2020 GEC #23 Trapper Thread

Born in Lubbock and both sides of the family were / are farmers in Earth. Mesquite always bring memories of driving across the Caprock traveling to Earth to visit. I have driven 50 miles in the middle of the day without seeing another soul before...

I was a LEO in Earth in the late 80's thru early 90's. I've lived in the panhandle for most all my life.

good ol Springlake/Earth..... I have some friends that grew up in Hart. I was in Lubbock til I was 42 years old or so...

Here's how I've been carrying my large GEC's lately

How do you like that GEC sheath? been thinking about picking one up for my big knives.

I really like it. It's the "large" size belt sheath. I like that it is doesn't use a snap, the top fits through the leather band and is very secure

What's the pull like on your 97? I'm such a sucker for big blades, but I don't want another bear trap. Kifer has an autumn bone one that's softy calls my name every time I go there looking for those damned blue camel bones!

I'd like to snag one of those also, but I'm not too confident that they'll appear on their web site. I was thinking they're all spoken for. Hope I'm wrong on that.

It's really reasonable. Probably a 5 or 6 (not sure how to give an accurate estimate). I also have a Northfield version but the pull is lighter than the Tidioute. I think that it feels lighter also because the blade is so long and you get more leverage. I don't have any worries about using it, in fact it's been a great camp knife

From what has been reported, the #97's have a pull that is the opposite of a bear Trap.
Some say the pulls were anemic and that is the reason there are so many still left on the shelves.
If you like a big knife and light pulls, this may be your dream knife. :)

I agree. I think if I were processing an animal I would go for the #23, but if I wanted a general purpose knife the #97 is great.

Yep. I would not trust the 97 for stabbing or a use where there could be pressure on the spine (such as skinning or gutting) unless being very careful with it, given the leverage on the blade and the light spring, but for day to day use it's quite serviceable. I don't think I'd want to have to try to wrestle a 23 open every time I needed to open a package or cut an apple, but for it's "intended use" as a trapper, it's acceptable.

I was just able to snag a Beaver Tail LL. Luckily some places are getting a second drop of them.

And I did, as well... so when the mesquite arrives, I'll be done with the 23's... I like them better than I thought I would. Not exactly an EDC, but a well made "niche" kind of knife.

I ordered a cherrywood LL 23 today, and I haven't even received my woodland micarta variant in the mail yet. What is wrong with me?!

Between the Beaver Tail and the Kifer SFO I have a user and a looker, but I'm still interested in what the Northfields end up looking like.

Got my beaver tail in the mail today (thanks Kiro), as I’ve mentioned before I appreciate the thought that went into putting this knife together...my pioneer less so. We all collect in different ways for different reasons, I like to carry mine around and these are way outside my usual EDC. Anyone else carrying these around in a back pocket or are they all squirreled away in their tubes, to be pulled out and oiled on a scheduled basis?

Back pocket is good. Wish it had a lanyard tube would be more handy that way.
