2018 BF Traditional Knife

Since there only seems to be GEC in this game, they pretty much get to call the shots and it will probably be like last years knife.

Personally, I’d like to see something fresh. Caplifters and Barlow’s are great, but the knife market is really saturated with them already. Want a Gunstock with a caplifter? There’s some Trestle Pines versions sitting on a dealers shef right now.

The Lion Steel option would be awesome, but I guarantee that will break the $100 mark.

Here’s a question for Jack Black.... what would the possibility be of A. Wright & Sons doing a Bladeforums version of one of their lambs foot knives? That would be certainly new. Might even help those of you on the other side of the pond.

Or what about a maker like Renaud Aubry? He could crank out a bunch of really nice knives at the $100 mark.

This Navette retails for around the price of the forum knife.

Just a thought.

I like the idea of a foreign made knife like an A. Wright & Sons lambsfoot. Good call!

But then my 'Murica sides comes out and says "Keep it in the USA"

draggat draggat Steve, I think an artisan like Aubry simply could not make 2-300 knives in the time frame people would demand. Likewise, I rather suspect a small firm like Wright might find it difficult to produce a large run but JB will know the answer. These are both non American patterns, would not bother me in the least but others might demur. I've heard that there are all manner of draconian laws in Britain now being dreamed of by politicians & the media that could restrict the delivery of knives to households....could be exaggeration of course, hope so.

Lionsteel will likely cost more yes, but the GEC 2013 knife cost 130 USD so the 100 limit is not total. Lionsteel could certainly produce a unique item that would be special to the Forum and a Neo Traditional might be an exciting avenue to pursue. Or at least to consider?

Like many other European cutlers, I think Wright's would bite our collective hands off! Though the stress of dealing with them might put me into an early grave!

That Navette is beautiful

How about an EDC sized or a nice B&T fixed blade?

Does it have to be folding?
For $100, we could probably have a sheath included, if we went a fixed blade route, as well as it being easier on the manufacturer.

There are only a few people here who could actually see a project like this through, and even less who are willing to do it. We are VERY lucky to have 2 people who are willing to work with each other and us to get this done. Charlie and Barry deserve all the credit for a forum knife even happening.
I think it's not too much to ask that we stay within their comfort zones and manage our own expectations to fall within that, if we hope to get one done at all.

.. In my experience their 440C performs leaps and bounds above the 1095...

440C, yeah. 440A, or 420HC, or(gag) surgical stainless, not so much. Lionsteel works with M390. Now there's a steel worth asking for. I love the stuff. It blows 440C out of the water.

Will, I agree, he would most likely be overwhelmed. I think all of my orders from him were around the 2 month mark.

I actually just read a dealer’s blog that linked to an article about Britain’s draconian laws. A sad state of affairs.

I dont have anything against GEC at all, and I am thankful for the people who organize this whole affair. I hope that no one is taking any offense to my suggestions. However, when there’s a wishlist, why not go wild?

I love the Lionsteel idea but who knows if they would have us? That would be up to Mike Latham, if he were willing, that is. His reserve list also shows a new knife by Viper that’s a shadow teardrop. It has a ball detent action. They’ve made several Italian regional knives with along with the domestically available DAN. It’s an ingenious system. I’d be willing to bet that once people get them in their hands they will love them. Those Italian cutlers sure know how to make a good knife!

So, Mike, if you’re reading this, is Lionsteel or Viper and option? An even bigger question is would you even be willing to put your hands in this project?

I would be in on a Lionsteel. We haven't seen the Viper teardrop in hand yet, although I'm sure it's fine. With Lionsteel, it seems like they're getting to the point with production on the Roundheads and Shufflers that they have better ideas about time, BUT, I think we would have to be a lot more flexible about timing with them than we're used to being.

Sorry Will, I missed this before (had a long day and ready for The Land of Nod). I think Wright's could handle 300 knives easily enough, and that we'd get a good price. The Draconian laws will only be an issue for those of us unlucky enough to live under them :( I think it'd need a few trips to the factory, and it would probably be best to ship most of them across the pond together, and then distribute them from there. I'm a bit too tied up with other projects this year, but maybe in the future if there were ever a desire for a Sheffield-made knife (with that kind of quantity we could pick the pattern)

GEC peanut style?

Lignam vitae covers?

Dagger shield with no words or letters like dagger in forum logo?

Fixed blade is OK but personally, I have more than enough of them. However, if people wanted it and if the pattern were nice then why not? Could increase postal costs though.

In a thread such as this, we should all think aloud- it's not giving offence to anybody-that way ideas grow and maybe solidify into something possible.

I'm beginning to get drawn by the idea of a special GEC 14 again;) Rat-Tail bolster, Smooth Bone (don't think there's been Smooth Bone before or?) Could be Camel Bone, Clip or Spear and Sheepfoot secondary. Never been done before, no other 14 like it. Why not see if Ram's Horn can be bought in?

There were rumblings about a #14 clip point barlow this year. If that happens then a clip point #14 forum knife would be cool. There were several smooth bone #14s, but I would love a smooth bone. I'D ALSO LOVE STAINLESS, GEC. A two-blade #14 in smooth ivory, smooth autumn, or smooth goldenrod bone, and stainless metals.

The 2008 Forum Knife was a Small Stockman made by the then Northwoods based on Queen's No.26 pattern. I liked the Queen D2 version more. GEC certainly seems to have shied away from attempting a proper Small Stockman, more's the pity.

traumkommode traumkommode No, I meant there hasn't been a Smooth Bone Forum Knife. I have an Oily Creek smooth bone 14 myself.

Ha ha:D You can wish on for that stainless, GEC won't do it they're rust merchants ;) No stainless offering from them since 2016:thumbsdown: I've heard it's because stainless being so hard takes a toll on their equipment, frankly I have a very hard time believing that;)

Seems there's a lot of interest in stainless and some showing interest in a stockman or small stockman pattern. There's another company who produces such a knife, has the capability to produce the quantity needed, and has produced a forum knife before - Buck. Maybe they would be open to doing a 300 in some sort of special covers. I know the Bucks aren't as popular as Case or GEC, but they may be willing to produce a knife with most of the features being asked for.

While I'm dreaming, a Lionsteel M390 Whittler:eek:...I love the Roundhead/Shuffler, but I just can't do single blade traditionals. I really think the Whittler is the perfect pattern:D.
