2019 GEC 92 Eureka Jack

Please don't misunderstand, I enjoyed your review.

But there are rare times when a knife is so purely exceptional that the enumeration of its virtues in words is unnecessary. So good, in fact, that the mere words can't even enter your head, at least not when you hold it in your hand for the first few times. There are times when a knife just sings. This #92 is one of those knives (another one for me is the #15 Sheepfoot Barlow in Cranberry Sawcut Bone). I don't own any custom knives, but I've handled more than a few and this one is better than all of them at a fraction of the price.

By coincidence, I had a email from Gunstock Jack announcing the availability of the OD Green Micarta version at the same time that I was unwrapping the Elderberry. Despite the fact that I usually don't care for the Green Micarta (why oh why couldn't it have been Maroon) and despite having a Camel Bone on Reserve, I pulled the trigger on the OD just to have one as a regular user. That's how good this #92 is.
I got the email just I was headed out the door to run an errand. When I got back, it said "out of stock"..... I'm certain I'll find one soon. I might even get one of the calico bone ones, if all goes well. The camel bone would be really nice, but I'm not sure I'll have a chance at one of those...

It seems that quite a few people don't like the look of the Calico Bone based on GEC's preview pictures. For my part, I'd also be happy to purchase one from someone who has a reserve on one but doesn't like the way it looks.

Based on pictures alone, I'd say I like the Calico better than the Camel Bone, which I have on Reserve.

missed the micarta the other day when i was walking outta the hospital, seemed like a great deal

Okay, all the rave reviews posted here and my own curiosity about the pattern led me to order one of the elderberry 92s. Not sure how I'll like the pile-side pull on the secondary blade as I've never before owned a jack knife in that configuration. But dang, it's a looker!

Yep, the old ones as well, such great knives, old and new:thumbsup:

Right you are about the spring, a touch of class indeed. But I've changed my mind completely about the new run. Just very disappointed that with such a big run and many variations there is no Barehead option. Plus the same side nicks on the original run are much more pleasing. Get the feeling that recent re-issues of patterns, thinking of the 82 Dixie Stockman, are not up to the original standard, my view of the Eureka too.Just my perspective and I'm glad about the enthusiasm the Eureka has generated, except perhaps for discussion about prices and where to get stuff ra ra.;)

If one recalls there was much aggravation with the previous Tidioute run because the secondary largely blocked the primary pull. Everyone was dropping the kick and wondering why the factory couldn't resolve this issue. They have also made it bare ended and end capped previously - I don't recall demand being light for two bolsters, but do remember the antique green bare end sitting on the shelf for months. Successful businessman remember what aggravates customers and try and avoid it going forward. Sadly with knives, eventually everything disappoints a subset of customers.

I remember the nail nick issue. I got one in smooth ivory (or white or natural or whatever it was called on that run) bone and really wanted to like it but just found it cumbersome. I am happy with the pile side secondary on this run.

If they ever make a clip main Eureka, then the coping should be mark side as there would be no interference with the pull on the taller spine of the clip. This configuration in barehead and with 440C (or better) blades would be the ultimate two-blade jack . . . in my opinion.

J.B.F.Champlin Eurekas by GEC in 2013!

I'd probably give my left you - know - what for one of those wood handled JBF Eurekas! Gorgeous stuff there Charlie.

With regards to the placement of the nicks on this latest run I'm excited to try this configuration. I absolutely love my Case Bose Eureka but my only nitpick is the coping in front of the main. It looks nicer for sure but it makes it a bit of a pain to get to the main sometimes.

Well, I must've been lucky with my first run Greenbone and Ivory bone, no access problems and stupendous W&T:cool: So I'm happy with what I have, not too bad;)

It's my feeling that a lot of early GEC knives might have sat around on the shelves for a while, this is because the current 'must have whatever it is', was not yet a driving force...;)

This was a bit of a problem with the 2017 two-blade #78s as well.

Wonderful knives waynorth waynorth !
What are the handles made of,
wood and stag or bone?
Did all of the old northfield eurekas had the matchstrike on the main blade?

Hey nifebrite!! These two knives marked "Champlin" were a Special Factory Order, made by GEC, so they have some special features. Stag on one and Walnut on the other, which included an extra set of (I think) old rosewood slabs if you wanted to change or just keep the handles!! The slabs came from the old factory before it burned down!! I think the match-strike nailpulls were special also.

Mine came in yesterday's mail...I LIKE IT:thumbsup:

Well I had ZERO interest in this pattern going in, but after reading all of your glowing reviews I just ordered an elderberry from DLT.

Thank you, special knives indeed!:)

The shield of these looks similar to the ones of the actual tidioutes, just a little longer.
Maybe because the champlins are barehead,
so there was more space on the handle?
