2020 GEC #62 Easy Pocket Congress and Pocket Carver Thread

Oh my, I was going to pass on the 62s however this is prefect for me. I use straight edge and warncliff blades almost exclusively to carve. One to rough out one end for detail work. I hope the blades are nice and thin. It will be excellent for pumpkin carving. :D

Depends on your whittling technique. I almost only use straight edges. On this 62, if i can get a one, i will sharpen the main toothy at 10 degrees per side for pull cuts, one secondary sharpened at 10 dps for soft wood, the other at 12.5 dps for hard wood and very concave cuts , on both secondaries i will set a fine edge for push cuts. No redundancy. Sometimes the way a blade is sharpened is more important than its shape.

Dan.
Thanks for the perspective. You make a good point, and it's funny but now that I think about it, I do a lot of craft projects using x-acto and scalpel blades which are all straight edged.
Not so fast. There is a 2 blade 62 unicorn ivory calling your name.
Indeed. Mr. 13 and Mrs. 25 are expecting a new arrival very soon. Long and narrow like Dad, but with his mother's covers. :D

A white acrylic with a subtle crosshatch grain.

I appreciate your putting this pic up... I had never seen unicorn before. I assumed it would be plain, smooth offwhite acrylic. Seeing the "matrix" in it really pleases me. I'll bet this will be a very elegant knife.

I definitely want one of those smooth white bone. Still bummed about missing the 86s so I’m aiming for one of these for sure.

Nothing. :D
I only tried whittling two or three times, but I liked using something with a belly as well as a straight edge. And on a general carey knife I want a pen blade for "skinning" my mandarines.
:D:D:D

You're welcome. It really is neat looking stuff, but hard to photograph. It's the closest to ivory I've seen in any artificial material. The #13 forum knife is ivory micarta, which is nice too, but doesn't have that grain.

Other than Collector Knives who will do reserves?
Good question. Mike is the only one I know of.

On the topic of whittler blade styles, GEC made a three blade 62 back in 2011 called the Courthouse whittler. Wharnie main, coping and spear as the secondaries. That would definitely put it on the "must have" list, if they do the same blade assortment this time. Crossing fingers and toes....

Yes, I really like the look of the 62 Courthouse, also a 'must have', but I assume an 'impossible to get' in the UK. The pocket carver looks interesting, three similar blades, but the style of blade often seen on specialist single, fixed blade carving knives. Less interested in the Easy Pocket Congress as just two blades, my preferred whittler style is large clip on two springs, pen and coping. I have the Boker Congress Carver which has four blades, all on single springs although with decent snaps. I've never used the spay blade and would have preferred a different pattern. I also think the tip of the spey sits a bit high when closed.

you can easily remedy the high spey blade... just file down the kick on the blade... just a tiny bit at a time, until the blade sits down where you want it. I have used a Dremel tool with a sanding drum on it to take it down. A hand file will usually work, depending on the heat treating of the blade, but the Dremel works on any of them. I just did this on my Forum knife, to get the blade down in the handles a little further. Worked great.

Maroon Micarta would be the smartest choice and the best looker. I like the black linen micarta too. The others are acquired taste and slower sellers. Blue Camel bone is so awesome on my #93. I got burned with my #29 Snakewood pre-order last year. I'll never trust GEC to fill a snakewood run again. I am only buying three #62s. Looks like the ironwoods are going up first. I have a banana pre-order. Prices and availability , we will see how it rolls. I just hope I don't have to come up with any Blade Forum knife money until February. I have another club knife to pre-pay for. The banana camel bone ,ironwood , snake wood , and blue camel bone will be the most wanted. (oooops , I just spotted the three blade cocobolo) That is the knife for me. Looks like the banana camel bone , cocobolo #62 pocket carver , and the #62 pocket carver natural white bone are for me. I hope this don't kill me with the Blade Forum pre-order coming up this quarter. I am going to aquire some great knives in 2020.

Definitely not into the banana bone just because of the shield. Just not my scene to carry a knife with a banana on it. If it had no shield then that would be something I would get first!

I was really excited to see the 62, until I saw that the CHW wasn't on the list. Still hoping. Will sit this one out otherwise

Well that turned out splendidly! I love the shield choice and that dark red hue.

For my needs and the majority of uses I will have for a pocket knife the 62 Tidioute Jigged bone will be fine. I prefer Tidioute models anyway.

I think I would agree with you. That bone looks pretty sweet and that new Tidioute shield looks fantastic, it might end up being my favorite of the run depending on how the Stag turns out. I am not a whittler so the Pocket Carver doesn't hold much appeal to me despite its fine cover choices. Though if it comes with a split back, I might scoop one up out of curiosity.
