2020 GEC #33 Conductor Thread

I'd rather see a whittler or clip/coping combo again than clip/pen (which I have basically no interest in). They made so few.

The just cranked out all those pocket carvers so wonder if that impacts the blade choices at all for the #33? Maybe a wharncliffe instead of the pen? I’m not sure what were on these traditionally but I gravitate towards the spear points and sheepsfoot over the clip. Variations on the main would be nice. Looking at your example the long thin frame does kind of ask for a clip blade doesn’t it?

I have a question about half-stops on the upcoming 33.

will the main blade be w/out half-stop while the secondary blade will have a half-stop?

I’m hoping for good snap. It doesn’t have to be a “gator” snap but I enjoy firm snaps especially when locking open.

Fox79 Fox79 none of my conductors have halfstops on either blade. Doubt GEC would re-engineer the 33 to include them. IMO doesn't need them, still has nice snap opening and closing.

Normally I avoid slipjoints with blades that open from opposite ends because blade rub bothers me. Because my father was a railroad conductor the name appeals to me. Tried one, liked it, got a few more. But when the 3 blade models came out was certain there would be blade rub so passed.

Bail gets in the way, but do prefer the coping secondary when the main is a clip.

The only real question is, “did you buy the countertop to match the knives?” Beautiful collection.

I'm with you guys on preferring a coping or other straight edge secondary. I don't see the point of a large, pointy, bellied blade paired with a small, less pointy, bellied blade. I find it more useful for one or the other to be straight.

BDubbs BDubbs thanks! My countertops wish they were that nice! Tis a piece of scrap granite I dug out of the trash (with permission) at a local countertop place while at a storage unit auction next door.

I'm hoping for a 33 as well, but the dealer I normally reserve with opened his reserves on the one day I didn't check for it, and apparently closed the reserves that same day. I missed it. Now, I will have to try to beat the lolly-scramble for them when they drop. My odds are not good, I imagine.

Chief Chief - thanks for clarification on the halfstops. I’m hoping to get one in jigged bone.

hornetguy hornetguy - you may be able to grab one on the exchange here after initial release for a reasonable price. I was able to pickup two perfect example 62’s ( easy pocket & carver) from folks who didn’t want them.

Yea, I got panicky over the 23s but they kept trickling in to the dealers a few at a time and some forum members sold them on the exchange as well once they decide they weren’t for them. The last run of 33s had 20ish different handles with a couple of....bold acrylics (plus dead skunk) so fingers crossed.

It looks like this run of 33's will be in two covers... stag, and an unknown jigged bone. Perhaps they will offer multiple colors of jigged bone, but we won't know that until they start making them... at least as far as I know.

I've purchased newer knives on the exchange after the drop, but that was before the flippers invaded. Now, catching a GEC on the exchange is very difficult, unless you happen to be watching exactly when one is posted.

It won't be "the end of the world as we know it" if I don't get one, but I did want to get at least one of them..... Hope springs eternal....

I hate to disappointment folks, but the 33’s are a result of the pandemic and shutdown this year. It’s a filler run to keep things going while they get ready for the next big run which is the “surprise”.

since the 33’s are a filler I think GEC is using what they have on hand for material. So we may only see the two cover options.

but we can all hope for a surprise acrylic cover or wood option.

A nice acrylic would be nice.

Noooo, there’s going to be a lot of cover options, wicked acrylics and enough for everybody....except the flippers. Screw those guys.

Looks like it’ll be antique autumn. Nice, but a bit unexciting. I hope the jigging is nice and small (peach seed) and not big and rustic like the pony or horse cut. Also hope the “TBD” shield will be as originally shown. That looked elegant on the 33 frame.
