I voted for GEC because I would love to have a jumbo jack based on the upcoming 86 pattern. I would like to get the PPP stamp on our 2019 knife. I’m also hoping for some killer jigging to make this one for the ages. Basically a jumbo jack version of this...

Travman,

Actually, I think the the #86 is a 1/10th of an inch longer than the #78. Same knife, it just has a different shaped bolster at the pivot end. Just the right size. I too, will buy some if the handles are what I want, need, and lust for.
Agree with you that it would be ideal as a Forum knife! I see no reason to force some poor volunteer to negotiate with Madagascar for a midget pruner upside down knife with coconut husk handles.

Personally, I don't know of a BF dealer who has a business relationship with any Sheffield company. That could negate that option.

Sounds like we just need to wait for the owner and mods to tell us what our options are.
I'm a little new to this Forum Knife start up process and I guess we've been going about it poorly.
I am willing to wait for the Owner and Mods to give us direction and tell us what our options are before I get excited.

I really don't know what the answer is. I remember making the mistake of starting a thread on the topic of a forum knife after I had been on the forum for about six months, and the reaction to that certainly convinced me that I was never going to start a thread on the topic again. Every year the topic comes up and the initial thread(s) is a problem. Last year I think we came close to not having one since no one asked about it until pretty late in the year. Skblades really saved us there. It would be nice if there were some sort of guidelines for how to go about starting the process, right now the process feels very opaque and requires the stepping on of toes and hurting of feelings to even get off the ground.

Every year that I have been on the forum the end result has been a truly excellent knife at an outstanding price point. The process works, I just wish there was some sort of system that did not require someone to be the tallest nail to get it moving.

Sheffield may yet be an option. We'll see.

The problem that I see with Sheffield is that the folks around here are fussy about their knives. Every year we get some that folks want modified. We would not expect any dealer working with us this year to have to fuss with it. Wouldn't be fair to them. Having individuals ship unsatisfactory knives to UK, getting the problems fixed, then shipped back sounds like a nightmare to me.

Doing some querying outside the discussion forum.
Hoping to have some answers by the end of the month as to which companies we might be able to buy from. Then we can start a poll for real.

As I've said previously, from a selfish point of view, I'd like to see an American knife, and my vote went to Hess (I can get a Sheffield knife anytime). However, I was asked if a Sheffield knife was a viable option, and I think it could be. I think a Sheffield knife would be good for the forum, for the reasons many have referred to, and I would have been prepared to help out. The idea of a Sheffield knife seems to have ruffled a few feathers, and I don't want to be caught in the crossfire, to have to defend myself, or to be forced into a uneven argument. So, sorry folks, count me out, I'm just going to go back to what I was doing before, and leave this one to the experts

Maybe a Sheffield forum knife would be a catalyst for a reputable dealer to start carrying Sheffield knives in the US? More choice and selection is great!

I have always wondered why Sheffield knives like A. Wright are not distributed in the USA........

They seem like a good value.

I understand why Sheffield might not seem special to you and/or others in the UK, but other than insurmountable logistics challenges, I can't see why Sheffield would be taken of the table as an option to consider. It's a crying shame and quite telling that a Sheffield option would ruffle feathers on traditional knife enthusiast forum.

Oh, it's very special to me, hence my offer, in spite of the fact I'd personally rather see something I can't readily get hold of ordinarily :) Yes, it's a shame, but not a complete surprise

Frankly I'd be cautious about Sheffield. In general the knives produced there seem pretty poor in QC terms, especially when compared to GEC, Lion Steel, Case, etc.
Jack Black would have a far better idea though, to be fair.

The idea of a Sheffield knife seems to have ruffled a few feathers,
I don't want to stray off topic, but I'm not sure that it's ruffling many feathers. It seems to be winning the poll, which tells me they are very well received, especially going head-to-head with the mighty GEC. It seems these polls can bring out many negative comments, but that's because we live in a society where only the winners are glorified, so some people want to just run down other options.

I'm sorry to see this. I was looking forward to something out of the ordinary. Thank you for your offer Jack. I'm sorry that it was met with such a poor response. Shot down before the concept was completely fleshed out. I apologize if you feel like somebody peed in your Cheerios. Thanks again.

Ok. Could someone give me the very abridged crash course of a "Sheffield" knife. I know of A. Wright and Joseph Rodgers, but other than the two names and a few pictures, thats the extent of my knowledge. Which maker would we hypothetically be considering?

The "standard" knives they pump out are aimed at being inexpensive working knives; so yes, they can have a couple rough edges. However, the ones that Jack has overseen in production for his Guardians knives have all been very, very well received for build quality. A little extra cost makes sure an eye for detail is carried out.

I appreciate your willingness to move on this, despite the misplaced fervor of noobs like me. I also appreciate you keeping this thread open for discussion, even though the conclusions are premature.
