Love your post Meako.

I was sitting here, drinking my coffee, gazing out across the Tasman sea. Thinking, what type of wood would complement this nautical theme?

COME ON IRONWOOD!!! :D

I’d be ok with bloodwood, but would much prefer ironwood. One key thing to notice is that the non-black woods have a significant majority over AB/Ebony, but the time may come that we have to band together or risk succumbing to the darkness! ;)

Blackwood is endangered, Bloodwood is sunk, I’m going to Ironwood. There is no way I will bring an endangered species into my home.

If anyone ever needs to imitate a @Modoc ED post and you don’t have any pressure treated lumber on hand, cardboard and a sharp chisel will do in a pinch.

Hey, is it too late to add cardboard slabs to the poll? It is a wood-product.

Looks like it is going to be african blackwood, bloodwood or desert ironwood. AB is in the lead at the moment but who knows. I am excited for any of those and hope I get a good example when that time comes.
Also looks like the orleans shield is running away with that poll. So here are the three materials with orleans and reverse orleans.

Edit - shield size adjusted

Darren, Great mock ups! Thank you.
I think all the shields need to be sized down just a smidge to be representative of the actual shields used, though. They all look a little too big. Please take this as constructive criticism.
Thanks again for all the work you have put in this.

I see the AB choice got a little surge - the Ironwood looks great but the ironwood I get from GEC has never looked close to that good unfortunately...

Call it a hunch...I'm probabably just being silly...but I think Prester John Prester John wants Ebony or Blackwood.:D too bad the noble hounds eyes seem to be saying " Gee Grester Grohn, Roo Grshould gret a Grife grats gr same gruller graz me!" how could you say no?

AAh the moody Tasman..you aint in Canberra any more Camillus Camillus ....Bermagui?No wait...Batemans bay-the Tollgate islands in the background...

I don't mind any of the front runners. If I had to put them in order at this very moment it would be.

1) African Blackwood
2) Bloodwood
3) Desert Ironwood

I was a fortunate recent recipient of a lambfoot in ironwood (that is really beautiful). I was lucky to get a great specimen that I love, so that ironwood itch has been scratched. That and the fact that the Bolster/Shield finish must be brushed puts it at the bottom of the top 3.

That is your choice. We all can make our own choice and should not be shamed for our choice.
It's starting to get old, to be honest.
Without taking a strong side in this aspect of the discussion, I think sustainability is as valid a reason for a choice as aesthetics, consistency, cost, etc.

For the record, it's only borderline endangered:

Sustainability: African blackwood is listed on CITES appendix II under the genus-wide restriction on all Dalbergia species—which also includes finished products made of the wood. It's also reported by the IUCN as being near threatened. Technically it doesn't meet the Red List criteria of a vulnerable or endangered species, but is close to qualifying and/or may qualify in the near future.

I've got to say, I'm having trouble deciding. I was leaning toward the bloodwood, because I read that it will darken with age, but now I'm reading reports of it staying quite red for a long time. :( I really want something with more interesting grain than ebony, but less figured grain than ironwood (and the brushed finish doesn't appeal to me). Maybe jobillo could suddenly gain some momentum...o_O

Mark,
I simply stated my new vote and the reason I changed it. It was not directed at you. I certainly don’t want to shame anyone. I don’t even know you. It’s really getting prickly out here on the porch. I think I need a safe space.

I think the squabble between blood wood and ironwood will make African Blackwood win.

 That’s what I’m afraid of! :(

I only have one bloodwood knife (GEC) and two ironwood knives (GEC and 2019 Guardians). Both ironwood examples are much better looking, especially in person. As for this poll, it seems like bloodwood has lost its momentum, and ironwood is on the move!

VOTE IRONWOOD!!!

I have a feeling Bloodwood would have a more consistent presentation, similar matching scales on both sides and to others in a batch than Ironwood. I'm not sure if that is true, but if so I'll probably lean more toward Bloodwood.
