They are at different stages of production, the 92s are more in the assembly/ finishing stage and the 86s are still in fabrication. So are they building these side by side with the 92s? Or next month?
A few things that count against it:
Personally, the first two things don't bother me one bit but the third item tempers my enthusiasm somewhat.
- It's a bigger knife than some folks care to carry regularly (bigger than the 77 but not by much).
- Aside from the forum knife, it is only being offered in a 2 blade configuration (off-putting to many).
- Lack of exciting cover options.
I couldn't agree more! I would guess that a black wood option was taken off the table due to the forum knife being dressed up in it. That said, Barry's Bloodwood and the Stag are going to be quite nice, I think.
Absolutely and isn't that what makes GEC so special? The variety!Certainly a matter of personal preference, I am excited. Which of course makes neither of us wrong.
There seemed to be good interest in at least 3 cover options judging by reservations closing out for those fairly quickly.
I absolutely love the micarta GEC uses, and it will suit this model especially well.
I probably read this a while back and already forgot, but do those clips really have a slight recurve to them?
It might not be a frenzy to get a tortoise shell, per se, but usually the tortoise shell doesn't get a lot of love.
Maybe this has been answered and I missed it, but are the clip and sheepfoot on the 86 the same sized blades that were on the Stockyard Whittler?
Brass bolsters and a brass shield on the #86 tortoise shell acrylic knives would be so much cooler. GEC still has dealer NOS#66 tortoise shell knives floating around. I cant understand why GEC offers off the wall acquired taste acrylic colors. There are so many rich beautiful acrylic colors that GEC should be using. I almost bought a red river acrylic once. Three were up for sale on one GEC web-sight. I ran out of knife money and they were sold out when I had the bones. But I always spot a better knife to buy.I think that's because it's best suited to smaller, fancier, knives. I love tortoise on a small pen or Congress, or on a nice Lobster. Plus it usually needs some gold backing to really show it off.
Before Christmas , I have been pestering GEC to make Oily Creek bone knives after seeing the new draft drawings. I really wanted a #97 Oily Creek bone knife. I would of bought two. 4/12/2019 was "ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK" 65 years old since released. I pestered GEC to make an Oily Creek Bone #86 single blade with guitar shield & "ROCK N ROLL 65 YEARS" etching. Then the Rams foot #93 Oily Creek bone was announced. I asked GEC to put the guitar shield on that knife. I bought two. My #93 Oily Creek bone user is my most carried GEC knife. I bought a Northwoods leather magnetic slip for that #93 knife. That slip keeps my GEC#93 knife "tip up" at the top of my Wrangler jeans pocket. Left hand- one finger and thumb ,that knife is in my hand in the right position for quick opening in one second. When GEC announced Oily Creek bone on the #86 Oil Field knife . I freaked out again. I wrote Bill Howard month and a half ago about that knife. I have my #86 Oily Creek bone on pre-order. That Guitar shield and "ROCK N ROLL 65 YEARS" etching would look really cool. Much better than those sissy acquired taste acrylic "TANGO" knives. I am really thankful for oily creek bone . We'll see how it rolls !
Maybe they have a lot of that acrylic laying around and want to use it up. Your guess is as good as mine though.Brass bolsters and a brass shield on the #86 tortoise shell acrylic knives would be so much cooler.
