2020 GEC #62 Easy Pocket Congress and Pocket Carver Thread

Aye today I ordered from DLT a stag 62. It will be my first stag and also my first northfield. Its also my engagement knife! I went over the photos meticulously and couldnt find a gnarly popcorn that matched to my taste, but I did find a nicely matched one that im sure will be great. Id rather have well matched than two radically different sides personally.

I got one of the smooth white bone pocket carvers. Mine has a very odd, strong smell. Almost like a zoo. Did anyone else notice an unusual smell?

Wow, that is so COOL! I can't imagine how hard that pattern would be to carve. Very nice. About how much total time did it take you to complete? Thanks for sharing.
Larry
Thank you, most of the afternoon and evening yesterday, then finished up this morning. Sorry I really don't pay attention to the clock when I'm whittling, it's a real stress reliever for me.

People always want to know "how long it took", and my answer is almost always "I have no idea", no matter what I tell them. I don't keep track, and really don't care. I've spent hundreds of hours on some projects, scattered over the course of months.

That pattern is actually not that difficult.

VERY cool... did you dream that up yourself, or did you see one somewhere?
I'm working on a slightly different one myself, in spanish cedar... which has slowed me down considerably.... at least I'm strengthening my hands...
Thank you, I'm sure I saw it on the internet somewhere. I could not tell you where though.

Has anyone experienced blade rub? Mine 62 ez congress came in today and im real happy with it, but already got some blade rub at the tip of the wharnie on the side that shares the well with the pen. Just at the tip, the scratches run the width of the blade but dont appear to catch the edge. I have read a fair amount of this thread but not the whole thing, havent seen much about blade rub.

What do you all say? Send er back or hang onto a unique piece?

I think that will probably be normal since there squeezing so many blades in on a thin knife. Sometimes how you open it can cause blade rub to if your not careful . Always try to pull straight up . Just my opinion and I’m sure someone with more knowledge then me will chime in :)
I say keep it though if you like everything else about it and enjoy it

No, no blade-rub on any of the three I own, one of which is very much the user. Of course, being single-spring blade rub is always a possibility, but I've found the run to be very high QC so if you're not happy with it I'd suggest returning it immediately and asking for a replacement.

My middle grandson got interested in carving when I showed him pictures from this thread, thanks for the great work guys . Carving for a 10 year old is hard but he tries, not sure what year he will be done :). I'm retired now, it's nice having free time so I'm back doing old hobbies I haven't done in many years. My grandson helped make a leather pocket carver holder for a stand that's not done yet but I might convince him to punch a hole and hang it. Here's a couple pictures of the knives, holder and pocket slips I made.
