2018 BF Traditional Knife

Hey guys, I hope I didn't step on anyone's toes by going out and doing some research but I have heard back from Buck. They are willing to do a knife for us if the board and Spark is ok with it.

-Buck is willing to do either a 301 or 303 stockman pattern in brass or nickel silver.
-Handle material would be up to us. Could be micarta, ironwood, bone, stag, etc.
-Blade steel could be S30V, S3gVN, CPM-154, CPM20CV, or their 420HC
-Hollow or Flat grind
-Nail nick or the long pull groove
-Blade stamp should be able to be the dots and/or the Forum Logo on the blade or shield.

Price would ultimately depend on those options selected, but they would try to keep it around what the price has been in previous years. The board member with the relationship with Buck should be along soon to chime in as well.

Can I "Like" this post more than once?:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I'd be all over a 301. My initial thought was for a large stockman. Hopefully this works out- I'd hate to see the tradition interrupted. That's just not traditional. Yuck yuck.

That original post by @meako is the best and most truthful post I've ever seen on the forums....ever.

I agree, it's about the way it goes. Do you see why I added to it?

Edit: Just reading my post - should of answered my own question instead of asking because it seems short. I probably should of added a smiley face :). I added to meako's post because both you and gunstockjack agreed to do the forum knife on the same page. Very kind of both of you, very confusing too!

I like Buck knives, but they have their OWN forum here on BF.
Your right, but they are Traditional knives. As such, they are valid for discussion.

Too bad GEC doesn't belly up and get their own forum... I bet there would be a lot of folks that would take part in it.

The OP's knife would be more than awesome!!! But i would always be up for a birdseye pivot #71 or #21 in some nice micarta.

GEC made forum knives are pretty much guaranteed to sell out these days. I imagine this makes it more likely that somebody would step up with the required large pre-payment for the 500 or so knives.

I don't know that a Buck made forum knife would sell as well.

Someone should start a friendly poll. Just a general Buck, GEC, Either or Niether.

Exactly. There is tremendous financial risk involved here. Just sayin'.

Go ahead and start one. You might put something up along the lines of "unofficial... just for fun..."

I'd rather see GSJ/CC GEC made forum knife and Buck group buy.

Edit: if you decide to start one maybe you could add an option for GEC forum knife and a Buck group buy. Might help the dealers gauge interest.

I'm sure the Bucks would be great but I'm still in the #44 camp and again with all steel hardware, wood covers, federal shield and single clip long pull blade. I'm not even a 1095 fan personally but I'll gladly compromise for a single blade #44 pattern.

So the realistic options, as we currently know them are:

  1. Buck 301 in S30V, S3gVN, CPM-154, CPM20CV, or their 420HC
  2. Buck 303 in S30V, S3gVN, CPM-154, CPM20CV, or their 420HC
  3. GEC 15 in 1095
  4. GEC 44 Gunstock in 1095
  5. GEC 46 Whaler in 1095 knife

Wow. I'm all four Buck. I need another 1095 knife like I need a hole in the head. I also have 2 or 3 #15's on already preorder, and last year's forum knife was a #15. The Gunstock isn't really my kind of knife, and the Whaler is just .......... weird.

Just out of interest, in terms of the financing, isn't it the case that members pay for the knives they order in advance of production?

I would think the 46 ship sailed long ago. I wouldn't think the 44 is out too because they are already in production. Seems to me that if it's something from GEC it will be in the fall and not on the production schedule already. I don't know though.. just thinking out loud.

I don't want to stir any pots, I just want a forum knife to happen, but I would certainly be thrilled at the chance for a Buck forum knife. And skblades skblades certainly knows a thing or two about getting special Buck runs done. The chance for a choice of steels also appeals to me.

All that said, I do fear that a 500 knife run could be a real challenge for a forum knife. Last year's TC Barlow was able to sell well, but it was also a GEC TC Barlow. Would as many people step up for a stag handled S35VN 303? I sure would, but the flipper's market would not be the same.

I am totally talking through my hat here, as I have no special knowledge of this process, but I suspect that the amount of exposure that someone (like, say skblades) would take on over a forum knife could mean that a smaller order would be a safer bet. And that runs us into the risk of more people being sad that they didn't get a chance to land one of the forum knives. A 250 knife run might have a better chance of selling out in a timely fashion, but might also result in more sad forumites. I know that I can't take the risk on guaranteeing a forum knife order (I could not even do it if there was no risk), so I just have to hope that someone else is able to make it happen.

I can say that will certainly buy a forum knife if one happens, so I hope it does happen.
