Where does the "ram horn" come from exactly? Its probably off of some domestic sheep, not the majestic beasts some are imagining! ;)

Vote Elk! Otherwise we're gong to have a burlap micarta handle.

You should become a politician. That's the same bs reasoning that they use.

I don't quite get the "Jigged Bone doesn't stand a chance against wood etc." reasoning to change to ram. It stands exactly the same chance I'd guess.

Not really, ram is relatively rare. Jigged bone is not.

It is just our best guess, nothing more. I really like Jigged Bone and certainly have nothing against it. It just does not grab me for this particular knife. I also have concerns that Buck’s jigging and dye work will not be anywhere near what we have become used to from GEC.

So, please do not take offense. Good jigging is hard to beat. It is just that a lot of us truly believe it would not attract the same kind of attention that Ram’s Horn would in the final poll against wood.

Oh I don't take offense on this, no worries; I'm not planning on voting animal material anyway ;) . I just don't see how having ram that was ranking lower all the time would get more votes in the final poll. Or is your train of thought that alot of the people from the wood and synthetic camp voted jigged bone while animal voters voted ram?

I've never wondered if there was strategic voting going on to enhance final options from the other camps. Devious but I doubt it's actually happening. :)

My train of thought is more like a simple caboose! It’s just my best guess. It seems to me that in the end it will come
down to Ironwood versus the winner of the Ram’s Horn/Elk battle. We have had seen so much Ironwood lately that people might be ready for something different like Ram’s Horn. But there is no way to know for sure until the actual poll. These are all good selections, just personal preferences.

MerryMadMonk MerryMadMonk LOL , this really is like politics! You have just launched a last minute attack ad!

It's about carpet beetles and the havoc they can wreak on horn.

Yikes! We got some wool rugs that done been et ... The last thing I want to do is store this thing in a pill bottle. One thing that really caught my eye in that article was this: "Incidentally, if you attempt to salvage the horns from an old taxidermic mount, be aware that there is probably enough arsenic in that white filler inside the horns to kill you, or at least to make you very sick, if you saw it or grind it, and breathe or handle the dust." Sounds like something I might do. Thanks for that tip.

I think boring ironwood will win out regardless of Elk or Ram win here but we can always hope
The original poll, the only one so far that pitted the different materials together, certainly supports your thoughts. Ironwood was at 29%, Elk was 19%, and Ram was 14%

If by "boring" you mean that there's been a lot of ironwood knives lately, I absolutely agree. I think it's beautiful material, but I just want to see something different.

I think one factor leading to different results and even adding to the change at the end isn't as much strategic voting, some might be dropping votes or putting a secondary for something against a strong competitor to another option they don't want, but I think that people are changing their votes and views after the flood of examples of material and particularly when the examples are Buck examples.

I think I have seen as many if not more examples of Ram on Buck knives than Elk and certainly seen more that were impressive stand outs comparative to the Buck Elk examples.

Ha! I can see that now :D, but it didn't occur to me at the time. I was surprised to see Horn gain ground and just wanted folks to know.

For me, Horn is second (although not a close second) to celluloid in material to avoid. I've had family heirlooms that were all but eaten away by carpet beetles. I'd still buy one to support the forum, but it wouldn't stay with me.

None will win out to burlap! Mwah Ha Ha Ha!:D
You may be right.

My vegetable choices are out of the running. :(
(I already have a couple knives with the front runner, but I'd prefer something different. Thus I won't vote vegetable.)

My top two animal choices are neck 'n neck with no clear victor. (Ram & Elk)

However, my first choice in the mineral category is winning by an almost landslide, so I'm good. :)
