials and execution
Post 28, #3 Filicietti Multibar - simple, yet spectacular, a masterful piece
Post 68, #1 Regel Ivory & Wootz - an assassin in a tuxedo, what's not to like?
Post 82, #1 Rhea Bristol Bay - perfect proportions and a uniquely beautiful D-guard
Post 94, #1 Bambara Jeweled Hilt - museum quality from tip to butt

Post 1, #1-CAS/Lurquin Hybrid. How could it get any better?
Post 2, #2-Jerry Fisk
Post 13, #2-Cody Hofsommer-This knife is so light and fast and well executed.
Post 18, #1-D. Franco
Post 25, #1-Stephen Nowacki
Post 48, #1-Ben Seward Impulse
Post 57, #3-John Horrigan

If I could, I'd add another couple of dozen.

Post 1, #8 Quesenberry
Post 11, #2 Klein
Post 18, #1 Franco
Post 51, #1 Bingenheimer
Post 61, #1 Campbell
Post 62, #3 Casey
Post 82, #2 Regal

There's so much awesome in this thread that it's hard to pick just 7.

Good luck to everyone! Happy New Year!

Post 1-8 Quesenberry Dogbone
Post 11-2 Klein Bowie
....love the knife, hate the sheath. If it was mine, Mr. Long would be making something tasty for it.
Post 70 Seward 21st Century Fighter

I think that the two Regel knife posts are the same blade.

I think that the two Regel knife posts are the same blade.

Posts 68 and 82? Same handle and guard design - but one appears to be a frame handle and the other not, different gold inlay (though we are not looking at the same side of the knife in both images, it would be unusual to have discordant patterns on the same knife). Blades are different finish, though it's possible post 82 is pre-etch. If it becomes an issue I will clarify with JL.

1-8 Quesenberry dog bone. Going along with the crowd on the one. ;)
18-1 Franco take down
28-1 CAS multibar.
49-1 Seward Talisman
68-1 Regel wootz take down

they are different knives

I made my selections by looking for knives that I’d love to own because they fit my style. I don’t need a major amount of the flash and glamour. I want the whole package to be what I love at first. The little details just make it that much better and it’s fun to sit there and discover them. (I love stag as well)

This was pretty tough this year. I could have easily picked 15 blades that spoke to me. However, in the order that they appeared, this is what I chose:

1. Post 1, pic 1. Sam Lurquin/Cas collaboration. I will predict I think this one wins the overall this year too.

2, post 1: pic 4. John Cohea Bear Jaw bowie. This isn’t a style of knife I would want to own, but this one is so well done I had to select it. That says a lot to me about how great this piece is.

3. Post 18. D. Franco. Elegance and perfection.

4. Post 20, pic 1. Julien Antunes. My favorite knife this year. I love everything about it.

5. Post 24. i4Marc. Superbly clean fighter with great Koa.

6. Post 28. Pic 3. Steve Filchetti. I want to stab something with that knife. I REALLY want to stab something with it.

7. Post 53, pic 1. Salem Straub. Green canvas micarta. ‘Nuff said.

Post 1 #1 CAS / Lurquin Collab ....... I’ve seen it and it’s that good.....imho the standout of this year

Post 2 #8 Quesenberry Dog Bone ..... He is the best there is at these ...it’s that simple

Post 3 #1 Lurquin Maximus Hybrid .......it’s mine :) from what Sam says this knife takes twice the time of a regular piece and nothing looks or feels like it

Post 11 #2 Kevin Klein Persian/Mediterranean Bowie .......... unique ...distinctive ....very well done

Post 17 #1 CAS San Mai ............... shape and texture

Post 18 #1 D Franco D Guard ........ usually not a fan of D Guards but this one is one of the finest I have seen

Post 50 #1 Seward ........ great example of a contemporary Bowie from a maker with a great eye and talent

That's the bowie I feel is the absolute best this year. It's so well proportioned and elegant it's definitely an inspiration.

Post 1, #1; Sam Lurquin/CAS Bowie. Epic describes it best for me. Keep going back to look for more detail.
Post 1, #8; Mike Quesenberry Dog Bone. If a Dog Bone Bowie ever got my full attention, this masterpiece by Mike did. Love it.
Post 18, #1; Franco D-Guard. If a D-Guard Bowie ever got my attention, well...you know the story. That damascus!
Post 23, #1; Franco Bowie. Did I mention the damascus. Great looking bowie, here.
Post 49, #1; Talisman by Ben Seward. Just so clean looking, with all the detail to boot. Great work.
Post 87, #1; Don Hanson Ivory Fighter. Don's double-edge fighters blow me away. Sorry there is not a professional photo of this one. Superb piece.
