Having been properly chastised by Pgg365247 Pgg365247 , allow me to say something about Ironwood, despite my desire for AB. It’s a wonderful wood, especially if you’re allowed to individually select. One of the qualities I would appreciate if Ironwood is chosen, is that each knife will be unique.

I sincerely apologize if what I wrote was taken that way @cigarrodog. I have pretty thick skin and sometimes am guilty of assuming everyone does. I meant no ill will at all my friend. With that, my preference is to take any side conversations that aren't relevant to the topic of the thread to PM.

However this voting turns out, it appears there is one magnificent knife in the making. I'm just really thrilled for the opportunity to have a world class knife maker like GEC allowing MY input on anything they are going to make. Big thanks to Mike and to everyone for their knowledge and input being put into this great piece.

The people who are voting for bloodwood in the hope its color will change leave me a bit puzzled. Reminds me of the old joke about marriage.

I was and still am a firm believer that THIS knife with its heavy sheepsfoot blade is a rope knife design, and for that reason I am going to use this slab of gorgeous jobillo on one, to maintain the nautical theme.

It does help that this wood is a close match to the 1960s mahogany gunwales on my mirror dinghy (a bad snap I took this morning not realising I might use it here!). I just love the glow of varnished mahogany on old boats!

But if that isn’t a goer, and if gorgeous Che chen (which would be more popular if called black poisonwood) isn’t either, then I am firmly in the blackwood or ironwood camp.

Do we have confirmation of the pin and liner color yet?

Got enough for two rehandle jobs? :D
Beautiful stuff!

From the Wood database -

Bloodwood
Color/Appearance: Heartwood is a bright, vivid red. Color can darken to a darker brownish red over time with exposure to light. Applying a thick protective finish, and keeping the wood out of direct sunlight can help slow this color shift. Well defined sapwood is a pale yellowish color, though given the typically large trunk diameters, it’s seldom seen or included in imported lumber.

That maybe marketing directed at people who want it to retain its just-cut brightness. I suspect the reality is more that it just gets dull.

Many of us have bloodwood and I think it looks ok as an accent on a smaller knife like a #66. Seens to look best with an end cap. But the lack of feature becomes evident on larger pieces, where you want some interest.

Y'know, I'm surprised that bloodwood took off instead of jobillo, in spite of all the reasons you just stated. I agree that jobillo would be the perfect slab wood for this knife. I'm voting jobillo on the off chance that the bloodwood people have a change of heart.

If you don't want a jet black knife vote rosewood it seems like it's our only shot at a non jet black knife. None of the other colored options look to be gaining any ground on rosewood.

Why would the Wood Database care about marketing?

I’m heartened to see the shift to Desert Ironwood! I hope that some others with votes for quality choices like Osage, Cocobolo, and Chechen will migrate.

I’m sorry but bloodwood is awful boring for a knife this nice, ironwood is where I’ll stay unless I have to shift to AB at the last minute to avoid bloodwood.

I will take anything but a black wood. If ironwood stars winning I will switch over. This knife deserves something more than just black handles.
