I voted for Smooth Wood, and I am hoping for Gabon Ebony!!
That wood is such a classic for traditional knives!!

I don’t mind Ebony Charlie but the knife on the far left is the one that catches my eye!

If is it pure black, Ebony is stunning, but it isn’t quite as stunning with brown streaks. We don’t know which we will get.

Here is a good example

I think this knife would be a classic with any wood, but especially jobillo, walnut or similar - deep and rich and, most important, reliable.

I would add cocobolo to the list but the stuff we have seen lately hasn’t been great quality. Rosewood might be an option but we could run into CITE issues.

Here is some jobillo:

If we didn’t go for a ‘character’ wood, my second choice would be sawcut bone - I personally think an antique ivory, callico, or similar lighter color would be best, I think that would look fantastic sawcut and I don’t think we have seen too many light sawcut bone, aside from a TC barlow or two.

Like this Remington:

Like others, I have my doubts that rogers-style bone (as seen on the rope knives and more recently the yankee whittler) can be relied upon to be produced - I don’t know the details.

It would be useful to have this clarified to help decision making!

I know I'm new to the traditional side of the forum and this would be my first real traditional purchased so my tastes may be way off, but I'm surprised I'm the only one who voted for micarta so far; I feel it would be fantastic.

I'm guessing the main reason micarta isn't in the running is that the barlow 2 years ago had it.

The congress had paper micarta 201?4
Imo the blandest scales ever...no character.
Id prefer groovy ghoulie gold glitter over it.

Makes more sense now if it's been on prior forum knives, since I tend to buy knives I use a lot I've come to like Micarta over wood, I'm a fan of the texture and it looks pretty good when done right.

I'm good with whatever the final result is, I'll certainly be buying it regardless.

I would love to see red linen micarta on this knife.

I will certainly buy whatever is chosen and be delighted to do it.

I enjoy the narratives throughout so far such as:
"We can have a truly unique knife from GEC instead of one of a million made Bucks!"

Then, when cover options are available, everyone chooses the same old, same old jigged bone or smooth wood.

What happened to that desire for something truly unique? Let's get weird. Scratted or checkered wood would be -really- unique.

Waverave's example pic of jigged bone is the bomb! It's just spectacular. Speaking of which I wonder how that would look with a bomb sheild?
The main issue I see with it is it's been a long time since we've seen a GEC with that jigging, and there's no indication that it's even on the table here. I like it, but feel like that picture is being taken as the exact jigging we are voting on since it's the pic being circulated on these threads.
