If I had to guess right now, I'd say there is a 50% chance that the forum knife will be a GEC, and a 50% chance that it won't.

Oh, and a 50% chance that there won't be one at all . . . so figure it out.

LOL! :D

Before anyone beats me to it, I just want to steal this perennial bit of advice, which always seems to be a feature of the annual forum knife discussion thread:

"Why don't we all just go and buy a Case Sodbuster/Victorinox Pioneer in the same colour?" ! :D

Karl,
I think that was a little harsh and was not deserved. I certainly realize you are just participating and having fun with the rest of us. No need for you to stop posting or "take it easy". Continue participating the way you feel comfortable, my friend.

I was TRYING not to be too harsh Mark! Just like that sensible poster who edited a very harsh post yesterday ;) It's always nice to be nice here on The Porch :)

2. We are mostly likely going to need the help of a vendor to handle the shipping of the knives, so working with Enigma or Manly is going to depend on that vendor's willingness/ability to work with those overseas folks.

To ease your mind the Buck route, SK could handle logistics and shipping. We are set up for taking pre-orders if need be. For overseas shipping, that's something we can work out as well.

As for ease of access and speed of getting this knife moving, I'm literally 7 minutes from the factory, so access is a non issue.

Just a few more points to throw in the grinder. ;)

I'm rather regretting having to go out to the pub this evening! ;) Enjoy the discussion folks, and I hope I haven't offended anyone! We're all friends here, and I think most of us realise that these threads are always a good kick-about :) There've been some great discussions on the subject of the annual forum knife in the past, and some very heated ones, but when I think back to them, most of them had absolutely no influence whatsoever on the choice of knife! :D

Edit - I should also add that I have no dog in this fight at all, I genuinely don't care who makes the forum knife, it'll be the chosen pattern that will decide whether I buy one or not

My contact with Manly is waiting to hear back from them about a more traditional Bulgarian pattern, a carbon steel and having a smaller run of 250.

Manly has handled 3 forum knives for this forum, and I would believe that they have their inroads worked out.

Haha! very funny!

Well, sensible posters edit very harsh posts, some days!;)
Your comments just felt rude for no reason, not very welcoming to a "newer" member.
Sorry if I misinterpreted.;) Carry on:thumbsup:

Indeed they do my friend ;) I have no problem at all about being called on a post :)

As a new member, this is my first Forum knife. Obviously, everyone has strong feelings about what they would like to see happen, and that is a good thing. For what it is worth, here is my view:

1. We should wait for some sort of official word on which pattern and blade combination GEC could offer us before we make any decisions. Who knows, it could be something unique. I hope that whoever is able and willing to correspond with GEC can enlighten us on options. Thank you in advance to Charle, Barry, Mike, Jack or anyone else that could accomplish this. People seem to be jumping to the conclusion that GEC will not be accommodating, but we do not know that for certain. We just have not heard from them yet, and they are probably not even aware of this discussion. All things considered, GEC would be my first choice by far.

2. If it is a Buck, I would vote for the bare ended 112 with a natural handle material as suggested by Barry, especially one built by the Buck Custom Shop. The Stockmen some prefer are nice, but seem a little boring for an annual Forum knife. Of course, that is just my opinion, and I will probably not be able to resist buying whatever comes out of this sausage making process!

3. Because this is apparently a lot of work, I offer to assist whoever spearheads our effort in any way I can regardless of the knife selected.

I think anything AGR does is Chinese, which we don't seem to like.

I salute all those who think the forum knife is worth the wrangle. I'm already exhausted.
Stick & move buddy- stick & move

I am almost certain that Enigma couldn't do a run of 200 knives for us.

I am in for Buck. USA made, and it would be special because @greentrout is right - we're getting to customize a knife and no one else can do that. If we go with GEC, werewe're g to have to pick one of the patterns they're running anyway, and I don't see how that's any different from getting a "regular production knife with special handles," only in this case, Buck had offered us or choice of steel, which actually is pretty special. 1095 is what we're probably guaranteed from GEC.
Buck is being very accommodating thanks to SK for picking up on this & Greentrout for his effort. GEC seems to have a take it or leave it approach which I don't care for.

As far as GEC, I'm sure it would be a great knife. If they aren't all that accommodating, it's probably because the business demands it. I wouldn't take it personally. That being said, the whole flipping market on GEC knives has really turned me off. It's good that they are really that popular, but I found the high dollar hunt is just draining and doesn't spark joy for me. I don't think 500 knives is feasible unless it were another TC that was pretty exclusive. I'd buy one if it were something I'd like.

I find the Buck 300 series to be a really great idea. I know it won't be as cheap as a regular 301, but I think it would click all the right boxes without all of the hoopla. Plus it's an Iconic knife in stainless which many have been wanting for years. I'd have to buy one.

They actually source from many places.... I think even some are made local. That being said, I don't think I could argue against one from AGR. Most anything they do is great for the price point.

:D:D:D Ha ha! and a 100% chance it won't be stainless yet part of another run if it is GEC.

I like the IDEA of Buck or Manly having a go at this just to give the whole process a tonic. I don't see why a non US knife maker would present problems with distribution eithero_O I mean you Americans DO import a lot of stuff from abroad anyway, the EU, Japan, China to name but a few.

Who started the rumor that GEC would not be accommodating? They have bent over backwards in the past for BF members and the forum knife.
I think the "rumor" is just thr perception that any knife they would produce needs to be based on a frame already in their self-determined production schedule. Is that not the case?

I came to the porch for the knives, I decided to stay for it’s residents.

With that in mind I think I’ll stick to dwelling the more neighborly corners of the porch moving forward haha. No hard feelings.
This is the friendly part, haha. At least it used to be /is sometimes, depending on who you talk to.
I have enjoyed your posts and value you as much as any of the unfriendlies.
