Let's take a short break to admire the progenitor of this tribute thread: John White, MS, who passed away in 2013(?)

Below is the last blade and pieces of the dagger HE forged and yet did not complete. (It is NOT an entry into the contest. Just a salute to masterful work.)

Enter brilliant Mastersmith Mike Quesenberry, who was prompted by the commissioned collector to finish this remarkable piece. Look at how marvelously it displays John's legacy.

It gets better: The knife was sent to Paul Long for the leather work, and then to me. Then, the WHOLE package was delivered to John's wife (Jill White) as a gift. No one charged a nickel. She was in tears.

Knife People are good.

Thank you! Fixed to Jordan Lamothe. (Being mistaken for Kevin Klein's work isn't so bad! ;))

Hi everyone :)

In 2017 I missed this thread with my mamoth coffin bowie, but this year I will try to enter the competition and show my work :) I cant make such a beautiful collage of pictures like professional photographers can do, so I will add more pictures, because the knife has plenty of details That just cant be seen on one picture :) I hope it is ok, if not please let me know and I will remove some of them! I certainly cant add all the pictures I made, because there are too many, but if you like you can see them on the thread here on BF.

Seems that every year the nominations end with some STRONG entries - well done all!

Okay gang, we are now closed to additional entries - let the selection of finalists begin!

Once again, a BIG THANK YOU for all the nominations. And a special thanks to those makers who posted up their work. . You should all be proud of your creations. Without you, we'd have nothing to talk about here.

This is a spectacular assembly of knives by any measure, and no doubt the decisions will be tough. Each year, this thread is what you make it - and once again, you all have made it pretty great.

The fun continues with what usually proves to be the hardest and most interesting part - narrowing it down to five finalists. The procedure will be the same as before:

1) Each member may submit up to 7 suggested finalists. You don't have to submit as many as 7, but don't submit any more than 7. I think we can all agree that there is more than one knife on these pages that deserved a nod? Please take your time to carefully review all the knives.

2) Please include the post number where your selected knife can be found, and the number of the knife within that post if more than one knife is presented therein - this will help clear up any uncertainty in the case where there are multiple knives by a given maker among the initial entries. For example - a say post number 30 has 4 knives. You want the third. Put "Post 30, #3". AND DON'T FORGET TO INCLUDE THE NAME OF THE MAKER!

3) Your order or selection doesn't matter - one vote per knife up to seven, each vote counts.

4) Please try to include a few words about what appeals to you about any given selection. THIS is what makes the selection process most interesting.

5) When all votes are in, we add up the numbers (each time a knife is put forward by someone as a finalist, that effectively counts as one vote for that knife) and the top 5 will be voted on by polll in a new thread.

PS - If anything is unclear, please ask early.

**** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** *** **** **** **** ****

I'll post up a a few of my selections just to get the ball rolling and then round them out. Have at it gents!

Post 1, knife 1 - Sam Lurquin - Emotional, impactful, fierce - these are some of the elements baked into every Lurquin knife.

Post 1, knife 2 - Mark Barlett S- Guard Bowie - I fell in love with this knife when it was only a mostly-finished blade. That looong, lean, reach-out-and-touch-someone profile just spoke to me. And then Mark went and just hit it right out of the park with the perfect compliment of textured color case-hardened fittings, and an immaculate frame handle mounted with stunning Koa scales. Yup - my kinda knife.

Post 1, knife 3 - Russ Andrews Stag Bowie - Timeless perfection. This could be used to describe every Andrews knife, and if you've been lucky enough to own one, or even hold one, you know what I', talking about. No doubt the lucky owner of this blade would agree. Damascus and stag is one of THE most compelling combinations for a bowie, IMO - and this one fills me with admiration. And envy.

Post 5, knife 1 - Rick Marchand Persian Bowie - Visceral. Beautiful. It immediately calls to mind the lethal simplicity of the first bowie knife - the Rezin bowie - the knife that made the legend. This piece looks as fast and deadly as the one which brought mayhem to the Vidalia Sandbar must have been.

Post 14, knife 8 - Kevin Klein - an exceptional level of elegance and artistry. Every knife Kevin makes looks like it should be hanging in a museum. Compelling combination of lines and textures seem to give his pieces an extra dimension.

Post 19, knife 1 - Lin Rhea - Here's one you could put in the dictionary beside "Bowie Knife" and nothing more would be needed. Love these combination handles that Lin is doing.

Post 48, knife 3 - John Horrigan - Turkish twist on a next-level scale of tightness. A bowie fit for royalty.

I'll add some more - heck, I'd like to nominate about 15 pieces easily - but while I ponder let me see your choices and hear your thoughts!

Special note of thanks to Coop, not only for his epic photography which helps us enjoy so many of the entries - but for including the terrific final dagger of John White MS - in whose memory this thread continues. It can't be voted on - but we all should pause to admire the beauty of the piece; appreciate the story of its creation, and remember the exceptional man that it commemorates.

So many incredible blades, it was hard to narrow it down to seven.

I always enjoy this thread. Picking favorites is easy. Deciding which 7 can be a trial.

This year was odd for me... lots of knives liked, but less than 7 to pick. Usually I've got double digits I could pick. Many solve this kind of picking-problem by putting up whatever number ended with. From my view of this thread... acknowledging makers... I feel I should pick 7.

Finding the last few made me really think about what causes me to like a knife... caused me to look hard. I always come down on total knife... how it feels... how all the lines and proportions and details work together, regardless of style or materials.

To me, theses are wonderful knives:

11-1... Bui Thanm Nam

14-5... Songrit Mawan

15-3... Brian Chovanec

22-3... Paul DiStephano

32-1... Don Hanson

48-2... David Lisch

51-1... John Cohea

Mike Krall

1. Russ Andrews. Because, well, it's Russ Andrews. :p
2. Mike Diebert. Wondering how he managed to "flip" that feather and make it work when he drew it out.
3. Don Hanson. Because, well, it's Don Hanson.:p
I'm out.

1-1 Sam Lurquin
14-1 Julian Antunes
14-8 Kevin Klein
18-1 Lloyd Hale
22-2 Kevin Casey
22-3 Paul DiStefano
46-4 Noah Vachon
