I switched my vote to GEC from Fox. I want my vote to count and finally decided that the Buck just won't see any use, even if I grind off the guard. It's too thick and heavy. I'm more of a bushcraft kind of guy. Hope we can get a lambsfoot.

I voted GEC too because that’s the brand I currently enjoy in a traditional pattern. I’m on the fence about the 86, but it could turn out nice as a forum knife.

Edit - is that a saber grind sheepsfoot blade in the drawing on page 1?

This could be a great knife if we could agree on a cool cover material. I’m liking the idea of some deep jigged bone or wood covers.

Plus, we would get a pinchable blade.

I can't tell if this is tongue in cheek or not...

Regardless, everyone uses or doesn't use their knives as they see fit. I am still young and active enough that most, if not all, of my knives get used in some manner or another. I have no use for a display piece unless it has some sort of historical significance which I do indeed have a couple.

If the Buck wins, I will buy it and it will get used. Same can be said for the GEC option.

However, that is just me. Others will certainly have different priorities and that is more than fine.
I MAY go hunting this year. Once. Probably won't camp. Not carrying the Buck to work or around town. In other words, wouldn't use it much. Might buy it anyway. Would definitely use the GEC.

Sorry if I got anyone confused.
Not tongue n cheek. I think the Buck as a display piece is a great idea and one I'm hoping to see happen. I have many knives, including fixed blades, but none really display-worthy. That needs to change.

I love knives and it's time one was out front and center, a conversation piece...
If the Forum logo is there all the more fitting to spark a conversation and display my interests.

The more I think about it the better it sounds.
Yes, some will use the Buck, but many are dismissing it because they won't use it.
I think most of us have preconceived notions that our knives either get carried or they live in the drawer. Well, there's another option, displaying them.

It's time I put a knife on display and this is a great opportunity. Hope it works out.

I'm truly curious why this thread is so long. Are people trying to sway others to vote their way? Might be better to just vote without posting.

Now What fun would that be? This is our annual Hoot and Holler Festival.:)
Darn right! :D

I imagine those involved in actually making the knife happen dread the polls.
Maybe, maybe not. This is a knife discussion forum, and we are discussing what forum knife we might want. Arguments for and against are being made, and as long as the discussion is polite and respectful, it is allowed. It's not mandatory, so anyone is free to vote in the poll and unsubscribe from the thread.

Gone for a few days and talk about a lot of reading to catch up. Whew!
Obviously most of the discussion is about the 2019 Forum Knife being either a fixed blade or a slippy.
I also read some discussion of the 2019 knife being a package of both styles. My first thought was that this might make it financially impossible for many to have a 2019 Forum Knife.
With those thoughts in mind, my feeble brain came up with the following which probably might be a logistical nightmare. Apologies to those who might be affected. Please remember this is only an idea and is easy for me to say.
What about making the 2019 knife a "both or one" possibility. Ordering could be for either a slippy, or a fixed, or for both.
That certainly would make 2019 a banner year, for sure.
Those who might want both styles could do so and also those who might prefer one style over the other would be free to purchase their preference.
Further, why not make both the same as far a practical?
I realize that the headache of numerous follow-up polls might be seem to be a headache, at first.
But in reality, polls for some common aspects for the winning style would need to be created, anyway.
EXAMPLE: a poll for the handle material would likely need to be created for the single winner of this poll.
Why not create the "Handle Material Poll" for the 2019 knife instead of for a specific maker?
EXAMPLE: Ebony or bone or whatever - for both styles
BUT - also create a Unique Poll for each of the top two finishers in this poll. Again, such polls for a single winner would probably need to be created, anyway.
EXAMPLE: a 420HC or 5160 or whatever Buck steel option poll (if it is one of the top two) and a 420C or 1095 or whatever GEC steel option poll (if it also might be in the top two).
I would imagine, that the two top finishers in this poll would need to be contacted for lists of their common/available options before the polls are created. Again, easy for me to say.
As in this one, voting in the polls would be open to all but I would hope and imagine that only those interested in the specifics of either or both styles would be the only ones who would bother to cast a vote in either poll, anyway.
The point is that those who have already expressed a desire for a specific 2019 style (be it either folder or slippy) would have a say in construction of their favorite and those who who feel they might want to buy both could also have a say for their "matched set" - unique to 2019.

A single Sheepsfoot blade is nice for the professional box cutter. I need a second blade on this one to switch my vote to the GEC. Or how about adding a screw driver - bottle opener and call this thing a Blade Forums Scout.
Bottle Opener yes please ...Calling it a Scout?? Sacrilege! Guards! take him to the chamber of doooom.
So i jumped over the side and swam over to the Buckaneers vessel...

If I may?
I will buy the knife that is democratically chosen by the mob.I voted Buck. Any of the 3 choices look good..
The race is so close between Buck and GEC .Foxys on the run.
Why not seperate them and make a 2019 Buck Forum specific annual knife with the Vanguard on offer?
Leave the Porch to its own devices ..and the GEC which has taken the lead.
Unofficially speaking is the Porch the GEC subforum?
pretty much as its where most GEC related stuff goes on.
Thats a solution but everyone is entitled to vote...as per the guidelines.
Majority rules.
Is this a clash of 2 superpowers?
Seems like it with the amount of us n them posturing and the poll loading by blow ins from this forum who probably never usually go there. Now where did I put that flak jacket?
The immense amount of support both choices have received is positive.
With that in mind I suggest where the GEC 86 is a new version for 2019 and pouncing on it now would give us that premier edition kudos ...this year...the Buck Vanguard is a solid, time tested performer and would make an astounding step into the new decade next year as the BFTK of 2020...could it be done this year ready to ship in 2020?..We have another year to sort it out.
The idea of having both or 2 annual knives detracts from the meaning of it especially as it is unlikely to be the last one ever.
Cheers.

As the holder of one of the full sets of forum knives, this is the very last thing I'd need. One useless knife at a time, please. Unless you are volunteering to buy them for me

I still haven't decided. Both the GEC and Buck are appealing, but for different reasons. My young son would be delighted with the Buck, as he loves the fixed blade knives. The GEC, though, would be great for pocket carry, and who doesn't love a sheepsfoot. Of course, a lambsfoot would be even better.

Wishy-washy isn't good.

I decided the other day that I would not embarrass myself further by making pro or con comments. But I keep on tuning in to hear the latest of cutlery whimsy.
Only in America do people argue at the drop of a hat over nothing. That and manufacture knives other than Buck. And throw bales of tea into saltwater. My opinion is that it is because we are all hybrids. Have at it. It’ s popcorn time on the porch.

I voted for the Vanguard. To make this a little more special, how about the longer blade version as the forum knife? That would make it a lot more unique and collection-worthy for those that value that sort of thing. Me, I would love a 5” version just because. 5160, nickel and ebony would also be nice, as long as we’re dreaming.

Sorry if this has already been suggested, but I wasn’t about to read every post in this monster.

Too complicated! ;)

I'm really conflicted with this list of options. Not super excited about any of them. But, may consider the buck if that's how it lands (if price is right). I have soMe sheepsfoot singles, and I just cannot warm up to them. In my eyes, almost need to vote for folder or fixed. Then if fixed, have more options in that category. This year it just looks like trying to pidgeon hole three oddly different options.

I think if we were given too many options we’d all be arguing well into 2020.
