Someone mentioned a stockman with a caplifter subbed for the spey blade. That's a fantastic idea.
How about a #47 Hay'n Helper, stainless, with a locking main blade?
No stag or fancy bone for me. I like users.

That spine could say 'Bladeforums' ;)

If we don't pick this for the forum knife I'm buying one anyway...that's a winner right there:)

If we get stainless, I'd like to see it be either thin behind the edge or something easy to reprofile like 1095. I reprofile all of my GECs because the factory edges are so obtuse and it's dead easy. Same with the soft stainless on my one Rough Rider, my SAKs, or Buck's 420HC. But Queen's D2 on their stupid thick ground clip blades? I got tired of wearing out my gear and basically gave up. It would have had quarter-inch bevels if I had finished. I had a long bout with BG42 on a Buck 110, which I suspect they left thick because BG42 eats belts. I love that knife now, but during? Not so much.

My contact with Manly is waiting to hear back from them about a more traditional Bulgarian pattern, a carbon steel and having a smaller run of 250.

Manly has handled 3 forum knives for this forum, and I would believe that they have their inroads worked out.
Ok folks, I have heard back from my contact at Manly, below is a copy/paste of his message to me, with my comments in bold face type throughout:

Hi Bill,
The more traditional Manly folders are not an option, we cant fulfill even quantity of 50 right now. The traditional Bulgarian folder is mostly handmade and production run is not possible. The only option from us is modified wasp to fit the criteria of traditional folder.
Above is regarding my asking about their more traditional Bulgarian patterns, particularly ones similar to the one shown earlier in the thread but also open to others.

Below was in regards to my stating that the 500 piece run was inflated, and a run of 250 sounds more like what would be sought.
For less than 200pcs I don't think that we can afford to design/modify a knife.

I had inquired about a carbon steel, or at the very least, one that will patina and stain. If it ended up being a tool steel instead of a simple carbon steel, we would like the option.
In regards to the steel options we don't feel comfortable to heat treat a new steel. We perfected the CPM154 and S90V, as well as D2.

Thanks,
---------
So, it seems like Manly will not be as likely an option as was once thought. I am sure, if a CPM154 Wasp with wood or micarta and the clip omitted was persued, it could be made a reality for well under $100.

Edited to change a quantity. I typed 50 due to autocorrect, when I said 250...

I have come into a little bit of money recently and have decided to fully fund the 2018 BF knife myself, including all costs to let each of you have 3 knives with different colors. All I ask is you pay shipping to wherever you are...

You will have the choice of black, blue or red Sharpie inscription, fine or medium point only. I can color the handles any of those colors too.

Thanks for the update Bill, sounds like the end of the road for Manly in terms of this year's forum knife :( But a good reason to snap up one of their 'mostly handmade' traditional patterns! :)

Edited my post. I had asked about a run of 250, not 50 like I had posted. Autocorrect changed "w50" to 50 instead of going to "250"...

I agree, they are beautiful. I am gong to be taking a long hard look at them. I want to see if any individual makers quirks or habits pop out to me. Maybe one person has a hand that I prefer, in regards to filework.

It's missing the dots! I call counterfeit!

Gary Grayley posted a thread about Manly Knives a couple of years back  I only have a Patriot, but what a bargain :)

There's some good ideas popping up here, and eventually we'll settle on something that's pretty cool.

I'm wondering though, do some of these proposed ideas HAVE to be the "Traditional BladeForums Knife" or can a bunch of us still agree to go in on a special run regardless? Would Buck refuse to do special run of 301s if it wasn't our official traditional forum knife?

By that point, it might as well be... If we all decide, and it is in time to be made/delivered this year, it might as well be the bladeforums knife, since we are the ones that cobbled it together and commissioned the build.

What's the name or model number of the one Jack Black Jack Black posted? So I can hunt one down...;)

If you look at Manly's website you will see a very nice Traditional in Stag or Horn that is rather like a Laguiole, complete with filework. 154 steel. The cost is about 110 Euro, but that's for one, a run might be cheaper.

I do agree with you about a Modern sans pocket-clip not representing Traditional ethos, pretty sure few people would welcome it either.

I stand corrected. It is not the pattern that was offered but I was wrong to say they don't make any traditional knives. I don't see that particular pattern listed on their USA website.

I want green to match all my brass bleed:eek::D:poop:

That one looks like a parts knife anyway and has had a long ride on the buffer:eek:

What's the Rockwell and heat-treat on this one?;)

You get to add your own dots so it'll truly be collectible...

This was the prototype, some may actually come out clear. Rockwell depends on how hot the food is that you cut with it. Really hot stuff, or direct sunlight, could cause a little warping.

Pity Manly can't do that Traditional pattern, but I understand that it probably takes too much time and they might not be able to guarantee timely delivery etc.

I've got in contact with them in Bulgaria as I'm interested in the pattern anyway.

A custom type Buck certainly appeals to me, let's investigate the Ram's Horn Avenue, it can look great especially slant bolsters :thumbsup:
