Attention 2019 Forum knife question thread.

I have been wanting GEC Babylon Hill special knives for a long time. Too many were made in 2013 with ugly acrylic scales. And those are the ones that we see on EVIL-BAY for $250-300. I aint paying crazy prices and miss the new knives being freshly made. If we band together and put it a 500 pieces run of that knife. It might get GEC to re-run that knife also. 2020 Blade Forum GEC#64 Babylon Hill Special Antique Goldenrod Camel bone !!!! We all vote on the badge !

I just read this last page of the thread and have been on and off the BF this year with some good gaps in between. I have voted on previous knives and several times the vote has gone in a different direction than I'd hoped. Once I get to that point, I stop adding my input because I've decided in my mind not to purchase one often simply due to style preferences. I'd hope there is a decision point for us all and once a person realizes that they stop providing feedback on design. On the other hand I've missed the boat completely and not voted on anything involving the knife and found I've missed the timeframe to order or get on the order list on a knife I really liked. I've worked it out a few times and found them after the orders have arrived or begged and cried a bit to try to get one. I realize there is a bunch of work and effort that goes into designing and making our BF trads knife. I appreciate all that are involved and if I obligate to buy one I will. However, things do change in people's lives such as jobs, income, housing, marital status, children, vehicles, health, and these factors can cause a person to change their spending habits and decisions. People may not be in a position to purchase a knife one or two months after they obligated to buy one. This is a difficult position for our organizers and Trads BF knife project managers to deal with because of the expensive overall cost of the project. Pre-paid may be the best option. If you miss it you have to look for one later. If you obligate to buy one you must purchase it when you obligate.
I agree. When you consider it was about seven months between signing up and getting the notice for payment, I'm not surprised that a significant number went unclaimed. (10% or so?) Not everyone who qualified to order is a 'regular' in this subforum, and a certain percentage will miss the notification, or be unable to buy at that time.

Ok enough of this stuff, its all been made right. Now all I really want to know is will I be using it to eat Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas dinner :D kidding aside I can't hardly wait. I really hope the people at GEC reads these threads and know how excited we all are, well I am anyways! I feel good when the work we do is appreciated by the company that we work for. That our refurbished houses sell better and faster than newly manufactured homes. So I hope that they look at our excitement for this knife and feel proud. I hope someone looks at one before it goes into the tube and thinks "This may be the one that goes to that Hillbilly guy,he's going to used it until the blade is almost black with patina. And the bolsters and shield will be dulled from carry in a pocket with coins and odd screws and driver bits, but thats ok because we built it to take the work it will do" And be proud. And the next will go into a tube and he thinks "This one may go to someone who will treasure it as a beautiful work of art, and craftsmanship. Someone who will preserve it and admire it and its crisp lines and beauty, and thats ok too because we made them to be magnificent as well" And feel equally proud. I hope a certain crazy Australian knows that when we get that tube in our hands, at least for me, roll it over and read the words written there, before we even look at the knife it contains. And that is a special touch, not found on any other before it. And while not a tangible thing we can hold, I hope Darren feels pride in his contributions during the voting phase. He made some fabulous mockups of the various choices being discussed, and give us a chance to SEE it. I feel that helped immensely, and then we got a nice rendering of what it would be once everything was settled on. I have more than once went back and looked to remind myself of what was to come. Then there's Mike and the Moderators, I hope once the dust settles, and you get the time to separate from the bustle of it all,and see the excitement that will be once the knives are in our hands, and showing up here in pictures, that in spite of the extra grey hair its caused you feel it was worth the effort. And be proud of your hand in it as well. And to my fellow forumites, when you receive yours and its in your hand, take a moment to take it all in,and be proud to own a knife with so much in it.

Sorry for the long post,

Well said...looks like it's already a Thanksgiving knife! ;):D

Sorry for the long post,

GREAT post. Very well said. I think you vocalized what most of us here are thinking.... and managed to put it more eloquently than most of us here could do. Thank you.

I just went back and looked at the mockup again, and have a big smile.
But, do those match strikers actually work? Wooden strike anywhere matches I expect. I still like this feature, but do they work? My feeble old mind is wondering.

I've never tried to strike a match on one,but I'm sure it could. Well on some knives anyways, Rough Rider for example mostly have striker pulls but I think they're to polished and smooth to do it. If I can find some strike anywhere matches I'll give it a try;)
Somewhere I seen them called a "nailfile pull" but for the life of me I cant remember where.

I've tried with no success but I might not have the right match finesse hahahaha

Personally
I cant wait for next years dramas to start unfolding....who knows what characters will emerge from the mysterious mirk ..maybe some "old friends" will reappear ... We should think about selling advertising rights....and now a word from our sponsors..Relax! on a Premier Porch.... or Things not going the way you want? Tired of not getting your own way? IF you go home and take your bat with you...make sure it's a Porchenberg Popper...you'll be the envy of all your friends....each bat comes with built in compass and big cat pawprints.......

Im on the edge of an advertising abyss here.

First of all, I'd like to thank all the people who made this possible. It's a lot of work and your only real reward is an end product that will make you and others proud. I believe you have accomplished that in the eight forum knives that I have purchased. Not all are my favorite styles, but it's a cool
idea (gave away my age there). Every year, there are multiple "dramas," but if you have been around enough, you know this is like a family with some members you look forward to hearing from and some who seem to forget they are talking with their fingers. Of course, the big difference with this family is that participation is optional. Do whatever it takes to make this endeavour financially viable. THANK YOU to all who made this possible.

Saw my message first thing this morning. Mine is paid for! Thank you so much Peregrin Peregrin , knarfeng knarfeng , @knifeswapper & GEC for the chance and for all the hard work. Really looking forward to this. Made my day.
Now I wonder who will be the first person to mod this beauty with a easy open notch??;)

That depends on the results of the Pull Strength poll. I forget the results.,

I missed a week or two of this thread. It went from “I missed the deadline! Any chance I can get on a waiting list? Pleeeeze?” To an entirely different, in an opposite way, kind of angst.

I’m glad it worked out!

Yes, it works. If you can find Strike Anywhere wooden matches! Since a box of them will likely ignite when dropped, they are handled like hazardous/flammable material now.

Practice on the zipper on your jeans, then with a fast, heat generating swipe on your pants leg. Really cool guys can pop them off with their thumbnail. That is the proper way to light a cigarette you twisted up in a ZigZag with one hand while holding your horse’s reins in the other.

OMG---you just gave me flashbacks! Lighting “strike anywhere” wooden matches with a thumbnail or on the cutting edge of a front tooth was what we were all doing when I was in the Boy Scouts, which was ~6 decades ago and a few years before any of us (by then BSA dropouts) got into smoking twisted bombers. Only the hopeless losers demeaned themselves by lighting those matches on a pants zipper back then. I haven’t bought wooden matches in decades. Can you still even find “strike anywhere” wooden matches these days? I’d have thought they’d been classified as explosive WMD’s and banned by now.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming... I’m also looking forward to getting my 2019 Trad Forum Knife. I’m as always late to the party, with this being my first trad knife in many years and my first BF trad forum knife. Still, I’m really looking forward to it and my son will be getting the letter opener of a lifetime for Xmas this year. I hope I’m not in on what might be the last BF trad forum knife. I'd find that monumentally disappointing, discouraging and depressing. I really hope the BF annual trad knife forum tradition survives the Great 2019 Payment Default Scare.
