2020 GEC #23 Trapper Thread

Why, John??
Are you out of town?
Turning 57 in about a week... It's wrapped up. ;)

Makes your hand look tiny. ;):D

Mesquite sounds pretty cool...not sure how it is for a handle material. Growing up in west TX, you learn to hate it. When the mesquite bbq fad kicked off we were all for it, hoped they would clean it all out, no such luck.
what part of west Texas? I'm originally from Lubbock....

I spent a little time there, back in the late 70's... helping build a mall....
Funny, I wasted a lot of my youth at the arcade in that mall, haven’t been back in decades. I always described Odessa as a place you wanted to be “from” rather than “going to”.

I thought Odessa was just a rest stop on the way to Fort Davis, Alpine and Big Bend

There was a story, I don’t know if it’s true or not, about a young Dr and his wife that took a job in Odessa/Midland at a hospital and on landing the wife got to the door and refused to deplane. It’s funny because I can see it happening, not much in that patch of the state but oil, heat, and football.

Man Big Bend is pretty in the spring.

Yes... west Texas is not the most scenic part of the state.... People here in the metroplex talk about how there's no scenery here, it's too flat.... I just laugh. I tell them that you can literally see almost 40 miles in the Lubbock area. We clocked it in our car...

I really appreciate how the 23 Beavertail is put together. The shield is eye catching as is the etching and the bite mark jigging just ties it all together. It’s just a well thought out beautiful knife. I don’t feel the same way about the pioneer.

Sorry if this has been covered...so I was thinking some more about the pioneer model and my lukewarm feelings about it which made me take a look at the 2012 Trapper offerings (which were great, lot of handle options, lanyard holes and cap bolsters) and I saw this:

What’s going on up there where the jimping would be?

It's a locking mechanism, actually its the release for the locking mechanism.
They referred to as a "Bull Lock".

Thanks, I saw the term in the ad but wasn’t sure...never seen one. I’ll have to do a forum search for photos. Seems like it would snag up a lot in a pocket.

As I recall, that was the conclusion of at least a few of the owners of those, too. Nice to have a lock, but not so practical to have it implemented in that way.

The first of this run of 23's has made it across the pond. Impressive knife, it does not disappoint. Perfectly put together and the finish is almost spot on. I would say out of tube the pull on the main blade is a 7 and the spey is spot on at about a 6. The only gripe I have would be the blade etch. I don't think the etch suits the blade but mine also appears to be sitting at a wonky angle. Never mind, its coming off anyway. The finish on the bone on the show side is very nicely finished, not so much on the pile side, and that shield is perfect in style and size.

I don't think you'll find much jimping there on traditional knives. ;)
I always thought the Bull Lock was kinda cool, but don't think I'd want to carry one in my pocket.
