Why not choose both?

We can do it easily enough.

The GEC for 2019
The Buck for 2020

That way we solve the current impasse and save ourselves a lot of effort next year :)
I don't hate this idea. It would be nice not to go through so much angst next year deciding on which knife, and get to concentrate on the fun part: the polls to decide on handle materials, etc.
I agree, the 86 could be the best forum knife ever. At 3 7/8" it's getting into jumbo jack territory which has been a fairly hard to find pattern, they were usually 2 blades but I have come across a couple single blades. Couple pics os vintage jumbo jacks next to a regular size, these are 3 7/8" to 4 1/8"

Wow, those are nice, especially the one with the "not quite a Barlow" long bolster. Ebony with a bow-tie shield says "traditional" and this is the Traditional Forum Knife, isn't it? ;)

I like your analogy, but I would hate to feel that way about a forum knife!
I know. I try to be understanding and learn from what people say. But, I really do think we can make a Vanguard very special and one people will want to display or carry.

I am not switching my vote, but I am very happy with GEC and like their product very much too. I wish they had chosen one of these.

Here are my Vanguards. I have room for one more.

I would eat glass for a Vanguard in Blue and White Lucite

or Nickle Silver with Ebony

I have the Buck 192 Cabelas version shown above and it's a nice knife. Wouldn't have purchased it if it wasn't. For a forum knife in a 192, it would take a really durable but eye catching handle material for me to get very excited about this choice.

The GEC choice is just fine with me. I would be more than satisfied with a #14 frame (Boys knife) or a #48. Hence I'm pretty flexible in terms of anything made by GEC, even a fixed blade.

Very true. And while a lot was done for 70 some odd $ with the 301 last year, the 301 costs half of what a 192 does. And that's with 3 blades and 3 springs worth of steel.

I would like to suggest that you may not be aware of how Buck prices their items, what considerations they take, and what prices may be fluctuating. I don't mind the sentiment, but it based in nothing more than conjecture, albeit an educated conjecture.

I don't mind the opposing views given by champions of both camps. No matter which manufacturer is chosen, this will be a bang up 2019 Traditional Forum Knife. What I do mind, is information given to the forum as fact in order to sway opinions. That type of conversation has woven its way in and out of this thread, and it really isn't in the best interest of the forum. In the end, which knife is chosen is not what is important. What's important is that this group cheerfully and collaboratively come up with a representation for 2019 of the Traditional Forum. Isn't that what it's all about?

I'm not particularly pointing at you AJD, but your message prompted my interpretation of a sentiment I wanted to address.

These threads move so unbelievably quick now. It's really not easy or joy bringing to keep up in my humble opinion of the experience, but I know it is a big excitement for many and I don't mean to disparage that.

As for these knives, I voted simply because if it ends up being the 86 I might get one. I like the saber ground sheepfoot a lot. I don't know that I need another sheepfoot knife so similar to the others GEC has produced, but it looks cool.

I like the design of the buck fixed blade so I'll be interested to see what characteristic combination it ends up with if it wins.

Not interested in the Fox. I'm sure it'd be a fine knife but it looks like a knife I got at Aldi for $4.

A single Sheepsfoot blade is nice for the professional box cutter. I need a second blade on this one to switch my vote to the GEC. Or how about adding a screw driver - bottle opener and call this thing a Blade Forums Scout.
I agree a two bladed jack would be more ideal, but don't believe that's possible to do for under one bill anymore.

Forum Knife '19 is turning into quite a ride o_O
I just voted Fox to see the vote tally and see that it's w a y behind. No chance... Thus I went out and shoveled a bit off the deck to clear my head.

It hit me.

The Buck would be a really great display piece!
I will probably never "tote" it, unless that African hunting safari happens.
It might :)

Anyway, it's amazing how mindless activity can lead to an epiphany.
With a nice stand, this buck could be a great mantle piece, or on a shelf in the office...

So I'm changing my vote to Buck. The GEC with the sheep just isn't cutting it.
I wonder if other fence-sitters have thought about a Buck as a display piece

Difficult decision. What I'd really like to see is both the 192 and 86 with matching handle material and a custom sheath with a slip for the 86 on the front. I realize that would get kind of pricey.

Pun intended? :) :D

I like the idea of both, and while not really a huge fan of sheep foot blades I’ll probably buy the GEC if that is selected. But prefer the buck, I have a slight obsession with fixed blades :).

I also like the idea of splitting the winner and runner up into 2019 and 2020 options, especially if it takes some of the stress away from the moderators, Spark, and the dealers.

I think the main problem with counting votes on a 2020 knife now, is that a lot of things could happen between now and then, a lot of folks that are posting now won't be posting then, the finances and tastes of some of the folks voting may have changed, and there may be a lot of new members who don't really want to be tied to a vote taken before they arrived, or just may not want to buy the knife. I think it's likely to cause more stress for those organising things rather than less

I can't tell if this is tongue in cheek or not...

Regardless, everyone uses or doesn't use their knives as they see fit. I am still young and active enough that most, if not all, of my knives get used in some manner or another. I have no use for a display piece unless it has some sort of historical significance which I do indeed have a couple.

If the Buck wins, I will buy it and it will get used. Same can be said for the GEC option.

However, that is just me. Others will certainly have different priorities and that is more than fine.

If we can get the 86 in ebony with Northfield trim, satin blade, bolster, and satin diamond shield I'm hoping I can get two of them. One to use and one to keep for the collection. It will be an amazing piece to collect.

Thats exactly what I would do and what I did with the Barlow 2 years ago, have one in my pocket right now and a mint one put away, I would love a big sheepsfoot jack as a user, I've always found the sheepsfoot blade quite handy.

Good points, as always, Jack.
